Jody & John (2:54)
Review: Now this is what you call a hot damn funk record right here. The legendary Nathan Bartell released this absolute scorcher "Top Going Up Going Down" back in 1975 and is what you could call a good and proper digger's delight. You can trust German powerhouse Tramp (run by Tobias Kirmayer) to bring the revival as always, as these guys specialize in rare soul and funk reissues. Second offering "Jody & John" undeniably takes it cues from the godfather himself James Brown and his orchestra but wow: this one absolutely explosive tribute if we do say so ourselves. Hailing from Ashburn, Georgia, Bartell started out with Eddie & the Cascades in the '60s. In 1991 Bartell was hospitalised with a lung ailment and while recovering became born again and vowed never again to sing R&B music. He instead formed a Gospel group called Nathan Bartell & Reality and still performs in Southern Georgia.

Sally (3:28)
Bubble & Squeak (3:27)
Review: Ring Musik is one of Germany's finest library record labels and it is that which has been pillaged for this super new 7" on Tramp Records. The double a-side has never been re-issued since the first time it came out in 1976 and comes here with B-side bomb 'Bubble and Squeak,' a real rare groove classic with fluid bass playing and rolling rhythms that are softened with tender chord work and airy flute. A-side 'Sally' is a brilliantly intriguing track that leads you to a place of mystery on meandering bass, wandering keys and 60s horns. Both of these are lush.

Black Water Gold
Review: This is the second 7" from Barbados group The Blue Rhythm Combo to be reissued in the past couple of weeks. The first was of course the voluptuous triple 45 wax job from UK label Jazzman, and now we see this tasty little 45 from Germany's finest funk label Tramp Records. This double A Sider has possibly the best tracks from the band in ''Take The Funky Feeling'' flipped by a version of Louis Villery's penned ultimate funk classic "Black Water Gold". For admirers of the tropical side of funk related gems this is nothing short of essential.

Mood For Love (feat BG) (2:32)
Let Me Down Easy (feat BG) (3:05)
Review: Straight up steamy, sweaty shake-down soul that - until now - has been rare as hen's teeth. Spotted passing hands for upwards of L500 in the past, we have two storming sides for the price of one: "Mood For Love" is a stomp happy northern soul classic loaded with all the right ingredients; big harmonies, bigger horns and a beat that won't quit. "Let Me Down Easy" didn't achieve anthem status in the same way and has since been the driver for the original pressing's high price. Stick the needle on and you'll know why; powerful Rhodes, life-affirming horns and a gutsy vocal that burns from the inside in the best possible way.

Review: The Boogoos are a new combo which combines the heavy rhythm section of heroes like James Brown with the unbelievable power of the horn section of Fela Kuti. Their unique styles is an incredible melting pot of different kinds of music, with influences from the likes of Hugh Masekela, Art Ensemble Of Chicago and even some funkier bands. DJs will love "Bubbles", especially the b-side, which starts with a monster drum and percussion, just perfect for the dancefloor! If you dig Antibalas or the Timmion crew out of Finland, you will be pleased with this release on Tramp. The Boogoos includes members of the former Poets Of Rhythm, current members of The Hi-Fly Orchestra and The Express Brass Band, all of which have had several releases in the field of funk, Latin, Brazilian and traditional New Orleans jazz.

Don't Go Away
The Fresh One
Review: Tramp Records is keen on continuing its busy release schedule, never compromising quality, danceability, collectibility or personality in its sheer volume of releases.

2008 starts with 'Don't Go Away', the exciting debut of Lucky Brown & The Funk Revolution, a brand-new unit formed by producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, Joel Ricci. Ricci and his far-reaching collective have been hard at work rocking shows and developing their signature 'west-sound' style for over seven years. Ricci hand-picked the cream of the players, bankrolled a wild, week-long road trip, then crammed the seven piece Funk Revolution into his tiny cabin in Northwest Washington, affectionately dubbed 'Chez Jojo.' The rhythm section in the living room, horn section in the kitchen, and Ricci in the middle doing his best to capture all the drippings of natural energy and soul on an old tape machine situated on a clean spot on the kitchen counter.

