Vaxxer EP
Vaxxer EP (12")
Cat: SPEC 018. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Vaxxer (5:41)
  2. Oxidant (6:01)
  3. Multivers (6:57)
  4. Shifty (5:49)
Review: Having spent the last 18 months guesting on numerous compilations and multi-artist EPs, rising electro star Arsonist Recorder has finally been given a chance to showcase his wares across an entire vinyl EP. He's grasped the opportunity with both hands, filling his debut outing with club-rocking rhythms, foreboding Drexciyan bass, and similarly mind-altering synthesizer sounds. We're particularly big fans of EP opener "Vaxxer", which feels like a breathless, hyper-speed rush through the farthest reaches of the galaxy, though the deeper, more evocative "Multivers" and fizzing "Shifty" are also top-notch. As debut EPs go, this is pretty darn good.

Extererri (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SPEC 019. Rel: 17 Sep 20
  1. Extererri (5:41)
  2. Extererri (Datawave remix) (6:46)
  3. Smooth Vibrato (5:10)
  4. Smooth Vibrato (Federico Leocata remix) (3:41)
Review: Specimen's latest 12" is heavyweight both metaphorically and literally. It is a talent packed four tracker that opens with the dark wave electro sounds of 'Extererri'. The kicks are rigged, the bass is frazzled, the synths circle around you with an ominous presence. Datawave's remix is more liquid, bulbous and fluid, as well as being riddled with acid, while 'Smooth Vibrato' a weird and wonky ride on unbalanced drum loops as steps melodic sequences that seem to get faster. Federico Leocata closes out with a twitchy groove filled with mystery and deep space atmosphere.

Warpaint (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SPEC-003. Rel: 26 Oct 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Warpaint (Original mix)
  2. Warpaint (Hijacker remix)
  3. Warpaint (Santonio remix)
  4. Warpaint (Mantrac aka MR.C remix)
Review: The next release on Paul Rip's Specimen Records is by God of the Machine, the brainchild of deep house and techno maestro, Derrick Thompson a.k.a. Drivetrain. The EP kicks of with the original, a powerful slice of jackin' tribal techno, its bleeps, tones and chants sitting atop a tight percussive groove that's infectious from the first beat to the last drop. Next up comes Hijacker's electro workout. Its beats are old school yet the attitude is set firmly in the future with its square wave bass line, trippy noises and swooping sciKfi pads. Santonio Echols takes it back to Detroit with a simple yet driving tech house rendition containing sublime melodic chords, eerie pads and a hypnotic pad stab that sends tingles up your spine. Mr.C finishes with one of his typically infectious acid workouts, where he adds a cheeky bassline, haunting pads and cowbell pings to blend and morph into the twisted effects of a psychoactive substance.
