Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.

Review: This Soul Jazz release is a definitive collection of New Orleans funk featuring acknowledged masters of funk (The Meters, Eddie Bo, Professor Longhair) next to some of the earlier artists who shaped the meaning of funk. The album is also filled with many rare, sought after and undiscovered funk tracks. It covers the period from the emergence of New Orleans funk in the early 1960's through to the mid 1970's. The album comes with a 40 page booklet presenting a historical explanation to how and why this music came about, and with lots of information about the people involved.

Review: Since 2012, Soul Jazz's Sounds of the Universe offshoot - named, of course, after the imprint's London store - has delivered a string of inspired 12" singles featuring exclusive cuts from the likes of Andres (the brilliant, Latin-tinged house gem "Ribena"), Tevo Howard (the yearning, deep, instrumental synth-pop of "Summer Romance"), and Heatsick (the deliciously wonky "Snakes & Ladders"). Here, they gather together these inspired, previously vinyl-only moments on CD for the first time, alongside a second disc of never before heard cuts. This selection is, of course, every bit as good, and boasts stunning contributions from DJ Stingray (the fluid Detroit electro of "Cytokines"), Seven Davis Jnr, Ras G and Golden Teacher (the dubwise, off-kilter pulse of "Maladroit").

Review: The grandly titled Sounds Of The Universe: Art + Sound 2012-15 sees the always excellent Soul Jazz compile together the series of limited 12" releases the label has issued over the past three years. The double CD release features both these cuts and a whole host of new productions from some like-minded artists, but this LP sampler houses just those previously released tracks. It's a great move by Soul Jazz too, given how rare the original 12"s were and any self-respecting fan of electronic music should check Art + Sound for the Kassem Mosse, Andres, Heatsick and Tenderlonious cuts in particular. Taking grip of the entire B-side, Mosse's heat treated track "Staat Aus Glas" is 13 minutes long but could easily go one for three times as long without losing any of its charm.

Review: This second LP sampler for Soul Jazz's grandly titled Sounds Of The Universe: Art + Sound 2012-15 compilation focuses entirely on the new productions the label sought out from a wonderfully thought out cast of contributors. Soul Jazz are refined compilers of all styles and genres and this is a release that should pique the interest of any open-minded fan of electronic music. The chance to bask in some new Golden Teacher material should never be passed up and the Glaswegian collective are at their sweaty best on "Maladroit", and it's also nice to see Capracara, Lord Tusk and Reginald Omas Mamode IV sitting next to productions from Stingray, Africans With Mainframes, and Mike Huckaby. The latter's contribution, "Circles", is a superb example of classicist US deep house that is a highlight of this set.

Review: Soul Jazz Records has investigated the World of New Orleans funk - arguably the original variant of the style - on numerous other occasions - but it's a sound that's always worth revisiting. This edition covers 26 years between 1951 and '77, combining early rhythm and blues workouts from the likes of Gus 'The Groove' Lewis and Dave Bartholomew, with later material from such New Orleans luminaries as Chocolate Milk, Johnny Adams, Eddie Bo and Zilla Mayes (whose torch song "All I Want Is You" provides a fitting conclusion). As usual, Soul Jazz has included a brilliantly comprehensive 44-page booklet, inside which you'll find heaps of historical information, and original photographs sourced from the Ralston Crawford New Orleans Archive.

Review: Hot on the heels of the recent release of Soul Jazz's latest Deutsche Elektronische Musik collection (the third, in total) comes this timely reissue of the 2CD set that started it all. Eight years on from its original release, the collection remains arguably the best primer you can find on "krautrock" and "kosmiche". Full of drowsy, far-sighted 1970s electronic workouts, trippy art-rock and left-of-centre, experimental gems, the collection draws together cuts from German scene titans - think Can, Neu!, Faust, Tangerine Dream, Ash-Ra Tempel, Harmonia and Popul Vuh - and lesser-known artists, with extensive, detailed liner notes to put the kosmiche movement in context. Simply essential.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, Nigeria Soul Fever is apparently Soul Jazz Records' first attempt to document the vibrant West African disco, Afro-funk and boogie scene of the 1970s. As usual, they've done a bang-up job. Noted crate-digging journalist Bill Brewster provides detailed sleeve notes, while the two-disc selection is largely made up of blistering cuts from artists who will be unfamiliar to all but the most studied Afro-disco diggers. The selections from Don Bruce & The Angels, Akin Richards & The Executives and Angela Starr, in particular, are little less than essential, as the continued high prices of their original 12" single releases neatly proves. If you're after a West African disco primer, look no further.