'Don't Go Away' features Ricci on lead vocals and the horn section as background singers. This cut has all you need: powerful vocals, a monstrous horn line reminiscent of the JB's 'The Grunt', and two fly flute/drum breaks for the beatdiggers.

'The Fresh One' is an instrumental track with a rude sound to it, The Funk Revolution lay down a killer groove and after Tommy D has his way with his spooky saxophone, Lucky manhandles the flute once again, then makes way for drummer Olli Klomp to take it on home. 'The Fresh One' is simply a monster b-side, 2 and a half minutes of wild and rough deep funk madness.

Although the number of bands that are playing so-called deep-funk steadily increases, few can match the chemistry, urgency and true funk grit as these brethren. Lucky Brown & The Funk Revolution get the job done by simply doing what they do, hungry to present themselves and their thing to the world. The pan-Atlantic partnership and friendship forged between Joel Ricci and Tobias Kirmayer has given birth to this incredible double-sider. A fitting debut for a real funk revolution and sure to be a sought after collector's item, the first in a parade of dance floor power singles.

Trading Bullets (3:58)
Review: Formed over two decades ago in a small town in Northern Finland, Chicken Grass is one of the most storied - if not particularly well-known - Finnish funk bands. Yet despite this history, they've never previously appeared on wax, making this must-check 45 a vinyl debut almost 25 years in the making. A-side 'Snakebites' is simply superb: a timeless slab of rhythm and blues style soul featuring authentically fuzzy production, punchy horns, mazy Hammond B3 solos and a killer lead vocal from YouTube sensation Princess Shaw. Flipside 'Trading Bullets', meanwhile, is a deeper chunk of blue-eyed business that adds spacey jazz-funk synths to the band's usual vintage soul sound.

Review: Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest (in their own words!) but funkiest labels who release new bands, but also re-issue quality rare funk, soul and jazz too. This time around they present us with City News for some truly authentic porn-funk soul vibes that you would honestly be convinced were from the early seventies in the vein of Hot Chocolate or Ramp like on the tremendous A side "Bustin' Up". On the flip we've got "Chan The Man" a kung-fu fightin' hoe down aboard the soul train express.

I'm In Your Corner (feat Roy Hytower) (2:49)
Tip Jar (feat Roy Hytower) (4:20)
Review: Singer, songwriter, actor, legend: Roy Hytower's Doktu Rhute Muuzic project pays homage to his roots (literally - his father was a herb doctor) his beliefs and his pure skills. A story teller with a strong, smoky bluesy twang and wide range over two sides he paints a big picture; "I'm In Your Corner" has a great Stax style sleazy funk with its tight looseness and brilliantly timed horn section. "Tip Jar", meanwhile, is a much slower jam that rolls with a lolloping groove and a destitute tale that sucks you in with the similar techniques employed by the one and only Mr Brown. Yeah it's that good.

I Feel Good
Review: Unless you're really subverting it and doing something pretty far out, James Brown covers are largely best avoided. Duffy and Johnny's rendition is a refreshing exception; the orchestra carry serious weight (and keep it as tight as Brown as insist himself) and Johnny's delivery is emphatic enough to rise myriad groin thrusts. Watch out for the incredible organ solo, followed by a double kickdrum crescendo and insane spiralling horn riffs. Feel good? Damn straight!

Let Me Prove My Love
Review: Introduced to us on Tramp's recent Movements 6 collection, Dynamic Duke Royal's long-lost 40 year old sounds cover a great breadth. "I Wanna Know" is super-charged with rock n' roll energy as it thunders with energy, breaks into a great horn-heaved chorus and crisp Hank-style guitar twangs. "Let Me Prove My Love" plays the instant soothing foil. A bluesy ballad with woozy horns, far-away piano tinkles and a Duke's honeyed vocals, it's an instant heart-stopper.

