Teenage Music - "Looking For Bargain"
Forest Electrik - "Freedum"
Forest Electrik - "Circuiltry Haywire"
Review: Three years on from the release of the second installment of the Residue series, Joe Clausell has decided to bring it back. While the three tracks included are credited to two different artists, there's no doubt that it's Clausell at the controls. By his standard, all three cuts are pretty bold, wild and in your face, beginning with the retro-futurist, gospel house meets organ-heavy deep house of Teenage Music's superb "Looking For Bargain". Forest Electrik's "Freedum" [sic] is a surprisingly electronic, tech-tinged affair, and sees Clausell wrapping his usual African-influenced house grooves in springy bass, swirling electronics and intense synth solos. Those mental electronics come to the fore on "Circuitry Haywire", which sounds like someone having an epileptic fit while leaning on a synthesizer keyboard.

Review: Given his strong faith and decidedly cosmic approach to music, it's perhaps not that surprising that Joe Clausell's latest project is a mix of gospel music. What's perhaps most interesting about Praise 2 (In Praise of The Sun) is the variety of the material on offer. Gospel has long been a cornerstone of black American dance music, and Clausell wisely tries to tell the full story. So, while there are crackly early gospel recordings from the 1930s, gospel-funk from the '60s and all-acapella recordings, he also touches on disco, boogie, soulful house and 80s gospel soul. The result is a riotous mix that's as entertaining as it is righteous.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's latest full-length excursion is, in typical style, a little different from your average artistic full-length. Instead of showcasing the spiritual house maestro's completed productions, it instead offers glimpses of familiar favourites, B-sides and deep album cuts in various stages of completion. That may not sound appealing on paper, but it genuinely is. For starters, Clausell is a fine musician, and many of the showcased "manifestations" are effectively early, stripped-back takes laden with a mixture of fluid and jazzy piano solos, soulful vocals, spacey synthesizer chords and acoustic guitars. Some cuts are inspired ambient soundscapes, while others are breezier, lighter dancefloor numbers underpinned by a variety of African and Latin inspired deep house rhythms.

Review: Another new week means another selection from Joe Claussell's impossibly steamy and intense reworks. The super limited Manifestations: Long Versions EP 2 collects another three such tunes on one coloured vinyl. First is a dreamy and sun kissed tune from Mental Remedy that is all breathy vocals and noodling solos, then The Bayara Citizens offer a high speed salsa dance that transports you to the south of the Med and beyond. Another one from Mental Remedy cloys out with more afro rhythms and organic, wooden percussive sounds.

The Obeah Man (part 1) (5:19)
The Obeah Man (part 2) (2:56)
The Obeah Man Rhythm (3:23)
Review: On this surprise 7" edition of Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's unofficial Edits & Overdubs series of releases, the long-serving New York producer turns his attention to Exuma's 'The Obeah Man', a heavily percussive, Afro-fired slab of rhythm and blues/folk-rock fusion that was once an anthem at David Mancuso's Loft parties. Claussell's 'Part One' rework somehow seems even more urgent, percussive and life-affirming than Exuma's original version, and the 'Part 2' version - an unashamedly sweaty, drum-heavy interpretation - most certainly is. Possibly best of all - for plays in house sets, at least - is the 'Obeah Man Rhythm' version, which is a loopy, percussive beast. You may need to go for a little lie down after playing it - we did!

Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

Review: We should all be thankful that one of house music's true greats, the legendary Joe Claussell, continues to grace us with his personal treasure trove of edits. As someone who has lived and breathed seminal dance music through countless decades, his knowledge and sensitivity for the sound and culture is second to none. Having dropped a second compilation of his Unofficial Edits & Overdubs, he's now offering up the companion 7" which features two inspired treatments to get you popping, dipping and spinning. Discombobulated Wiring (5:18)
Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell launched the "Xperiments" series back in 2016 with a box set containing two single-sided flexi-discs and a seven-inch single, all of which contained some pretty spaced-out sounds. Four years on he's decided to offer-up a new instalment in the avant-garde project: a single-sided seven-inch presented in a special hand-made sleeve by artist Akemi Shimada. Interestingly, the featured track, "Discombobulated Wing", is far more club-ready than its predecessors, with Clausell layering krautrock-esque treated guitars and Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer parts atop a low-slung, restless bass guitar line and sparse house drums.

