Review: Glenmore Brown aka 'The Rhythm Master' is credited as being the first producer to have ever credited King Tubby as an artist. This collection of tunes focusses on any unreleased dubs that have been found on previously lost tapes created by Brown and his friend and musical associate King Tubby back in the roots heyday of the 1970s. There's many a suburb rhythm here from 'Merry Up' to 'We All Have The Right To Live' via 'Never Too Young To Learn.' As well as being a fine producer, Genn could also play hand drums and melodicas well as provide occasional vocals, which can sometimes be heard here, while the mixing was all taken care of by, of course, Tubby himself.

Chemistry Of Love (3:58)
Chemistry Of Love (version) (3:59)
Review: Susan Cadogan's vocals are perfect for lovers' rock. She can go from real innocence to steamy sexuality in an instant and for that reason was quickly swooped up by Lee "Scratch" Perry back in the reggae heyday. On this one she's in a breezy mood, with soaring vocals and crystal clear delivery riding over a nice fresh rhythm. It is a modern reggae sound with digital production and bright synths over the rumbling drums and bass. The flip side version ups the island vibes with more sunshine, more playful percussion and vibes to spare.

Cassandra - "Happiness Togetherness" (3:39)
Tyrone David - "Tell Me Why" (4:00)
Review: The good folks at Rock A Shaka have long been encouraging us to slow down and sink into a softer way of life, at least that's what we assume from their continually excellent output. This latest downtempo delight is a split 7" featuring Cassandra and Tyrone David. The former's 'Happiness Togetherness' opens up with heart-aching and soul-melting vocals unfolding in graceful fashion over the the lover's rock rhythms below. Tyrone David then offers 'Tell Me Why' which has more great vocals with a more indie twist. The drums remain cuddly and persuasive.

Moving On (3:57)
Moving On (version) (4:03)
Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

Karen Dixon - "It's Love That Makes A Woman" (3:50)
Charisma - "Open Up The Door" (3:32)
Review: Karen Dixon and Charisma hail from the UK and are renowned for their blistering blends of roots reggae and lovers rock, all lent a modern production twist liable for soundsystem play. Two tracks feature on this latest one: 'It's Love That Makes A Woman', a cover of the soul classic by Barbara Acklin, sung by Karen Dixon with an ultra-swung reggae twist; and 'Soulful Strut', an instrumental version of the ubiquitous classic by Young-Holt Unlimited.

Sonia Ferguson - "Use To Be My Dread" (3:35)
Tyrone David - "Mind Blowing Decisions" (3:44)
Review: Jamaican singers Sonia Ferguson and Tyrone David recorded 'Use To Be My Dread' in the late 70s for producer Bunny Lee. A lovers' rock gem, Ferguson's vocals are rhythmically deft, and Bunny Lee's production is glitzy and dynamic, adding to its sense of serene and playful humour. The song concerns a former lover who has changed for the worse, though, despite this change, Ferguson regards this person as akin to a dreadlock, a permanent lock of hair and an enduring part of her being. Though it was originally released as a single on the Attack label, it has since become a sought-after collector's item, and so thoroughly deserves this reissue via Rock A Shaka.

Smile On My Face (2:54)
Smile On My Face (version) (2:55)
Review: Rock A Shaka comes thorough with more of the sort of sun-kissed and horizontal reggae sounds that have us dreaming of summer. This one finds Phil Francis working with The New Horizon Band on the heart-melting 'Smile On My Face'. It has fat, lazy drum wobbles with steamy trumpet motifs ringing out into a cloudless blue sky. Neat guitar riffs compliment the groove with a blue-eyed soul vocal up top and plenty of lovely lo-fi production finishing it in style. On the flip-side is a version without the vocal that still makes its way into your affections, but the vocal really is the one to beat.

Tony Hearne - "Without Your Love I'd Go Crazy" (4:10)
Blood Sisters - "What About Me" (3:26)
Review: Two star songs from the Jamaican reggae scene of the 1970s. Packed with an opulent jives, impassioned vocal performances and bright flutes, on the A-side comes 'Without Your Love I'd Go Crazy' by Tony Hearne, a soulful ballad, and an ode to the madness of lovelessness, with a light-footed rocksteady rhythm. The B-side is 'Ring My Bell' by Blood Sisters, a female vocal trio that covers the disco hit by Anita Ward with a roots reggae twist. Rock A Shaka do well on this reissue, topping up their specialism in reissuing rare and classic Jamaican music.

