Review: London's Brood Ma is affiliated to Quantum Natives, but the guy very much has his own sound and outlook on electronic music. In fact, one could say that this new album on Tri Angle is in a category of its own, and that each track stands alone in terms of genre and vibe. There is everything from far-out percussion thrashing, though to broken bass demolition, and a whole lot of noise in the mix. By that, we mean that each track on here is capable of breaking down at any moment, and unleashing a furious swarm of drones and glitches, transporting the listener from head-nodding, to brain-stirring. It is highly recommended, and is surely the bass pick of the week form us. KILLER.

Review: Music from the young Joshua Leary has been sporadic since he emerged on a wave of YouTube hype at the tail end of 2011, with only the Kings and Them mixtape and this year's one-sided Duga-3release on Record Store Day, but given he received a production credit on Kanye West's Yeezus album last year his relative silence can be forgiven. As such the Waterfall EP represents perhaps Leary's first proper release, and it shows that he has come a long way since the early days of his career. Containing four tracks that bridge the gap between jungle, hip hop and ambient music, Waterfall is both delicate and savage in equal measure, especially on the closing title track, where plaintive piano and semi-automatic snares collide to thrilling effect.

  1. Magister Nunns

  3. Mildew Swoosh
  4. CE Visions
Review: New Zealand artist FIS is breaking through at present with a sizable raft of releases notched up for some highly regarded labels. Amongst them are Exit, Haunted Audio and Void Coms, but now the noise-and-beats orientated producer is on Tri Angle with a whole lot of curious soundscaping to impart. "Magister Nuns" goes straight into the realms of beatless sound design of a particularly teeth-grinding nature, unsettling in extreme. "DMT Usher" does pivot around a beat of some description, but still the focus is on spatial mixing and panning of found sounds with just tiny whispers of melody to be found anywhere. "Mildew Swoosh" is a dense, organic beast that lets more prominent synth work join in the messy fun, while "CE Visions" blurs back into a glorious mulch of abstract rhythmic sway.

Review: We can't quite put a finger on Hanz's background, persona, or music, but that's exactly what we like about the dude. In the last five or so years, the producer has been putting our music via his own self-named indie, and the sounds have come in a variety of shapes and sizes, never sticking too closely to one mood or style. He's here this week courtesy of the excellent Tri Angle imprint - recent hosts to the sublime Roly Porter LP - and this guy is no mood to fool around, getting straight to the point with the stuttering, distorted beat shuffles of "The History Of", followed beautifully by the lo-fi dub jam that is "Dues". Amongst the myriad of sick tunes on here, we're particularly into the dread march of "War Fiction", "Gum's" tropical stance, and the post-everything sound of "Sink". Genre breaking at its finest.

Review: Since debuting with the sublime With U last summer, Holy Other has become one of the Tri Angle roster's most compelling figures, and that rarest of things - an anonymous producer that is more than the sum of the hype surrounding them who is able to imbue their music with genuine personality. Though his sound is initially typical of the Aaliyah sampling Burial wannabes that are currently plaguing the internet, Holy Other manages to add extra layer of gothic drama to proceedings. Though the beats are there, they limp rather than skip (such as on opener "(W)here"), R&B tropes are inverted to create a ghostly frame draped over a skeletal structure ("Inpouring"). R&B isn't the only influence however; "Past Tension" is chopped and screwed 80s pop, while the heart wrenching chords and rumbling strings of "In Difference" could easily have come from Mogwai's Rock Action.

Review: Roly Porter's recent output finally earned him a place in the big league; his second LP, Third Law, comes through courtesy of New York's excellent Tri Angle label, and the mighty "4101" - released as a single back in Novemeber, paves the way for an album full of suspense and surrealism. This is no job for anyone looking for peace or meditation, but rather one for the more open-minded. "Mass", for instance, unleashes boulders of bass and noise over glitchy half-beats, whereas the tunes like "High Places" sound like the inside of an interstellar cruiser, and the sublime "In System" reminds us of Apex Twin's strand of ambient...a cold, pensive bundle of euphoric energy. Recommended.

Review: After Order Of Noise presented Vessel as a fearsome force within and without the Young Echo collective, Seb Gainsborough brings his foremost alias back for another bout of long-playing exploration, and this time he's crafted a wholly different sound from homemade instruments. The drums rattle and thud with a tacit live-ness, while the synths wail, groan and strain their way through grand and opulent sound scapes to chill the spine and un-nerve the soul. It's a masterfully well-sculpted record with moments of light bleeding into bottomless pits of murk, and it further establishes Vessel as a powerful force in forward-thrusting electronic music.