It All Began In The East (The Cosmic Arts Meditational mix) (3:18)
Review: Two years ago, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell donned his occasional Mental Remedy alias and offered up "A Journey To Noi", a decidedly spiritual album that mixed Japanese instrumentation with his usual ambient and deep house sounds. On this 12", Clausell offers up some heady new interpretations that - like much of his work over the last decade - are built around the percussive power of African rhythms. The opening "Sacred Rhythm Version" of "It All Began In The East" is particularly potent, with Clausell cloaking a warm, organic and percussive Afro-house beat in distinctive Japanese Koto melodies and jazzy piano flourishes. We'd also recommend the formidably heavy, drum-laden rework of "Dance For Gratitude", whose Latin American bassline and simmering synth-strings are almost as addictive as the weighty groove they sit upon.

Review: The third part of Joe Claussell's Joaquin Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series is as strong as the first two with four Special Extended Versions making for some joyous listening. "Tears Of Joy" is rapturous house music with gospel overtones that canto fail to bring the soul. "Al's Razerblade" is a lo-fi funk mash up with a strident rhythm section and "Morning" is golden soul with soaring strings that brings some 60s magic to the dance floor. "Life On Earth" is the steamiest of the lot, with tropical sounds and mad jazzy chords all laced with wild percussion that bristles with energy.

Review: If you're wondering what you'll find within the grooves of this vinyl double-pack from Joaquin "Joe" Claussell's Sacred Rhythm label, a cursory glance at the title should fill you in. As it states, what's on offer here is extended versions of some of the most popular unofficial "edits and overdubs" reworks. Of particular interest is his utterly insane 10-minute rub of Czeslaw Niemen's "Zi Listu Do M", a quirky chunk of experimental jazz that Claussell has magically re-imagined as a wonky, soft touch house track. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere, too, including a Balearic disco style take on Fleetwood Mac, a thumping revision of GB Experience's "Disco Extravaganza" and a wonderfully sweaty and percussive revision of The Impossible Dreamers' exotic "Life On Earth".

Afrofunkjazz (extended demo mix) (8:31)
Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's latest round of spiritual and percussive dancefloor workouts were apparently "randomly selected" from the vaults of DJ tools and work-in-progress tracks tucked away under the floorboards at Sacred Rhythm HQ. Naturally there's nothing genuinely "half-finished" here, just a quartet of cuts worthy of your attention. He begins with "Elegua", a West African style workout that boasts call-and-response group vocals and a loose, languid tribal rhythm track, before moving towards heavy Afro-house territory via the deep, dark analogue bass, machine beats and densely layered percussion of "Makussa PT Three". Over on side B, "Di Mayo" layers sharp, spacey synths and lashings of special effects to a dubbed-out Afro-house rhythm, while the gloriously colourful "Afrofunkjazz" lives up to its title.

Review: Some six years after releasing a limited-edition collection of reworks from his bulging archives, spiritual house maestro Joaquin "Joe" Clausell serves up a sequel. Broadly speaking, the New York-based producer's fine revisions fall into two camps: faithful and reverential re-edits with minimal additional instrumentation (see his ace edit of Methusalem's "Robotism", a spaced-out tweak of disco-boogie epic "Let Me Be The One" and the spiraling San Fran disco madness of "Hot, Hot (Give It All You Got)"), and house-focused hush-hush re-interpretations (the incessant sax loops, bustling bass, wild organ riffs and jacking beats of "Conversation" and more soulful flex of "You Just Can't Smile It Away"). More importantly, all are superb, club-focused revisions that sound like peak-time anthems in waiting.

Review: Originally released back in 2009 in its' epic 13-minute original form, "With More Love" remains one of Joaquin "Joe" Claussell's most endearing tracks - a gorgeous chunk of sun-kissed spiritual house rich in fluid piano solos, sunset-ready classical guitar solos, undulating bass, non-verbal vocal harmonies and the producer's bouncy Afro-Latin house beats. Happily, Clausell has decided to reissue the track, offering up two scaled-down versions that fit on one tidy seven-inch single. On the A-side you'll find the "Special 7" Edit", a six minute blast of ultra-positive dancefloor bliss that's about the most positive thing we've heard in ages. Turn to the flip for a previously unreleased instrumental take that strips the track back further, allowing the gorgeous piano solos and busy bass guitar more room to breathe.

