Review: Sect's first release is by DJ Bone. Key innovator of the techno sound, his label Subject Detroit has put out release after release of the highest possible standard. Alongside his awe-inspiring DJ sets, this has ensured his status as a living legend in techno music history. Sect number one offers a selection of beautifully crafted, warm, harmonic Detroit techno soul, versatile for sets of a variety of different styles.

The Heavy Thinker EP

Techno
Bazzar
Heavy Thinker
Power
Rise
Review: The Heavy Thinker EP finds the legend that is DJ Skull back on SECT to regale our ears and limbs with further precious techno and house gems! "Bazzar" hits the spot with beautifully harmonious synths and a techno funk guitar lick that will keep you dancing forever. "Heavy Thinker" is a delirious peak time dance floor killer, working organic drum programming against techno siren and ominous kalimba hook. "Power" is all about the old school Detroit strings and tones, setting a steady pace to keep the momentum going into the small hours. Finally, "Rise" has those unmistakable Chicago house values emerging once more, as keys and strings lift the spirits to elevate mind and body.

The Dark Knight
Promise Of Peace
Reboot
Big Girls
Review: Sect returns to the heart of the history once more. Chicago's legacy is finally represented on the label by one of the finest producers of this city and sound, DJ Skull. Words can't do justice to the legacy of this legend of house and techno music. For almost three decades Skull has produced of some of the finest dancefloor tracks ever made, be it through Saber (Trax), DJAX, Hybrid, Majesty Recordings, Tresor, or many others. Here the Dark Knight offers four very special cuts that reaffirm his legendary status. The title track combines the most up-to-date techno production techniques with the inimitable Chicago jacking sound. "Promise Of Peace" retrieves traditional house values on the mellower end of the musical scale, while "Reboot" gets back to the straight-up techno, with some nicely understated acid elements; and finally "Big Girls" is informed by both reggae dub and forward thinking techno.

Maschinenhaus EP

Up
Maschinenhaus (part 1)
Maschinenhaus (part 2)
Review: Sect follows up its brilliant Surgeon and Silent Servant featuring Jolka 12" with this sublime EP from techno stalwart Fanon Flowers. Despite being born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, exactly halfway between Detroit and Chicago, the sounds of this record are very much leaning toward the stripped back industrial machine sounds of the former, with the pulsing heartbeat kick drum on "Up" alone something that lingers long in the memory. The relentless, fast paced loop brings to mind Motor City royalty ala Hood and Mills. Both Parts 1 and 2 of "Maschinenhaus" are glistening lessons in stripped back minimal funk, with the cavernous, croaking atmospherics of Part 1 worthy of particular mention.

Phenomenal EP

Phenomenal
Phenomenal (Substance remix)
Review: As a staunch representative of Midwest techno since the mid-nineties, Fanon Flowers has always skirted on the periphery of the scene rather than getting placed on the pedestal many of his neighbours do, but this return to UK's Sect Records sees a further widening of his reach, with this particular record embracing his dub techno side with a cavernous chord deployment and plenty of metallic hits. Substance is on deadly form for the remix, trimming said chord down to a fine point and adding some welcome funk into the arrangement to a thoroughly engrossing end.

Quien Es?
Quien Es? (12")
Cat: SECT 13. Rel: 26 Nov 12

Ceased To Gasp
Remain
Review: Having swiftly carved a niche for himself amongst the likes of Perc, Ben Gibson returns to Sect to deliver more of his brooding and engaging techno. There's a great emphasis on sound design and atmospherics in the two tracks on Quien Es?, as ominous clangs and tense tones hang heavy over rugged drum workouts. "Ceased To Gasp" is the more industrial of the two, but still allows for a melodic slant in the cavernous echoes that define the track. "Remain" adopt a swirling, psychedelic approach to sonic decoration that draws you in just as it continues flooring you, like all good techno should. Highly recommended.

