  3. Million Mile Love (6:50)
Review: With his deliciously deep With You By The Lake 12" on UntilMyHeartStops still ringing in our ears, Arnaldo drops his first EP for Smallville for three years. Unsurprisingly, this two is a wonderfully fluid delight, with all three tracks offering a near perfect balance of lolloping grooves, glassy-eyed melodies and eyes-shut chords. A-side "Moving On" sets the tone, layering dreamy pads and cascading melodies atop a shuffling groove. He gets a little more forthright on the cymbal-heavy deep house pump of "Never Used To Be Better", before calming things down with the heavenly throb, woozy spoken vocal samples and cyclical melodies of "Million Mile Love".

  1. Morning Funk
  2. Iris
Review: After collaborating together on the Cloverleaf Days EP a couple of years ago, Jacques Bon and Christopher Rau have teamed up again for another brooding two-tracker on Smallville. As you might expect, "Morning Funk" is a sinister little beast, using haunting keys and a subtle but propulsive beat to create the perfect up all night vibe. "Iris" is a more warm and mellow affair, although still executed with an endearing strangeness to it. As ever Smallville are one of those go-to labels for a special breed of deep house that keeps things simple but says a lot in the process.

  4. Vision Of Blue
Review: In addition to the odd collaboration with Chrissy Rau and Nicolas Villebrun, the wonderfully named Jacques Bon is a long term affiliate of Smallville Records, holding things down in Paris for the Hamburg operation. Having contributed a rather tasty lopsided jacker to the label's Thirtyfive Ways compilation last year, afull EP for Smallville is long overdue and the four tracks on this Two Hearts 12" will leave fans of the Hamburg operation wanting much more. Bon can do dreamy and sumptuous, as on opening track "Jasmine's Dream," or deep and contemplative ("Sunday Evening") whilst the B Side demonstrates the Parisian is fully geared to produce tracks calibrated for mid set detonation. "The Sails" is as perfect an example of musically rich gliding deep house as you will find right now.

  1. Part 1 (18:45)

Review: One of the more intriguing Record Store Day releases here, as Hamburg's Smallville team up with the city's Golden Pudel venue to present a special LP edition of a live set from Benjamin Brunn. Recorded during Brunn's performance at the Pudel in 2012, the full set was initially released as a CD through the affiliated Pudel Produkte label the next year. This vinyl edition presents two 20 minute sections of Brunn's performance, and features some cozy, swirling and enveloping electronics crafted using the G1 and G2 Nord Modular synths. The record is made all the more collectable by the presentation which sees Pudel man Alex Solman and Smallville's Stefan Marx contribute their distinctive artwork to the front and reverse of the cover respectively.

  3. Capsule
Review: Hamburg's Smallville is not only a record label but a record store based in the city, and Dionne aka Just Von Ahlefeld is no regular artist, but Smallville's co-owner and a highly established music producer. After releases on Jus-Ed's Underground Quality, the Dial sub-label Laid and fledgling deep house imprint Tersiptone, Dionne is "Back On The Planet" with a heavenly three track EP. The title track eases us in with luxurious ease; long drawn out synths soar gently above the rattling echo of tinny bells and soft shakers. Soothing and only ever subtly gear shifting, it's a brilliantly executed piece of deep house. B-Side "What You Are" follows suit in its elegance but garners a chuggier, more upfront beat with vocal appeal. Finally, "Capsule" is light and airy, flirting with bubbles of sound and a round and warm bassline.

  3. Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
  4. Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

Review: Hamburg purveyors of the deep Smallville are back with the debut of L'amour Fou, The Dujuan EP is the work of David Moufang aka Move D with Benoit Bouquin and Taipei based Marco Wollenberg. While opening cut "Sunday Haze" may sound like more generic fare, with its emotive house organs and all; the trio really find their sound on the B side when they dive into the deep and abstract. The evocative title track for instance, with its razor sharp and wandering arpeggio which is backed by a wonderfully hypnotic arrangement. Final offering "The Last Call" incorporates live instrumentation (mainly that sombre fingerpicked guitar riff), over ambient textures and reverb drenched field recordings with dusty rhythm patterns. Like most anything involving Moufang you really can't go wrong: and this one's no exception!

