Planetary Boundaries
Cat: SEM 095. Rel: 01 Mar 18
  1. Profit At The Expense Of Earth (4:06)
  2. Hydraulic Fracturing (8:19)
  3. Planetary Boundaries (6:47)
  4. Geoengineering (7:03)
Review: Hot on the heels of Acronym's fourth full-length, the superb Malm, comes this follow-up single. It sees the ambient explorer and experimental electronica exponent move further towards dancefloor territory, delivering a quartet of hypnotic and far-out cuts inspired by distant moons and asteroid fields. Our pick is probably the mind-altering "Hydraulic Fracturing", a combination of locked-in minimalist techno beats, tumbling electronic pulses and trippy noises that's as sci-fi sounding as they come. Others may be drawn towards the ragged, no-holds barred intensity of closer "Geoengineering" and similarly thrusting title track, or even the foreboding bass and drifting ambient electronics of fine opener "Profit at the Expense of Earth". In other words, it's all rather good,

Elephant Road
Cat: SEM 011R. Rel: 05 May 22
  1. Annie Hall - "Ansia" (feat Arcanoid) (6:07)
  2. Annie Hall - "Natron" (5:20)
  3. Annie Hall - "Wine & Beats" (4:50)
  4. Plant43 - "The Eldrich Meadow" (5:46)
  5. Plant43 - "Extrasolar" (4:54)
  6. Plant43 - "Corporeal Boundries" (5:29)
Review: Second time around for Annie Hall and Plant 43's fabulous Elephant Road mini-album, which first appeared in stores way back in 2009 and has become a sought-after record in recent years. It's the quality of music on show that makes it such an essential purchase. Hall handles side A, sashaying between the dancefloor-ready IDM beauty of 'Ansia (featuring Aracnoid)', the bustling, Autechre-do-'80s electrofunk flex of 'Natron', and the deeper, more immersive 'Wine & Beats'. Plant43's side is equally as inspired and sees him flit between spooky, rolling club cuts (the bleeping 'The Eldrich Meadow'), sun-soaked IDM positivity ('Extra Solar') and deep space electro (the sparkling and shimmering 'Corporeal Boundaries').

  10. Terra (3:25)
  11. Gamma (6:02)
  12. Inerzia (feat Neel) (5:45)
  13. Legami (1:42)
Review: Semantica has long been leading the way when it comes to deep, experimental techno and associated sounds coming out of Spain. On Simone Giudice's Materia (his second album and only third release in two years) ambient, IDM, drone and experimental all feature across the 13 well realised tunes. After a gently atmospheric opener, 'Ghiaccio' grows more frosty and edgy, 'Ricordo' resets the mood with some heavenly bliss and 'Distanza' slows things down to a deep, predatory crawl. Italian crasftsman Neel guests on 'Inerzia', which is one of the many highlights here.

Obscur (remastered)
Obscur (remastered) (12" limited to 100 copies)
Cat: SEM 18. Rel: 14 Jun 21
  1. Obscur (2:35)
  2. Utero (Regis remix) (4:26)
  3. Erosion (4:41)
  4. SS10 (4:34)
  5. AW09 (4:41)
Review: Remastered edition of Svreca's brilliant 2010 release Obscur here on the Madrid based producer's very own Semantica Records. Features Regis' superb rework of 'Utero' in all its rolling and cavernous industrial glory, as well as some more leftfield cuts such as the contorted IDM brain dance of 'Erosion', the cerebral redux of 'SS10' and the mental overdrive of 'AW09' - the kind of track which lay down the blueprint of a singular techno sound that the label continues to create nearly 11 years later. We are still not entirely sure if the EP's name was a tribute to the Swedish 'darkwear' label of the same name, as the original liner notes may suggest, but they could certainly make for perfect musical accompaniment for the runway.

  10. Stanislav Tolkachev - "Golden Teacher" (6:40)
  11. D-leria - "Movimento" (6:19)
  12. Simone Giudice - "Pace" (6:34)
Review: Little is known about Semantica's new techno compilation 'Draw The Line', other than what it simply draws the line at: rubbish techno. Perhaps that should go without saying, though, which we assume to be the reason why they've remained so silent about the V/A's intention; a burst of digital noise on the front cover introduces a medley of tunes from Anthony Linell, Jonas Kopp, Claudio PRC & Blazej Malinowski, Valentino Mora, D-Leria, Sciahri & Desroi, Simone Giudice and Svreca.

Victory Over The Sun Remixed

  2. Red Skies (Vledder remix) (5:05)
  3. Before The Rain (Grand River remix) (5:54)
  4. Emerging Sights (Anthony Linell remix) (8:32)
  5. Black Spheres (Ptwiggs remix) (3:52)
  6. Celestial Crusade (E-Saggila remix) (4:27)
  7. Victory Over The Sun (Svreca remix) (6:36)
  8. Eternal Dusk (Ettkeiz Kroff remix) (4:54)
Review: Wanderwelle & Bandhagens Musikforening's masterful Victory Over The Sun album gets skilfully reinterpreted by some of techno's most forward thinking protagonists. Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. There is more energy to the busted beats and hidden vocal sounds of Celestial Crusade (E-Saggila remix) and plenty more greatness through the other tracks.
