Review: Themes From Great Cities' latest chunk of inspired, hard-to-define goodness comes from Mekine U Teksi, a fresh outfit formed by Murat Goktas and Irfan Derin. Dedicated to legendary, currently closed Dusseldorf venue Salon Des Amateurs, the mini-album - the duo's debut release - is shot through not only with the arpeggio-driven pulse of vintage '80s new wave, but also the chugging attitude of psychedelic nu-disco and the exotic, intoxicating melodies of traditional Arabic music. Of course, there are other influences that make their presence felt throughout - krautrock, dark Italo-disco, punk funk and dub disco - but these merely serve to enhance the duo's core sound, which is rarely less than enthralling.

  1. Ich Verliebe Mich Nie (4:01)
  2. Pfleg' Mich (5:34)
Review: Neuzeliche Bodenblage is a new project from sometime Oracles members Joshua Gottmanns and Niklas Wandt, the latter fresh from a triumphant collaborative LP alongside Wolf Muller man Jan Schulte. Both tracks doff a cap to the new wave era, offering authentically early '80s sounding chunks of coldwave pop built around throbbing synthesizer arpeggio lines, ice-cold electronic melodies and just about the right amount of late night, eyeliner-clad sleaze. Our pick of the pair is A-side "Ich Verliebe Mich Nie", where half-whispered vocals rise above a throbbing backing track, though there's something adorable about the chugging, reggae-influenced cheeriness of oddball B-side "Pfleg' Mich".

Mogul 4 (12")
Cat: TFGC 015. Rel: 21 Aug 18
  1. Stabil Elite - "Snack Jam" (5:27)
  2. Phaser Boys - "Tennis Camp" (4:45)
  3. Wolf Muller - "Der Vogel Aus Der Unterwelt" (7:37)
  4. Aiwo Posse - "Your Love" (6:25)
Review: Some nine years after Themes From Great Cities launched with the compilation style Mogul EP, the lauded Dusseldorf label delivers a fourth volume in the series. Sparkling, spacey nu-disco chords, jammed-out piano riffs, congas, acid lines and stabbing synth solos get together for an orgasmic naked party on Stabil Elite's fantastic EP opener "Snack Jam", before Phaser Boys deliver their own fusion of bouncy Chicago acid bass, boisterous pianos and tropical percussion on the unusual (but undeniably ace) "Tennis Camp". Label regular Jan Schulte dons the Wolf Muller guise again on the trademark off-kilter percussive hypnotism of "Der Vogel Aus Der Unterwelt", while Aiwo Posse round things off with the muscular, late night acid house anthem "Your Love".