Falling In Love (3:56)
Falling In Love (version) (3:57)
Review: Emotional Rescue return to the work of Noel Williams as King Sporty. The Miami-based Jamaican made some seminal, stunning music that presaged the increasing importance of synthesisers in disco and dance music overall. This time the label have decided to give a regal airing to a cut previously only available squeezed onto the Deep Reggae Roots LP. "Safari" is a heady brew that keeps a necessary skank in the groove while channeling the nagging funk of The Meters and heading somewhere exotic. At just under four minutes, it's the kind of jam that warrants an extended treatment, and who better to do a respectful job than Lexx, who more than doubles the run time of the track on the B side.

Skin Tight (version) (3:43)
Review: Lloyd Charmer's 'Skin Tight' is a well-respected roots jam that first made its mark back in 1975. An OG copy of that first pressing will cost you a pretty penny these days as the Jamaican singer, keyboard player and producer's reputation has only grown over the years - no wonder when you put out some 19 albums and 147 singles and EPs. This one is a mid-tempo roller with laidback vocals packed with soul and natty organs dancing in the background. Well worth picking up.

The Melodians - "Sweet Rose" (2:46)
Prince Glen - "Hog In A Minty" (2:50)
Review: Rock A Shaka, hailing from Japan, go strong in their mission to reissue various reggae 45s. This one hears a revived new one from The Melodians, 'Sweet Rose', which previously only made it to some now very dusty old rocksteady 45's. Prince Glen's 'Hog In A Minty' - formerly 'Hog In Mintea' - meanwhile gets a downtrodden B-side pressing, with Glen singing mournfully of having nowhere to go. But with this release, he'll be crooning into the void no longer!

Lady Lady (3:38)
Loving Kind (3:58)
Review: This new 7" from the Far East is part of the Neville King Lovers Rock Revisited series. It's as smooth and heartfelt as roots reggae gets with One Blood and Simplicity really tapping into a loved-up vibe. 'Lady Lady' has meandering basslines and lazy horns unfurling next to the buttery sweet and tender vocals which muse on a dream girl. On the B-side is 'Loving Kind', a more traditional dub with tropical island vibes, subtle steel drums and this time a female vocal delivering a carefree lament.

Unique - "They Don't Stay Long" (3:33)
The Sadonians - "The Day Will Come" (3:28)
Review: There is not much better in this world than a super sweet roots tune with one of those vocals that makes your heart ache and yearn. And that is what we have here from Unique, who offers the gorgeous 'They Don't Stay Long' on the A-side of this new 45 from Japan's Rock-A Shaka. The drums are as lazy as you like, with meandering bass buried deep and loose guitar chords over echoing hits. The super sweet and carefree vocal is impossibly alluring up top and some steamy sax also comes in for extra romantic vibes. The Sadonians roll a little quicker with the more raw loops of 'The Day Will Come' but another super vocal finishes it in style.

Review: Based out of Naniwa-ku in Osaka, Japan, Rock A Shacka deals in rare reggae and dub from around the world. It has been doing so for 20 years and now comes another crucial compilation. Rocksteady People: JDI's Supreme 13 Hits comes with its own booklet and assembles a fine selection of ska and reggae classics all played by the cult Los Caballeros Orchestra. Plenty of vocalists lend their buttery tones to the say going to-and-fro rhythms, with big horn sections and a load of nice shiny brass.

Review: Japanese label Rock A Shacka's release of the Studio One compilation Pirates Choice II is a another well assembled one. Across 12 tracks all selected by Masaya Hayashi, the set is a rather long in the making continuation of 1981 released Pirates Choice by Studio One. It's packed with mostly rare tunes such as Al Campbell & FreddieMcGregor's 'Born A Freeman' and dub plate mixes of Freddie McGregor's 'Home Ward Bound'. A famous dub killer dub plate 'Instrumental' by the Brentford Rockers is also well worth owning. It all comes with extra context courtesy of liner notes written by Steve Barrow.

Review: Rock A Shacka have pulled together a classy compilation here which presents covers of classic soul, funk and disco given a smooth reggae re-rub. It's all silky and steady, as the likes of Barry White, The Ohio Players, McFadden & Whitehead and The Temptations all get the cover treatment from a varied cast of groups and players. The version of 'Skin Tight' is especially worth checking with its slick organ licks neatly re-positioning the seriously funky original. If you love reggae, funk or soul, you're going to find plenty to love about this one.

Review: Delroy Witter ran the Success Sound System out of Harlesden, North London, becoming one of the key figures in the UK's burgeoning reggae and lovers rock scenes. Pulled from his label D-Roy, this second volume of carefully curated classics get the fresh airing they deserve at a time when appreciation for the importance of lovers rock as a branch of reggae has never been stronger. There's ample sentimental, romantic jams contained within, but plenty of heavyweight riddims too, all remastered and presented with the Rock A Shaka attention to detail.
