Review: 7" BOXSET EDITION! Having fulfilled his reggae ambitions, Snoop returns to the source with this incredible homage to the original funk that hip-hop spawned from. Referencing Bootsy Collins with his new moniker, he's teamed up with one of Stones Throw's most consummate funk purveyors Dam Funk. We don't need to tell you the result; authentic, sexy and smooth, it's a time machine that whisks us back to the late 70s and early 90s. From the dreamy textures and overdubbed harmonies of "1Question?", the shiny proto-R&B mothership moment "Do My Thang", everything about this screams class. Timeless funk made by two masters, we guarantee this will sound just as hot in 10 or 20 years.

  6. Yang Yang (dub)
Review: The deadpan tones of Berlin based singer songwriter Anika see a welcome return on this eponymously title EP for the Stones Throw label. This six track collection is dominated by the towering cover version of the Chromatics classic "In The City" which has been a long term staple of Anika's live show's with backing band Beak>. Whereas the Italians Do It Better was all sultry Italo disco and delicate vocals from Ruth Radelet, Anika's cover is one take rattling punk funk at it's finest and her own distinctive vocal delivery lends the track a sense of palpable desperation. Dub versions of album favourites "Ying Yang" and "No One's There" features alongside further cover's of tracks by The Kinks, Shocking Blue and The Crystals.

Review: The heart warming sleeve notes that accompany this collection of old Dam Funk tracks from Peanut Butter Wolf demonstrate the levels of trust and belief that run through the label. It becomes apparent that Dam has been making music for as long as anyone can remember and his complete trust in PBW to filter through his weighty archive of material is matched by the Stones Throw boss's sense of giddiness at how exciting it is. The end results features here on Adolescent Funk, where across two slabs of vinyl your senses are treated to fourteen tracks of raw 80s funk. Some of them are somewhat lacking in finesse and subtlety, but the sheer talent and panache for production inherent throughout more than compensates for this, with tracks such as the beatdown brilliance of "The Telephone Call" and proto lo-fi electro of "I Love Life" leaving a lasting impression in particular. Additional words of praise go to the brilliant cover art on another fine release from the Stones Throw crew.

Review: Dam-Funk recently took to Twitter to bemoan the disparity between the positive feedback he gets from listeners, and the largely disappointing reviews from music critics. It's certainly odd that critics have been sniffy about Invite The Light, his fourth solo full-length for Stones Throw, because it's arguably his most varied, accessible and attractive album to date. Packed full of proper songs, cheeky dancefloor workouts, and high profile collaborations - pals Q-Tip, Snoop Dogg, Computer Jay, Jody Whatley and Nite Jewel all lend a hand - it's an album that still sounds hugely futuristic, despite Dam-Funk's reliance on vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and '80s soul, funk and boogie influences.

Review: Record Store Day can, at times, feel like a gratuitous rehashing of classic material that is only good for clogging up the pressing plants. However, when you're presented with an official compilation of golden Egyptian Lover material from the 1980s, you begin to reconsider and to think that perhaps the world is indeed a good place. Stones Throw have done us the courtesy of bringing together THE BEST material from the man into an eight-sided LP monster containing a 20 page booklet to boot. Within, you have the best material from albums like On The Nile, One Track Mind, 1984. If you're into REAL electro, then you can't possibly look elsewhere - especially if it sounds as good and as crisp as this. Totally unmissable and worth every but of pocket shrapnel.

Electro
  1. Egypt, Egypt (3:37)
  2. Girls (3:35)
Review: Ah yes, here is the famous repress of this year's Record Store Day reissue from the one and only Egyptian Lover; amorous by name and amorous by trade. The two tunes here are classic cuts from 1984's seminal On The Nile LP, a piece of work which blurred the lines between hip-hop, dance, and, well... Egyptian music! "Egypt, Egypt" is a banger on all accounts, a powerful concoction of 808n cowbells, vocoder vocals and a Casio reinterpretation of the stereotypical Egyptian sing song melody - you'll know what we mean as soon as it drops. Over on the flip you have "Girls", another blaster from the same LP, yet here the Lover is much more focussed on the power of the beats, and those heavy 808 kicks burst out of all angles. In short, it's nothing short of a total KILLER.

Review: "Ruff Draft", originally released in 2003, is a sought-after album that remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalogue. This has freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers, and an uncharacteristically sample-heavy approach that is as banging as it is experimental.

  1. Antonym - "Cinnamon Air"

  3. Crash Course In Science - "Flying Turns"
  4. Das Ding - "HTSA"
Review: We were wondering when J Rocc would put his nimble fingers all over what was this year's most compelling reissue compilations. The Stones Throw associate does so in style, breaking down Antonym's "Cinnamon Air" into a deranged, breakbeat-filtered hip-hop excursion. His Work on that "Dirty" track by Hard Corps is also inspirational, resuscitating those italo lyrics more than ever before, but the "Flying Turns" remix is simply brilliant, where Rocc transforms it into a very modern and aware house beatdown. Das Ding is also given a retouch on their "HTSA", re-inventing those snares and working closely on its previously more muffled arrangement. J Rocc on top as always!

  2. Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
  3. Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
  4. Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.