Review: Given his interest in all things spiritual, it was little surprise when Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell launched the Praise series of gospel compilations back in 2013. Clausell's desire was not only to celebrate gospel as a vibrant musical form in its own right, but also to showcase its enduring influence on American dance music. This fourth edition in the series retains a similar focus, collecting together church-made recordings of choirs and soloists, studio recordings, and soul, funk, jazz, disco and house shot through with the righteous spirit of gospel. It makes for a heady, life-affirming mix and includes standout tracks from Pastor L.T Barrett, Peabo Bryson, The Main Ingredient, The Rance Allen Group and C&T, whose disco stomper "Get Ready For This" (track 13) is an absolute delight.

Review: Like many DJs with production nous, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell has always made re-edits and remixes to play in his sets. From time to time, he releases these on CD under the Unofficial Edits, Overdubs & Unreleased Remixes header. This fourth volume in the occasional series boasts plenty of gems reflective of the producer's influences and inspirations. So, while "Life Another" sees him deliver an extra-seductive version of a D'Angelo modern soul gem, the track that follows, "Fuego" is a superb Afro-house interpretation of a forgotten Osibida cut. Elsewhere, you'll find a thrusting, peak-time revision of Giorgio Moroder, a thrillingly spacey chunk of dub disco, and a couple of rock solid disco-era soul revisions.

Intentionally crafted as a piece that bridges the needs of both the music and dance communities to whom Claussell is mutually close, this is a suite divided into multiple sections that feed on one another; they appose elements of samba, jazz and house, with ambient interstices and even ruminative piano meltdowns ('Healer', 'Heloise'). This 12" boasts extended, club-friendly versions of tracks from that full-length, the impressive Makussa. Review: Last year, Joe Clausell delivered the first album from the Afro-centric Bolla project he begun way back in 2005, following it up with an essential 12" of extended, dancefloor-friendly revisions. Here, he delivers a follow-up EP along similar lines. There's naturally much to admire, starting with Clausell's own "Personal Boiler Room version" of the jaunty, saxophone-laden "Makusa". He takes a trip to the farthest reaches of the galaxy on "Basement Seance", whose sparse African rhythms and delay-laden vocals work magnificently with the track's decidedly spaced-out synths. "Downward Staircase" is a breezier, jazz-flecked Afro-house jam blessed with luscious Latin piano solos, while the Sacred Rhythm version of "Sangre" is a highly charged, uptempo romp through percussion-heavy, Afrobeat-influenced territory.

Since then, he's delivered a couple of coloured vinyl EPs featuring extended takes on these tracks. There's much to enjoy on this third (and likely final) chapter in the series. Review: While it initially started as a compilation and DJ mix series, Joe Claussell's gospel-focused Praise project has now spawned a string of EPs featuring rare tracks and new 'edits and overdubs' reworks by the Sacred Rhythm founder. The latest instalment begins with a wickedly percussive, predictably righteous live recording of a gospel slammer by Bishop Jeff Banks and the Revival Temple Mass Choir, which Claussell then turns into a 14-minute epic. He builds from a sparse, twinkling, piano-heavy start, before introducing weighty house drums and wild organ solos as the track progresses. Over on the flip it's all about 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves', a turn-of-the-80s gospel disco slammer which Claussell successfully extends (the 'Edits and Overdubs Main' mix) and then dubs out (the accompanying instrumental).

Review: If the rich history of US gospel soul, funk and disco gets your juices flowing, you need this new 12" from Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell in your life. As with many of the storied producer's edit-focused 12" singles, it has been pressed in limited quantities and should therefore be grabbed before all the copies disappear. On the A-side he offers up a tidy, dancefloor-focused tweak of Crowns of Glory's hard-to-find 1976 gospel soul cut "Lord, Look At Your People", brilliantly teasing out the intro before unleashing the song in all its inspiring righteousness. Over on the flip Clausell turns his attention to the Clavinet-heavy, Blaxploitation-era gospel disco anthem that is Keith Barrow's equally as inspired 1977 gem "A World Of Lonely People".

Review: Joe Claussell's mythical Sacred Rhythm has to be without a doubt one of the best and most reliable house labels around, and having a listen back through its catalogue immediately made us think that this dude was doing outsider house before the term house had even been coined - that's right, hear this! Residual Three is Joe stepping up under different monikers, first as Teenage Music with the loose, vocal-driven house amalgam that is "The Bargain", followed by "Freedum" on his Forest Elektrik name - a bouncy, synth-heavy dance experimentation - and a completely distorted, near beatless jam under the same name, entitled "Circuitry Haywire". Dopeness embodied.

