Review: The Piano Choir was Danny Mixon, Harold Mabern, Hugh Lawson, Nat Jones, Ron Burton, Sonelius Smith, Stanley Cowell and Webster Lewis and they dropped the second volume of their Handscapes album in 1975. It was a brilliantly beguiling mix of soul jazz sounds, avant grade ideas, occasionally naff bits of cheese and plenty of musical character that have made it a cult favourite. It's also a hard one to find for a good price so this welcome reissue relieves you of that chore. Amongst the highlights are the tender piano charms of 'The Need To Smile.'

Prince Of Peace (8:48)
Balance (12:41)
Izipho Zam (28:50)
Review: Recorded in 1969 but first released in 1973, "Izipho Zam (My Gifts)" remains one of Pharoah Sanders' most expressive, out-there and enjoyable sets. As this fresh, heavyweight vinyl pressing proves, the album has lost none of its charm. It sees Sanders and his expansive backing band (including Lonnie Liston-Smith on piano) offer up a fine saunter through spiritual soul-jazz ("Prince Of Peace") before going all-out free jazz via two of the most intense and mind-altering workouts you'll ever hear. While the 13-minute "Balance" is a cacophonous and paranoid romp through free-jazz/experimental rock fusion, it's near 30-minute B-side "Izipho Zam" that stands out. Seemingly in a constant state of flux, the piece moves from densely percussive Afro-jazz to wall-of-sound noise-jazz insanity without skipping a beat.

Review: We stocksome of the best hard-to-find jazz, and Charles Tolliver's 1974 live album 'Live In Tokyo' is one such wad of yet-to-be-panned gold. This one's got Stanley Cowell (piano), Clint Houston (bass), and Clifford Barbaro (drums) backing up Tolliver's trumpet, carefully caressing the ears with a soft and free style of bop jazz recorded live at Yubinchokin Hall in Tokyo.

Review: Jazz's black consciousness movement has many famous landmark moments but Musa-Ancestral Streams is one of the more obscure offerings in the grand canon. It's a record of real intimacy that is rather at odds with the grand designs of the likes of John Coltrane, but for that reasons stands out all the more. Cowell's energy and touch are remarkable throughout, as he plays with spirt, passion and freedom that come only once you have truly mastered your instrument. On 'Travelin Man' he really out does himself with an overdubbed ‚duet' featuring himself on both acoustic and electric piano. It's one of many special moments on a special record.

Review: Although he was a member of countless well-regarded bands, jazz trombonist John Gordon found solo success much hard to come by. He only ever released two solo albums - both at the tail end of the 1970s - on Strata-East, with "Step By Step", his '76 debut, arguably being the pick of the pair. Here it gets the reissue treatment for the first time since 1990. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the hypnotic grooves-and-horns of epic opener "Step By Step" and wild lead lines of sparkling workout "Dance of the Ymas", to the smoky, early morning goodness "Making Memories" and the hard-bop influenced "Activity", which features some virtuoso playing from both Gordon and saxophonist Roland Alexander.

Review: Originally released in 1977, The World Of The Children LP featured Shamek Farrah on production duties and alto saxophone, with special guest Sonelius Smith (of David Murray Big Band fame) on piano, in addition to Kiyoto Fujiwara and Milton Suggs on Bass, Freddie Wrenn on drums, Tony Waters on percussion and Joe Gardner on trumpet. An amazing session of free and spiritual soul/jazz that defines the essence of Strata-East - the legendary record label set up by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell in 1971. Remastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London.