The Bull Is Coming (feat The Devil's Personal Band)
Review: One of funk's longest standing representatives, Fields continues to contribute to myriad genres, including contemporary acts like Kraak & Smaak. For this reissue, however, Tramp take us back to 1979 with a snapshot from his debut album Let's Talk It Over. Tight swings and frenetic horn work give both sides a real JBs thrust while The Devil's Personal Band are allowed to let loose on their own on "The Bull Is Coming". Another successful reboot of a once rare-as-hens-teeth 7", Tramp have well and truly spoilt us.

St James Infirmary
Review: Prior to this highly anticipated reissue, crazy amounts of paper have been passed over for this once-rare funk gem. It's not hard to hear why... Released in 1970, "I'll Leave You" is a big band swinger that built on the blues funk foundations Redding dug the year with "Too Hard To Handle". File under instant feel good floor stomper. Flip for "St James Infirmary". Rich, bluesy and delivered with spacious production and crisp delivery... Written 40 years before this recording, sounding good 44 years later - this really is a timeless record.

The Fugitives/Archie - "Funky You" (2:18)
The Fugitives/Scottie - "Love Come Down" (3:30)
Review: When it comes to reissuing vintage soul and funk, Germany's Tramp label is second to none. For them, a new week means a new beauty to reissue, and this particular week in October is no different; in fact, this magnetic little 7" is fabulous in every way. First up is 1971's "Funky You" by The Fugitives and Archie, a group who only released a handful of EPs under that moniker, but whose most famous tune is here for you to own, and cause serious levels of angst among the collectors (as you can imagine, the original is rather hard to find). On the flip, the same outfit team up with Scottie for a more classic, sensual love ballad called "Love Come Down", the sort of song which makes your head turn and spin to ask the DJ: "mate, what's that!?".

Sweet Honey Bee
Review: The Hi-Fly Orchestra means all-acoustic jazz with a totally infectious and heavy dance groove that always gets the crowd on the floor. The group has an ear for the great sound of 60s jazz, Latin and samba, returning jazz to its grooviest roots. The tunes are recorded live on 8-track tape recorder, delivering an authentic and original sound. The heavy and rough rhythms are played by drums, double-bass, congas and piano, supporting the wonderful horn-lines by sax and trombone. Both tunes on this release are original compositions: 'Mo Slow' is a jazzy, hard-rolling Boogaloo/Soul-Jazz tune which is filled with dancefloor energy that kicks in from the very first note. Trombone and piano are featured and do a fantastic bit of funky jazz-soloing. 'Sweet Honey Bee' is a mellow soul-jazz instrumental with nice flute and smooth solo-work by trombone and piano.

Review: What a repress. James & The Incredible Showmen may have made an impression on the US funk floors as a live act but as recording artists they only pressed one record. This one. A fitting homage to the big man himself, it's a bright, tight jam with all the drum rolls, bass walks, heaving horns and wukka-wukka strums. Once a digger's delight, it can now relive a little more of the glory it deserves.

Josephine Jones - "Candy Man" (2:51)
Raw Soul - "Just Walk Funky" (2:38)
Review: TRAMP Records' latest must-have "45" is an incendiary double-header of killer cuts. On the A-side you'll find "Candy Man", the suitably obscure sole single from Josephine Jones. It's a lolloping, lo-fi soul affair, with Jones' distinctive vocals rising above the kind of head-nodding breaks, heavy bass and clipped guitar riffs that will get hip-hop DJs hot under the collar. Turn to the flip for another chance to savour Raw Soul's "Just Walk Funky", a track recorded in their home town of Norfolk, Virginia in the early 1970s that went unissued until Put released it in 2009. It remains a tidy chunk of off-kilter instrumental funk rich in intricate guitar licks, booming bass and fizzing drums.
