Colliding Network EP
Cat: UTTU 114. Rel: 20 Apr 22
  1. System Booting (7:14)
  2. Bits & Bytes (6:41)
  3. Colliding Network (8:20)
  4. Data Crash (6:20)
Review: Binary Operator on unknown to the Unknown is always going to get people excited. His debut for the label does not disappoint either: it opens with the lush synth smears and rugged bass of 'System Booting' before cutting a little morellos on 'Bits & Bytes' which is all bleeps and squeals. ON the flipside is maybe the best track of the whole EP for us - 'Colliding Network' is a spacious and roomy electro track that is deeply atmospheric and just as cinematic. The synths are eerie and the bass characterful. Last of all is 'Data Crash' which is a squelchy and sleazy bit of sludgy electro.

Review: Since debuting as Dawl nine years ago, Tone Dropout co-founder Darren Woollard has become one of the most trusted producers of revivalist '90s fare, with a trademark sound that mixes and matches elements from various vintage styles of techno and electro. That attractive, mind-altering personal sound is much in evidence on this EP for Unknown To The Unknown, which wholeheartedly pays tribute to the turn-of-the-'90s Yorkshire bleep & bass sound. Those versed in the style's history will notice a few knowing winks to various underground classics - the title track sounds like an unreleased track from Richard H Kirk and Rob Gordon's short-lived XON project, for example - while the important ingredients (deep sub bass, alien bleeps, unfussy house-tempo techno drums and crunchy hardcore breaks) are all present and correct. A delicious blast from the past from a genuine student of the style.

Review: Danny Wolfers is undeniably one of the most prolific and endlessly creative artist sin electronic music. Keeping up with his numerous different aliases alone is a challenge. For this one on Unknown to the Unknown he becomes Dickie Smabers and heads off into a dramatic world of lo-fi, low slung and dusty house beats . Plenty of pixelated melodies light up the airwaves while more electro tinged rhythms and robotic jackbeats also help move things along in typically dynamic fashion. As always, this is another vital dispatch from The Hague.

Feeding The Fad
Cat: UTTU 074. Rel: 27 Jun 17
  1. Feeding The Fad (4:51)
  2. Hip To The Hype (4:38)
  3. Probably Too Commercial (7:13)
Review: Label-hopping Dutchman DJ Overdose can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. Happily, he's in fine form on this first solo Unknown to the Unknown appearance since 2015's fantastic Housejam Freaker. Wisely, he's decided to steer clear of well-worn retro-futurist cliches (jungle breaks, hardcore revivalism and so on), instead delivering a trio of raw cuts that blend elements of electro, 1990 style European techno and blistering acid house. Flipside "Probably Too Commercial", a rough-and-ready dose of distorted, high octane electro smothered in alien electronics, is probably the pick of the bunch, though sweaty, stab-tastic opener "Feeding The Fad" - all razor-sharp electronic riffs, wayward drum machine beats and old school vocal samples - also impresses.

  3. Wait For It (8:01)
  4. Ethereum (feat Sichuan) (6:29)
  5. ISS Liners (6:52)
Review: Ilyes Sedjal Follows up some great releases on Tombola and The Void Project with a smashing new EP for UTTU packed full of 'deep progressive house sounds'. Four originals and a remix are featured on the Second Life EP: there's the rolling, broken beats of the title track, followed by a mindblowing rework courtesy of Yosh who takes it into early '90s breakbeat hardcore territory. Over on the flip, you have the trance infused euphoria of 'Wait For It' that will have you reaching for the lasers, while the chunky techno groove of closing cut 'ISS Liners' goes out all guns blazing.

Review: Purrrfect flavours right here as Dutch badman Tommy The Cat makes his debut on Unknown To The Unknown with four slabs of pristine modern day jungle. 'Flying Papers' gets us off to a flying start with its syrupy subs and dreamy feels before 'At The Yard' goes full Goodlooking 93 style but with some devilish twists on the breaks. Flip for more 160-ish goodness as 'In Your Eyes' hits with hurricane pads and emotions and 'We Will Stay Together In The Dark' closes the EP with some foundational Headz flavours. Pure breaks science. Great meowsic.