Review: Another work of Soul Jazz curatorial gold: Nigeria Soul Fever is a detailed gatefold trip into one of Nigeria's richest chapters in music. Heavy trade restrictions allowed them to develop their own style without too much US or European influence and the result is an array of national talent who largely remained legends within their own borders. The range is mesmerizing; the sinewy synth and playground vocal Q&A of Benis Cletin's "Get Up & Dance", the ballroom disco soul of Tee Mac's "Living Everyday", the soulful afrofunk folk of Jimmy Sherry's "Nwaeze", the gut-punching power of Arakatula's album finale "Wake Up Africa". This is a treasure trove of unreleased gems that capture a truly unique time.

Review: On Boombox 1, the dusty-fingered crate diggers at Soul Jazz Records have turned their attention to the nascent hip-hop scene developing in New York in the late '70s onwards, gathering together independently released disco-rap and electro released between 1979 and '82. Accompanied by a 40-page booklet telling the story of rap's independent pioneers in impressive detail, it's another essential history lesson. You'll naturally find hard-to-find cuts from visionaries including Spoonie Gee (the quick-fire rhymes and low-slung disco breaks of "The New Rap Language"), TJ Swann and Master Jay, plus killer selections from virtually unknown names. Check, for example, the synth-laden boogie-rap of Neil B's "Body Rock", the hip-shakin' disco hustle of Bramsam's "Move Your Body", and the rubbery brilliance of Sweet G's "Boogie Feelin' Rap".

Review: Given the success of Disco Patrick's first collection of "independent disco, modern soul and boogie", it's little surprise to see Soul Jazz ask him to helm a second volume. While there are one or two selections that will be familiar to certified disco diggers - Mad Dog Fire Department's "Cosmic Funk", High Frequency's delicious "Summertime", Dunn Pearson Jnr's expansive "Groove On Down", Paper Dolls' heavyweight "Get On Down" - the vast majority of Disco Patrick's selections are thrillingly obscure or overlooked. Thus, there's a chance to savour the wonky, horn-heavy disco-funk looseness of Skip Jackson & The Natural Experience's "Micro Wave Boogie", the rubbery bass and sweaty Latin percussion of Montego Joe's "Freestyle", and the Afro-disco brilliance of Timmy Thomas' overlooked "Africano".

Review: Last year's Disco (A Fine Selection Of Independent Disco, Modern Soul & Boogie 1978-82) compilation from Soul Jazz offered undeniable proof that few diggers deserve their reputation as much as Dutch discotheque scholar Disco Patrick. Given the reception, it's no surprise to see that the London label have commissioned Patrick to undertake a second assessment of the genre's lesser known gems with the focus here on the years 1976-80. The first of two double LP vinyl samplers to accompany the full CD release finds Pat pulling out gems like the extremely pricey Skip Jackson curio "Micro Wave Boogie" and T.K. Disco treat "Cosmic Funk" by Mad Dog Fire Department. Any current disco spinners will savour Patrick's efforts here.

Review: If you are going to call yourself Disco Patrick its best you know your boogie onions and few could dispute the Dutch digger is among the most knowledgeable of disco scholars on the basis of his Soul Jazz compilation last year. The Disco Patrick armoury of rare gems is well stocked however, and his second selection of Independent Disco Modern Soul & Boogie for Soul Jazz is every bit as good. Across the ten tracks featured on this second of two double vinyl samplers to augment the full CD compilation Patrick lays down some supreme disco treats like the low slung "Africano" by Timmy Thomas, the clap happy antics of "Strut On (Strutt Your Stuff)" from Otis Brown's Grade A and psyched out slinker "I Feel Like Love" by Jazz.

Review: If you're in the market for a beginner's guide to krautrock and "kosmiche", then the first two volumes of Soul Jazz's Deutsche Elektronische Musik series should be essential listening. This third volume - the first for four years - should be on that list, too. It arguably goes deeper than its predecessors, combining cuts from pioneering electronic and art-rock bands like Neu!, Cluster and Popol Vuh with tracks from lesser-known artists such as Michael Bundt, Dronsz and Achim Reichel. Musically, it's also far more diverse than its predecessors, containing as much space-rock and proto-punk as early electronic experimentation and droning alternative rock. As ever, the accompanying sleeve notes from author David Nobbs expand on the story in brilliant detail.

Review: Way back in 1994, on the back of a successful first appearance in London by original 1960s Boss Nova star Joyce, Soul Jazz Records decided to record a special album of fresh Brazilian music "with a UK mentality". The project was the brainchild of Soul Jazz founder Stuart Baker and future Far Out Records founder Joe Davis. The subsequent set was recorded in Rio de Janeiro, rush-released and subsequently became something of a "must-have" for Brits interested in Brazilian music (the cast list of musicians contained a number of genuine legends, while the featured music touched on many of the most significant musical movements the country had produced over the previous two decades). This edition - the first in 20 years - presents all of the original tracks in freshly remastered form, meaning the unique collection now sounds better than ever.
