Review: The Advent made for a perfect addition to the formidable Thema catalogue, and now he's back with the second volume of his "Dorian Blue" series. There are plentiful loops to get creative with, but the fully-formed tracks have their own cyclical qualities to inspire technically-minded DJs. "Structures" is an urgent, tightly wound piledriver, while "Interactive Loop" and "Digitize" cuts both take a sprightly, Motor City-styled approach to electro. With loops derived from these classy tracks and more besides, there's a lot to get the creative juices flowing as well as bodies popping.

In Time (The Brooklyn edit) (6:33)
Rhythm (Is Life edit) (6:35)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Cisco Ferreira continues to fly the flag for rugged hardware powered techno with personality, well over 20 years since he first emerged. The Advent is rightly hailed as a mark of assured quality for good reason, and Thema make a smart move in signing up this fresh grip of tracks from the veteran producer. "Kombination 100" is a lurid, slightly unhinged acid workout from the outer limits, while "Dorian Blue" sets a more moody, aquatic tone with a dash of electro thrown in for good measure. "In Time" brings things up in tempo and attitude, sporting some surging 909 drums guaranteed to get bodies striding with purpose, and then "Rhythm" spins out into trippy electro territory for the heads-down travelers to get spiritually expanded to.

BKorizon
Review: Well respected brothers-about-town Ark and Pit make a long-overdue return to collabo city and the result is a five-strong collection of beautiful leftfield house grooves. "Clark Kent" is the big league pick; an ESG-style post-disco bassline stutters and slurs in the mix with so much funk you feel you need to clean your decks after playing it. Another peak is the pummelling techno groove and soft jazzy chord combo of "They Ruff". Insistent yet warm, it's not far off a Carl Craig production. Need a lie down? Do so to the wonky, sludgy downtempo dreaminess of "BKorizon".

Review: REPRESS! Sometimes there is a sound that lifts you so high you can't possibly come down. It's the kind of sound that many strive for, but few can ever reach. UK mainstay Aubrey has been hitting this pinnacle for years through his releases on renowned imprints such as Metroplex, Ostgut Ton, and Skudge, as well as his very own Solid Groove Records. "The Reflection" EP comes as no exception. As only a DJ and Producer of his stature can do, Aubrey goes above and beyond to take the listener through a spectrum of moods that culminate in a rounded and complex experience. From the uplifting, fast paced pads in "Peligro 45" to the disorienting rhythmic voodoo of "Roger Doger" and peak energy drive of "Train To The Fire" there is a sense of direction and otherworldly ambiance that will take any dance floor to the place it needs to be.

Review: REPRESS! Ann Arbor's D'Marc Cantu has really made a name for himself in the last few years releasing some soulful analogue house and techno workouts that could pass for early '90s originals on labels such as Creme Organization, Nation and M>O>S>. That Love You Feel is Cantu's latest offering and offers us more of his rusty, emotive and sublime takes on purist U.S. sounds. The title track sounds rather reminiscent of 808 State's classic "Pacific State" while the dark tunnelling techno vibe of "Lilk" and the peak time energy of the early Plus 8 Records sounding "1tweleve3one " provides a diverse range of moods and grooves. Final track "Fright Night" though, featuring Rodger Devine, is a warped and dirty epic and probably the real highlight on here.. but there's so much to choose from. Tip!

Minimalism (Mike Huckaby remix)
Minimalism (Silent Servant remix)
Minimalism (DVS1 remix)
Minimalism (original (A2) 1995 version)
Review: This year has seen the music making enigma otherwise known as Terrence Dixon return to the production game with admirable gusto; in addition to his stunning From The Far Future 2 album on Tresor we've seen original and reissued EPs on Knotweed Records, Delsin, Rush Hour, Harbour City Sorrow and Chronicle. Here we see three heavyweights tackle Dixon's 1995 cut "Minimalism" for Thema; Mike Huckaby's version ploughs a bleak, linear terrain reminiscent of Jeff Mills, while Silent Servant is back at his wall rattling best on his version. By contrast DVS1's effort is soaked in colour, making full use of the synths used on the towering original version that nestles happily alongside it on the B-Side.

Aerial (4:27)
Review: DJ Slip goes by the name of Troy Geary and the dude has been releasing techno since the mid '90s on imprints such as DJ Hyperactive's Missile, among many others. Brooklyn's Thema has been his home in recent years, this time returning to the label with two new bruisers and a remix, to boot! "Highlander" is a wonky piece of drum machine magic with a fuzzy low-end and trembling cowbells, whereas "Aerial" is on the straighter side thanks to a steady kick drum and plenty of sonic hypnotics. The surprise remix of the latter comes from Berliner Answer Code Request (MDR, Ostgut Ton) who adds in his familiar for of jittery percussion, coated in a thick layer of quasi-breaks for that distinctive sound.