Review: The undisputed master of spiritual house music Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell presents Cosmicdelic Afrika: a collection of demos that the New York City based visionary is currently working on in the studio. The idea for the compilation was inspired by the concept of his event Share: the upcoming Share Afrika will see Claussell digging through his archives and bringing out compositions exploring Afrika, African Diaspora, dub and more. Beginning with the deeply magical and meditative vibe of "African Drug" (Joaquin's Drugged Out Sketch mix) by Bob Holroyd, the soulful and uplifting deepness of "Emarofo Tech" (Joaquin's Demo Sketch Mix) by Mampo or Cosmic Ritual's "Abraxas" (Joaquin demo Sketch mix) which is classic Claussell - reminiscent of work on his seminal Language album from the turn of the millennium.

Review: Whereas the first volume in Joaquin "Joe" Claussell's "Cosmicdelic Africa" series focused on sneaky re-edits by the Sacred Rhythm founder, this second instalment focuses on original productions "for the dancefloor and the head". In other words, Clausell has offered up DJ-friendly extended versions of some of his most cosmic, Afro-centric creations. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the psychedelic rock guitar solos, restless bass, layered Latin house rhythms and rainforest sounds of Cosmic Ritual's "Abraxas (Demo Sketch Mix)", to the piano sporting cosmic house positivity of Mampo's "Emarofo Tech (Extended Sketch Mix)", via the spaced-out electronics, hallucinatory synth lines and sparse drums of intoxicating downtempo workout "Mundo De Agua (Psyxchdelic Transfusion Mix)".

Bolla Afrikan Basement Bo Bo A - "Drumistic" (version one) (4:04)
Review: Sacred Rhythm Music, mighty Joe Claussel's personal imprint, has always provided us with the finest and most provocative of house flavours. The label has been an inspiration to many, and producers such as DJ Sotofett have taken its model as a blueprint for their own labels, ones that bring together several different artists and ideas onto one 12". For this one, Claussel is joined by Mental Remedy and "I Pray No More", a guitar-led, mid-tempo house chugger, followed by the deeper than deep "Wail Of The Heart" by Unchained Rhythms. The man appears with a version of "Most Beautiful" by Elements Of Life on the flipside, a bouncy, happy house nugget, while Bolla Afrikan Basement Bo Bo A offer an intricate bundle of percussion on "Drumistic".

Review: For anyone with even the smallest interest in gospel music and its relationship with black American dance music, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "Praise" series of mix CDs should be essential listening. Volume six, subtitled "A Prayer For Peace, Love & Wisdom", is every bit as inspired as its predecessor, with Clausell moving between traditional choral gospel music, gospel soul, and soul-jazz, deep house and disco (including Crown Heights Affair's incredible "Say A Prayer") featuring suitably righteous lyrics. To tie the whole thing together, Clausell has also included a number of inspirational and thought-provoking spoken word samples taken from recordings of preachers and black community leaders. It's a brilliant touch.

Review: On his latest Sacred Rhythm compilation, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell says Thank You Universe, with a little help from his friends. According to the man himself, the collection was inspired by "a desperate need for World healing". Regardless of the New York producer's inspirations, what's delivered is an enjoyable set of global musical fusions that touches on jazz, Latin beats, African rhythms, downtempo grooves, ambient and, of course, decidedly cosmic deep house. Highlights include the blissful Afro-house loveliness of Clausell's own "With More Love", the jazzy, late night wonder of Clausell's remix of Kuniyuki Takahashi's "All These Things", and the smooth, late night deep house of Unchained Rhythms' "Wall Of The Heart".

Review: Joe Claussel has never been one to stand still. Even so, this must arguably be his most ambitious artistic project yet. Trembling Sensing Space started life as an art installation in Amsterdam, where Lidy Six and Katinka Marac's visuals came together with seven tracks composed by Claussel as a unique 'experience'. This CD/DVD package offers an in-depth retrospective, offering Claussel's colour-themed compositions - mostly beatless but occasionally blessed with a pulse, all presented in 5:1 surround sound - alongside a 40-page booklet explaining the creative process. The included DVD delves deeper, offering footage of the installation in action alongside 'making of' featurettes and such.
