SALT002 (12")
Cat: SALT 002. Rel: 28 Apr 16
Techno
  1. 92 Spacedrum Orchestra - "Raw Bass" (dub 1) (6:28)
  2. Tv Out - "Always Anyways" (7:54)
  3. Hymns - "Route Acid" (6:06)
  4. TUC - "4x5_83x2" (6:40)
Review: Aussie imprint Salt Mines made something of an impact with their debut release, a multi-artist EP that offered a distinctive take on the dreamy, head-in-the-clouds world of ambient-leaning, analogue deep house. This follow-up is every bit as enjoyable. There's a wonderfully spacey, loved-up feel about the intelligent techno electronics, tactile pads and hissing drum machine hits of 92 Spacedrum Orchestra's "Raw Bass (Dub 1)", while TV Out sneakily combines the new age haziness of Hashman Deejay, with the rolling grooves of Chez Damier style deep house on "Always Anyways". Hymn's "Route Acid" sounds like an unlikely jam session between Global Communication, Larry Heard and Psychik Warriors Ov Gaia, while TUC's sublime, ultra-deep "4x5_83x2" feels like a long lost, early '90s ambient techno masterpiece.

Signs Of Life (heavyweight vinyl 12")

Techno
  1. From Pillar To Post (7:17)
  2. Flight Out Of Time (7:34)
  3. Signs Of Life (6:45)
  4. Zenith (6:21)
Review: Escape Artist hasn't been around for very long, having only previously released one cassette, but the Melbourne artist is surrounded by like-minded talents from the land down-under, so he should have no problems in finding some well-earned spotlight. Out through Salt Mines, a Lobster Theremin deviation, these tunes are a powerful reinterpretation of past sounds and styles, this time focusing on the outer edges of grime and old-school d&b. Much like the sounds of peeps like Alix Perez, and other minimalist jungle fiends, "From Pillar To Post" glitches its drum rolls with a sleek, imperceptible touch, and the same goes for the more house-centric sway of the acidic "Flight Out Of Time". "Signs Of Life" is a killer deep house nugget with plenty of Chicago references, while "Zenith" heads back to the UK, recalling music from legends like Photek and LTJ Bukem. Top!

20092 EP (12")
Cat: SALT 003. Rel: 27 Oct 16
Deep House
  1. Dublate (6:22)
  2. Crawsto (7:44)
  3. O (5:02)
  4. Amalfi (4:13)
Review: Phlowgod's "Summer" was arguably the standout cut on Salt Mines' brilliant launch 12", so it's good to see him return to the Aussie imprint following a fine debut EP for Echovolt. He begins with two contrasting versions of "Dubplate". The first is fuzzy, wonky and out-there, smothering heavy bass, post-dubstep rhythms and drowsy chords in layers of dust and grime. While the second is similarly lo-fi in feel, it sees Phlowgood return to his usual deep house drums. Flipside "O" feels like the kind of off-kilter techno crustiness you'd hear on Lobster Theremin, while closer "Amalfi" is a hazy chunk of slo-mo deepness for those fragile, post-club moments.

Techno
  1. Rudolf C - "Indian Rope" (6:23)
  2. Rudolf C - "Granite State" (6:17)
  3. Shedbug - "Unwavering" (4:45)
  4. Shedbug - "Dust Off" (6:14)
Review: Following up DJ Barbo$$a's absolutely awesome Mystical Teachings EP, Melbourne's Salt Mines are back with yet more lo-fi house shenanigans courtesy of the label bosses: Shedbug and Rudolph C (Neo Violence/X-Kalay/Lost Palms). The latter serves up the tribal raindance of "Indian Rope"and the saturated acid house of "Granite State". On the flip, Shedbug (who had a great track on Polish imprint PLAY !T LOUD earlier this year) serves up some dirty rave breaks on "Unwavering" featuring a massive Reese bassline and... panpipes! It's not altogether unpleasant though, believe us. Less introspective and more dancefloor oriented on the hi-NRG antics of "Dust Off" though - a right epic and featuring some euphoric arpeggios, cosmic synth leads plus the best of vintage drum machines. This will truly elevate the crowd and just begs to be played somewhere like their local festival Rainbow Serpent this year!