NEXT
Review: The sheer volume of New York maverick DJ Spider's back catalogue is as intimidating as the picture of the man himself holding a machete in the studio, but it's a rich and unpredictable treasure trove of leftfield techno. He makes an appearance on Thema with a record typically diverse in its make up. The opening track "Throwing Hairs" is a masterful trip through atmospheric, organic soundscapes with submerged ecosystems of sound rippling around deathly simple kick n hi hat pattern. His own rework of "Extropy" features similar smudged textures underneath, but the sweet nature of the chords makes for a killer foil to the murk. "The Final Revolution" gets into a tougher frame of mind, placing plenty of emphasis on the low end and letting fly with some seriously dishevelled percussion. "Distress Signal" is oppressive in its sense of desolation, all icy winds blowing into a kick propelled nothingness.

Jami Jam Dubb'd
Review: Veteran maverick Elbee Bad pops up in ever-unpredictable places, but somehow he sounds just right on Thema. His fearless, deeply rooted take on house music defies imitation, and so it goes across this full-fat EP. "Request Monster" is a lazy groove embellished with strings protesting the culture of requests in the club, while "A Lot Of Jazz As A Child" doffs its cap to Sun Ra in a subtle way that manages to be both mechanical and free-flowing. "If EYE Was From The D" is a more overtly electronic production that sits somewhere in between acid, techno and deep house. "Crossing Dimensions" is an uplifting workout with a sweet vocal turn from an unknown source, and then "Jami Jam Dubb'd" finishes the record off with a primal set of ingredients working round a stout kick.

Review: Laurine Frost steps outside of his own Not So Secret Party and teams up with the legendary Troy Geary aka DJ Slip - member of the infamous Missile outfit alongside DJ Hyperactive - with a split release for the lovely Them imprint. Frost himself comes through with "Your House", a moody 808-driven house number featuring Amiri Baraka on the vocals, while Slip's "X7" is a pseudo-electro monster complete with growling low-ends and steely-eyed percussion highs...there's a dab of acid in there for you, too...

Re-Televised (Lucy remix)
Re-Televised (Donor/Truss vinyl edit remix)
Re-Televised (original 1998 version)
Review: Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, the Missile imprint was responsible for releasing a slew of blistering techno cuts from production heavy weights DJ Hyperactive, Inigo Kennedy, Frankie Bones and DJ Slip. In 1998 the label released Heiko Laux's Re-Televised EP, which 15 years later (can you believe it) has earned itself a repressing on New York imprint Thema. It has commissioned two 2013 remixes in Donor and Truss, the labels New York connection and Stroboscopic Artefacts boss man Lucy. Haux's original may lack the weight of their modern day reworks, but its stone-crunch kicks certainly don't lack punch. Donor & Truss share the B-Side with Haux's exemplar, creating a quintessential '90s infinity loop, intermittently injecting a rough samples from "Re-Televised". Lucy's remix remains loopy also, only adding dour and industrial atmospherics, unsettling children's voices and Strobo's trademark low end.

Mr G - "Little Grainy One" (7:27)
Raudive - "Carved" (5:03)
Cesare vs Disorder - "All Night" (6:16)
Suburb - "Odyssey" (7:16)
Review: America's Thema label loudly return with the third chapter of the Strength In Numbers series, an outlet reserved strictly for the finest and sleekest in dancefloor delights. There's plenty of talent and quality within, presented by a handsomely hand-picked selection of house scientists, namely Raudive, Cesare vs Disorder and Suburb, but it's the UK's Mr.G who takes the limelight on this one. His singular style - warm, analogue tech-house infested with the sound of valve compressors - is both utterly effective on the floor and also a pleasure to listen to while swinging to a fro wherever you may find yourself.

What Have We Become
Paranoid
Sunrise
Sunrise (Underwater dub)
Review: Regular partners in crime Oskar Offermann and Edward join forces once more for this stellar selection of otherworldly house cuts on Thema, having previously surfaced on labels such as Offermann's own White imprint. "What Have We Become" is a melancholic affair powered by softly spoken analogue synths and yet still striding forwards with purpose, compared to the easy tone and open-top chords of "Paranoid". Opting for a different approach once again, "Sunrise" gets into a more fevered kind of deep house action heavy on the drums and made all the stronger by a subtle male vocal murmur. The "Underwater Dub" of "Sunrise" heads into a rougher terrain comprised of broken, overdriven beats and just snatches of the original melody.