Five
Five (Surgeon remix)
Five (Silent Servant remix)
Review: Hats off to boutique techno imprint Sect for securing the services of two of techno's finest, Surgeon and Silent Servant. Both the UK stalwart and the Sandwell District collaborator turn in tough, raw and generally brilliant remixes of "Five" from Croatian techno producer Jolka. Surgeon's remix is characterised by a thumping kick and mindf*ck synth washes that form the ryhtmic thrust for a seriously tight groove - exactly the kind of quality and attention to detail that Mr Child's loyal following demand after so many years of excellence. This shares a side of wax with the Silent Servant remix, which takes the Sandwell District on tour with a crackly, subterranean effort underpinned by a robust 7am bassline that borrows deep inside your brain. The original is given pride of place on the A Side, and is in no way star struck by the machine funk royalty showcased on the flip, which is a huge compliment in itself. Highly recommended.

Lessons On Emptiness
Motor Zerox
Review: London based label Sect salute Spain's techno history with their tenth release, represented by highly respected techno producer and DJ Victor Martinez. Psychedelia-tinged tracks are the order of the day here as Victor steps up the pace and sets the standard. "The Infiltrator", Chapters 1 & 2 are both moody and mysterious slices of voodoo magic from Martinez and firmly nod to the dark hours of techno. Flip to the B, and "Lessons On Emptiness" is just as menacing, with weird samples and indecipherable vocals flying throughout. "Motor Zerox" leans to a slightly lighter atmosphere with rumbling percussion sections and a hook melody. Another killer 12" from Sect.

It's All For You (Album Sampler 1)
Cat: SECTCDVS 1. Rel: 30 Jan 12

Techno
Victor Martinez - "Dav To Dub"
D Knox - "I'm Sorry" (remix)
Fanon Flowers - "Invisible Life"
Review: Sect Records' recent compilation It's All For You showcased the exceptionally high standard of the label's roster as well as introducing some talent to the world, and this, the first 12" sampler from the album, selects three of the compilation's finest tracks for vinyl treatment. Victor Martinez takes over the A-Side with "Dav To Dub", combining heavily delayed chords filtered to breaking point, while a massive kick drum propels everything along, and a jazzy piano melody adds some subtle ambience. On the flip, D'Knox's "I'm Sorry (remix)", is a sparse number contrasting soothing chords with micro-loops which contain the spectre of disco, with a rapid rhythmic flutter and chittering melody at its core, while Fanon Flowers closes with "Invisible Life", a murky production filled with chords that ripple like sheet metal over a flurry of 909 rimshots.

Surveillance Network EP (incl. Skirt remix)
Cat: SECT 16. Rel: 27 May 13

Techno
Linear Progression
Up For Lost
Tears (Skirt mix)
Shattered Dreams
Review: Autoreply boss Dicken Lean aka OCH returns to Sect, a UK label waddling in the dubbier end of techno. OCH first appeared on Sect in 2011 when the label released It's All For You, compilation, an extensive selection of deeper techno cuts from artists like Jeroen Search, Jolka, AnD and Fanon Flowers. OCH's track "Tears" made the cut, which reappears on his latest Surveillance Network missive, only having undergone a murky Skirt remix. "Linear Progression" sees OCH's love of tribal percussion thrown in among resonators and reverb, while "Up For Lost" features unusually suitable bongo drumming pitched against filtered saw waves that sweep across the tracks face. "Shattered Dreams" closes the EP with something Disney sounding, but given the cloudy Actress treatment.

Dimensions EP

Techno
Parralel Lives
Section A
Inverse
Review: The Dimensions EP can be seen as a veritable coup from the Sect label, as iconic Dutch techno artist Jeroen Search made his label debut with some typically wall rattling techno functionalism. Able to flaunt a discography that reaches deep into the early nineties with releases across Mills' Axis imprint, M_Rec LTD, Traut and more, Search's tireless energy for one take productions has seen him at his most productive this year and as always his tracks still retain a finely sculpted feel regardless of his preferred approach. Swiftly spiralling undercurrents of analogue acid merge in synchronicity with the tightly wound drums to provide one relentlessly driven groove on "Paralell Lives" with intermittent ascendant hat rolls and subaqueous keys worthy of the Something In The Sky series only serving to further hypnotise your senses. Complementing this, "Section A" is gruff Fachwerk style concrete techno at its finest and "Inverse" demonstrates Search's ease for producing well crafted minimalism.
