Review: Earlier this year, Rush Hour announced the focus of their archival attentions would fall on Vincent Floyd, a producer with a small clutch of 12? releases in the mid-90s for Dance Mania, Relief and Gherkin Records offshoot Resound Records. Having reissued Floyd's 1990 Dance Mania release Your Eyes back in February, Amsterdam outpost Rush Hour return to the Chicago artist's canon of work with Moonlight Fantasy, a six track 12" filled with unreleased material. Sourced from Floyd's personal DAT tapes, Moonlight Fantasy focuses on his earliest productions and a time when his sumptuous sound was very much in the classic deep house mould of Larry Heard. House music historians will find this a most compelling document!

  9. Mappa Mundi - "Trance Fusion" (Hunee faster edit)
Review: You'd expect a compilation curated by open-minded DJ/producer Hunee to be eclectic in nature, and Hunchin' All Night is just that and more. Marketed simply as "a collection of his favourite dancefloor cuts from the '70s until modern time", the CD is packed with obscure and inspired jams in a variety of styles. Compare, for example, the gentle but tribal rhythms and new age synthesizers of Carlos Maria and Nuno Canavarro's "Blue Terra" with the glistening, mid-80s Balearic jazz-funk brilliance of Stanislas Tohon's "Owhaaou" (as re-edited by Dutch digger Raphael Top-Secret), or even the Clavinet-heavy Highlife brilliance of Pat Thomas's "Yesu San Bra Disco Hi Life". And that's before we get to the acid-flecked techno madness of Villa Abo and Hunee's wonderfully dreamy and dubbed-out pulse of Mappa Mundi's "Trance Fusion".

Review: Deep digging selector Hunee's critically acclaimed collection Hunchin' All Night Long enjoys a new vinyl edition with a selection of the myriad oddities, odysseys and stone cold classics he curated. If you know the album, you'll know just how good these picks are. Ranging from Larry Heard's recent hypnotic uplift "Burning 4 U" to the ambient cosmic stew of Mappa Mundi's star gazing "Trance Fusion" via the Mali soul funk of Boncana Maiga and beguiling Portuguese contemporary classical from Carlos Maria Trindade, this is a revealing slice of one of this year's best compilations so far.

  11. Richard Bone - "Alternate Music For The Hindenberg Lounge"
Review: Over the last few years, Interstellar Funk (real name Olf van Elden) has become one of the Netherlands most enthusiastic collectors of what he calls "wave music" - that hard-to-define, synthesiser-heavy style that first emerged at the turn-of-the-80s and has been evolving ever since. Artificial Dancers, his first compilation, continues this trend by gathering together personal favourites and rarities spanning 40 years of wave music. It's a brilliant collection, with highlights including the moody dancefloor brilliance of Clan Of Xymox's 'Stranger (Demo)', the Human League's exceedingly rare 1979 tribute to JG Ballard ('4JG'), a killer live recording of 'Dias Cortas' by EBM kings Liaisons Dangereuse and the Norwegian eccentricity of Det Gylne Triangel's wayward post-punk synth-pop classic 'Maskindans'.

Review: Amsterdam based producer Jordan 'GCZ' Czamanski wears many hats, whether as part of Juju & Jordash, Magic Mountain High or as part of Mulholland Free Clinic with David Moufang. He now makes his solo debut on Rush Hour with this awesome EP of neon treasures. From the funky old school techno vibe of "Pinball Lizzard" with its wayward melodies and cracking rhythms (on what the label best described themselves as 'a multi-ball dancefloor battle against the Grand Lizard') to the smooth neon-lit deepness of "Minor 7 Resin" - it's another terrific effort from a true hero of the underground.

Review: Get ready for a lost Japanese house classic from the rare Kino-Moderno album that was first put out in 1990. Of course, it comes from the ever on the ball Rush Hour team and features two tracks that were used on the Video Drug 2 video game back in the day. The whole collection brims with future soul, nicely defined kick drums and the sort of rich sound design details that characterise much Japanese house. Echoing greats like Dan Curtin, Soichi Terada or Harumi Hosono, these are classy and timeless cuts that cannot be sniffed at.

  1. Les Choc Stars Du Zaire - "Nakombe Nga" (4:26)
  2. Teknokrat's - "What Did She Say" (4:20)
Review: In recent times Rush Hour has excelled at reissuing obscure African music of the late 1980s, often pairing the original with a previously unheard cover version or remake. They're at it again here, offering up Les Choc Stars Du Zaire and Ben Nyamabo's 1989 cut "Nakombe Nga" with an obscure Belgian new beat cover by one album wonders Teknokrat's [sic]. Les Choc Stars Du Zaire's version is wonderfully positive, joining the dots between electronic soukous, ear-catching synth-pop and sunset-friendly Balearic vibes. The Teknokrat's version is, if anything, even more loved-up, with classic late '80s house instrumentation (Frankie Knuckles style synth-strings, jaunty pianos), ghostly electronic lead lines, delay-laden vocal passages and a superb synth bassline

Review: Rush Hour did us plenty of favours this year but by far our most cherished was the reissue of James Mason's timeless, proto-house excursions on the infamous "Nightgruv" EP. There's really not much to be said about these peerless productions, the original mix is a stunning voyage through glimmering synths backed by a chugging beat groove, but the unreleased longer edit is the one - voyaging through those gorgeous drums and piano keys like there's no tomorrow! "I Want Your Love" is another masterpiece - slo-mo hip-hop beats mixed in with those killer funk bass lines and the infamous vocals taking you to another dimension.

  2. Flashlight (Masalo remix) (8:11)
Review: For the 13th volume in their occasional "Store Jams" series, Amsterdam's Rush Hour crew has turned to Superior Elevation Records chief Tom Noble, a producer best known for his re-edits and remixes. "Flashlight" is not a cover of the famous Parliament/Funkadelic jam of the same name, but rather a similarly and colourful revivalist disco jam rich in low-slung grooves, flanged guitars and kaleidoscopic synth lines. Sometime Jamie 3:26 collaborator Masalo handles remix duties on side B, brilliantly re-imagining the track as a muscular slab of starry-eyed late night Italo-disco. Whisper it quietly, but it could well be even better than Noble's original version.

Review: Sassy J is a spellbinding selector, who imbues her sets with a relaxed kind of spirituality that you can jam to. As such she makes a wonderful choice to compile this new collection on Rush Hour, which travels through a rich tapestry of grooves from the tender and funky to the electrically charged and feisty. The cast of characters is huge, from 2000Black's magisterial broken beat to Nu Era's dazzling techno, Mr Fingers in an especially mellow mode and Georgina Ann Muldrow's captivating soul. Everything's bound together by effervescent musicality and a cool mood it's all too easy to sink into, like all the best Sassy J sets.

Review: Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it's another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson's "Born To Boogie", and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy's eccentric, synth-laden "The Funky 'G' (Only Comes At Night)", some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you'll find the thrilling funk of Explosion's "Wakka Mang", and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders' "Kaseko Attack".