Computer Madness (Function vs Jerome Sydenham remix)
Computer Madness (Function remix)
Computer Madness (original 1989 version)
Review: Still recognised as one of the evergreen classics from Chicago and inarguably influential, "Computer Madness" gets another round of treatment at the hands of modern technicians for the Thema stable. First up Function and Jerome Sydenham meld their styles into a simmering techno melting pot that holds back on the jagged angles and instead opts for a linear workout, with just that quintessential bleep synth line lurking in the murk. Function goes it alone on the flip with a more Detroit flavoured workout defined by yearning strings and scattershot drum machine splays, and in case you don't have a copy the original gets tacked on the B2 for good measure.

Lost In Brooklyn (original)
Lost In Brooklyn (Norm Talley remix)
Review: It's been six years since Smallville regular Christopher Rau made his 12" debut. Since then, he's built a solid reputation thanks to releases on Hypercolour, Aim, Mule Musiq and Thema. Here he returns to the latter label with "Lost in Brooklyn", a loopy and chunk of hypnotic deep house with definite nods to Twilo-era Tenaglia and crunchy European tech-house. Rau makes great use of undulating riffs, which work perfectly with the compressed bassline and cymbal-heavy groove. Norm Talley switches focus a little on his rework, taking influence from classic Detroit productions on his deep and driving techno take.

Clockwerks (7:26)
Forgotten Folklore (5:49)
Mist (2:22)
The Village (6:23)
Tu (4:56)
Review: REPRESS! Myles Serge could only be described as a maverick, a mysterious producer who happens to make some of the best house and techno around. This latest five-piece on the excellent Thema label is Serge through and through, and from "Clockworks" to "Tu", we're dropped in a warm and meditative zone that doesn't quite seem to make its mind up about which category it belongs to between house and techno. "Forgotten Folklore" reminds us of Terrence Dixon's output under his Population One alias - loose beats and melodies suspended in mid-air - and "Mist" is a minimal-tribal cut for added suspense. "The Village" calls to the dance floor thanks to its subtle waves of acid, and is perhaps the stand-out moment in this perfectly tidy EP. Choice gear.

Martin Bellomo - "Howl" (Konstantin Sibold Miracle mix)
Review: Heralding a celebration of the achievements of New York label Thema, the second installment of the Strength In Numbers series turns to yet more of the labels finest operators for distinctive and adventurous approaches to house and techno. Earl Stine has a warm and fuzzy style of deep house to impart on "Get The Curb", while Kosme takes things into a more abstract headspace with the serene "Red Beard". Ark's irrepressible French flair comes bouncing through on the wonderfully psychedelic "Themark", while Konstantin Sibold delivers a tougher techno-infected remix of Martin Bellomo's "Howl".

Earth 2 Moon
Man On The Moon (extended version)
Review: Having debuted on Thema with the finely judged quartet of tracks that made up Transmissions, Norm Talley returns to the label with a ten inch shaped sequel. Anyone who checked out Transmissions will no doubt have wished Talley treated your ears to more of "Man On The Moon" than the three minutes the EP opener afforded. Thankfully a gracefully extended variant of that track which is three times longer (and thus three times better!) lines up on the B Side. Ahead of that Talley indulges in some expertly crafted explorations through rippling, utopian techno on "Earth 2 Moon", which locks into a vicious groove once those rattling hi-hats drop!

Tell me (Late Night Creeper mix)
Review: New York Imprint Thema have always stuck to their guns when it comes to their no frills, no fad musical output and label concept. Now on their 23rd vinyl release, they welcome Norm Talley to the ever growing team of talented and original artists to be signed to Thema. Norm Talley has been belting out flawless and deeply funky music since the mid nineties and his classic synths, rough drums and analogue imperfection stream through his music; "Transmissions" plays exactly that game. Opener "Man On The Moon" sets the tone with techno drums and broken beats, leading the EP confidently into the second track "Pulsate" and its funky rhythms and delirious basslines. On the flip "Space Travla" turns a corner into more cosmic territories with stuttering bass and synths that shoot through late night space. Last but by no means least, "Tell Me"(Late Night Creeper Mix) beams with toms, reverbing bass and a groove that projects the whole EP into seriously high class levels and makes it one of our favorites of the week at Juno.

Review: In the first installment of an ambitious compilation project that celebrates the work of US-born imprint Thema Records, Strength In Numbers Part 1 features an all star cast from the history of the label, delivering fresh productions for the occasion. Norm Talley takes us on a dark and enchanting ride to the stars on "Space Talk", while Damien K Sahri gets into a more shuffled deep house abstraction entitled "Everything".