Review:  As you might expect, there's plenty to enjoy on FourtyFour Ways, the first of a number of EPs celebrating the German deep house imprint's tenth anniversary. Studio Barnhaus co-founder and recent Numbers artist Kornel Kovacs leads the way with "Space Jam", a decidedly cosmic chunk of intergalactic deep house that comes laden with shimmering synthesizers, echo-heavy R&B vocal samples and a killer US garage style bassline. Elsewhere, Smallpeople attempt to out-deep the competition with the deliciously dreamy "Cricket Orchestra", Juniper doffs a cap to classic Detroit techno on the sci-fi throbber "Variations In Grey", and L'Amour Fou drop a sprightly chunk of soft focus positivity with the ricocheting drum machine hits, eyes-closed melodies and booming acid bass of "Da'an".

Review: Don't be fooled by the doodle on the sleeve of this Laps release, underneath the packaging lies a double whammy of micro techno - the "Jolie EP". "Fog Off" builds up from the sparsest elements, driving itself onwards with an increasingly hard-hitting stab - the fluid bass keeps all the elements shuffling along in fine style while watery grooves trickle underneath in a detailed yet understated production. A lovely Smallville release.

  3. Dark & Stormy (7:13)
Review: A Day In The Life, last year's album on Mule Musiq from Peter 'Lawrence' Kersten may well have seen the Hamburg producer indulge his interest in ambient sounds fully, but he's back to the distinctly European flavour of deep house he's renowned for here. Issued through his own Smallville label, Manhattan presents three Lawrence productions that all feel quite understated but will invariably weave their way into your affections the more you play around with them in sets. The closing number "Dark & Stormy" is the most immediate, thanks to that three bar loop and crisp, focused drums whilst "Nowhere Is A Place" seems to be the perfect set opener. Classy as usual from Lawrence.

  4. Arnaldo - "Screaming With A Blocked Nose" (7:04)
Review: In the sales notes sent to record stores, Smalleville has described this multi-artist affair as "a club night from start to finish". Certainly, the four tracks are pleasingly varied, moving from the 109 BPM bliss of Makybee Diva's untitled dream-house shuffler, to the energetic acid house/deep house fusion of "Monkeys On My Roof" by L'Amour Fou, a collaborative project whose members include the legendary David 'Move D' Moufang. Elsewhere, Arnaldo delivers a near perfect chunk of Detroit techno inspired deep house hypnotism ("Screaming With A Blocked Nose"), and Chicagoan producer Snad combines sweaty, bumpin' grooves and becalmed synthesizer motifs on the excellent "Excerptz".

  3. Stotheh (6:09)
Review: Having recently impressed with their contribution to the F*ck Reality series, Moomin returns to the comforting surrounds of long-time home Smallville Records. As usual, Aquarama sees him exploring the deeper, more melancholic side of house music, with typically impressive results. The headline attraction is undoubtedly a stellar rework of Peven Everett's 2001 soulful house classic "I Can't Believe I Loved Her", which Moonin has successfully turned into a misty-eyed chunk of melodious, bittersweet deep house bliss. In comparison, the other two tracks don't sparkle quite as much, but are still hugely enjoyable. The title track - all cyclical acid motifs, drifting vocal samples, shuffling beats and chiming melodies - is particularly tasty.

Review: Smallville present a deliciously hypnotic taste of what to expect from the forthcoming Moomin album, further showcasing the Berlin based producer's penchant for deeply driving house sounds. It's pretty difficult not to get swept up by the tender melodic sound at the core of "Sweet Sweet" which swings in and out of focus amidst some subtly effective drum rhythms. Flipside, the track is squeezed into what begins as a minimal shuffle by Oskar Offermann, before gradually unfurling into something jacking and euphoric. "The Game" is a swampy, pensive finale, with woozy deep lying melodies gently cascading around loose limbed syncopation.

