New Brazilian Trio EP
New Brazilian Trio EP (12" + insert)
Cat: TLM 027. Rel: 23 Feb 22
Jazz
  1. Arcanjo Miguel (8:18)
  2. Chick (8:03)
  3. Samba For Petrucciani (5:35)
  4. Maraca - Funk (5:36)
  5. Change Of Plan (7:12)
Review: Although he began his career as an 11-year-old prodigy back in 1990, it took Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and producer Erik Escobar until 2020 to deliver a debut solo album. Last year he joined Ten Lovers Music to deliver a follow-up - a full-length collaboration with Stretto - and here returns to the label with his latest project: a 'new Brazilian trio' that draws inspiration from a combination of jazz-fusion, samba-jazz, jazz-funk and spiritual jazz. It's a brilliant EP all told, with highlights including the high-octane brilliance of 'Samba For Petrucciani', the carnival-ready excellence of the Azymuth-esque 'Arcanjo Miguel', the jazz guitar sporting laidback vibes of 'Change of Plan' and the colourful jazz-funk of 'Maracana Funk'.

Best Of Various
  1. Erik Escobar - "Memories" (11:10)
  2. Cormac Fulton - "Perplexed" (5:56)
  3. Lorenzo Dewberry - "Time Machine" (7:31)
  4. Gee W - "MarshMellow" (5:18)
Review: Ten Lovers Music hit their quarter century of releases with a various artist compilation they are calling 'Best Of.' They're not wrong to be fair, with a magnificent 11 minute spiritual house workout from Erik Escobar kicking things off. It's a hard act to follow but Cormac Fulton does so by sinking you down into a lush, jazz-licked groove with swirling and romantic pianos. Lorenzo Dewberry rolls out the cosmic house grooves for a life-affirming trip to the stars and Gee W's 'MarshMellow' keeps it classy with plenty of soft tones, warm chords and seductive sax lines.

Rough Times EP
Cat: TLM 028. Rel: 19 May 22
Jazz
  1. Rough Time (4:29)
  2. Mystic Blends (5:33)
  3. That Feeling (5:08)
  4. Pathways (4:58)
Review: Future Jazz Ensemble is a project from Italian producer Nicola Penna, aka Nasty Boy, who has also recorded for Sahko Records and ANMA. Aside from some self-released records, this is the first official offering from the project which offers a noirish sound nodding to nu-jazz in in its subtle assimilation of electronic processes into a jazz context. Skittering drum machine patterns collide with snatches of instrumentation, with noirish Rhodes chords as a common thread binding everything together into a moody, musically dexterous whole. If you cherish fresh approaches which hold true to the roots of jazz culture, you're sure to love this record.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Wind Of Seven Seas (3:19)
  2. Orion's Belt (3:58)
Review: Brian "Javonntte" Garrett has been cooking up his most stylish and superb deep house sounds for very nearly a quarter of a century now. He has done so on just about any decent label you care to mention and for this crucial 7" he lands on Ten Lovers Music. It is a mind-expanding affair as always with Brian and opens with the shuffling, samba-tinged grooves of 'Wind Of Seven Seas' complete with twinkling keys, pirouetting rhythms and funky bass. On the flip is 'Orion's Belt' which is a cosmic workout that never lets up.

Toshiafro EP
Cat: TLM 026. Rel: 08 Dec 21
Funk
  1. Future Flight (5:58)
  2. Akari (7:15)
  3. Toshiafro (7:33)
  4. Amber (6:13)
Review: Nu-jazz' crossover into broken beat is a liminal and tumultuous border. But Takashi Nakazato, along with his band Galavanters, seem to have succeeded in capturing its lesser-trodden terrain, wherein a live ensemble keeps its tunes danceable, not dubious. 'Toshiafro' is a four track vinyl EP, carefully composed by Nakazato to convey a wholly original foray through his take on modern electronica amnd jazz fusion, from the major-toned Eastern spritzings of 'Akari' to the closing, liquid drum n' bass tumult of 'Amber'.

  2. Paul David Gillman Presents Red Earth Design - "Secret Garden" (reprise) (6:36)
  3. ReeKee - "Here We Stay" (6:01)
  4. ReeKee - "Next To Me" (4:40)
  5. Javonntte - "Satellites & Dreamers" (4:12)
Review: Manchester label Ten Lovers Music returns this week with five new offerings of quality deep house music. Maltese producer Melchior Sultana takes you on an evocative and soulful journey with 'Spectres' led by its creamy Rhodes melody, while 'Secret Garden' (reprise) by Paul David Gillman Presents Red Earth Design is a beatless neo-classical arrangement that's perfect to watch the Balearic sunset. Elsewhere, Italian producer ReeKee offers up a couple of dusty late night numbers in the vein of the Detroit deep house sound, and the ever impressive Javonntte closes it out with 'Satellites & Dreamers'.