A Minor Thought is his second full-length, and first since acclaimed 2011 debut The Story About You. Review: Two years on from the release of his glistening debut album, Hamburg-based producer Christopher Rau delivers a self explanatory follow-up. Throughout his short career, Rau has impressed by taking a sideways glance at deep house, delivering a mix of vivid electronic melodies, off-kilter rhythms and tactile synths. Two continues this approach, offering both floor-friendly deep house atmospherics ("Sound Shake", "Unlimited Dancemoves" and the crackly blues influences of "Ciao") and wonky, synth-laden beat-scapes (check the fluid swing of "Apple Snapple Tracking" and the decidedly tropical "Swag Lude"). The album's best moment, though, is "Weird Alps", a kind of bittersweet synth-pop/deep house fusion that bristles with melodic intent.

Review: Christopher Rau's latest outing on Smallville - his sixth in total, including two albums - is a particularly jolly affair, boasting a quartet of tried-and-tested cuts. There's something extra-cheery about opener "Yamato", where jammed-out organ riffs combine perfectly with a darting synth bassline and unfussy drum machine hits. "Odd Regrets" is a sweatier deep house drum jam, while "Just For You" reinvents rave-era piano house for the bass music generation. Finally, "Early Korn" is a picturesque and hazy deep house jam full of tumbling melodies and chiming electronics. All four tracks are excellent, suggesting that this is an EP that may stay in your record box for a while.

Review: Smallville Records follow that excellent STL long player by ushering in the welcome return of Christopher Rau for his first release of note on the Hamburg label since his second LP Two back in 2012. Rau has of course remained relatively busy in this interim period with some records for the likes of Office, Junkyard and Derive Schallplatten, but it's always a pleasure to see a SMALLVILLE cat no attached to his name. The three track Mehris Mood is as dreamy and abstracted as you would expect; the title track for example contains enough bump to drive any dancefloor but the hi hats are caked in fuzz and there's the most sumptuous set of chords at the core. "Friends" is similarly hypnotic, the emphasis of the production weaving between rhythm and melody with aplomb, but "Cherry Jam" might just be the best thing here. Drums and key samples appear to poised in diametrically opposite directions, given the track a curious groove that's reminiscent of so much Chris Rau.

Review: Even by the standards of nerd-friendly underground deep house, Germany's Smallpeople work slowly. This debut album has been three years in the making, during which time they've released just a handful of 12" singles. Like much of their previous output, Salty Days is very deep; in fact, some of the tracks are so understated they'd be greeted by whispers on the dancefloor. There are more uptempo moments, of course - see the fluid snappiness of "Down With Your Vision" or mildly sweaty "Beauclair" - but the overall mood is intoxicatingly deep and atmospheric. In truth, it's all the better for it. You see, at times Salty Days is mesmerizing.

Review: Hamburg deep house cognoscenti Julius Steinhoff and Dione return for their second full length as Smallpeople, following up 2012's much lauded Salty Days and some sporadic EPs on their Smallville and Fuck Reality imprints respectively. "Afterglow" is a solid effort that continues with their fascination of classic U.S. deep house derivatives, all reinterpreted through a vibrant modern lens. From the sunny and dusted down urban blues of opener "Magic Interference", the emotive Chicago influence on late night grooves like "Hearts At Whole" or "All States Of Dawn" (particularly the latter with its irresistible jacked vocals), through to the hypnotic Latin-tinged flavour of "Beyond" or the sublime deep dub of the title track - there's nothing to fault on this fine effort.

Review: It's been a while since Smallpeople last appeared on Hamburg's celebrated Smallville imprint. Amazingly, this is their first release on the imprint for three years. Happily, they appear to have retained their famed sense of atmosphere, dropping three winding deep house gems that variously soothe and seduce the senses. The expansive, melody-rich "Blissful Limbo" sets the tone via sinewy strings, tactile grooves and yearning vocal samples, before "Lowrider Anarchy" goes charging off towards the dancefloor via rugged bottom end and smooth melodies. They aptly round things off with "Lazy Lama Legend", the deep house equivalent of wrapping yourself in a duvet and sipping on a fine single malt whisky.
