Deep House
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Track 4
Review: After the success of the last outing on Rawax, A5 returns to throw down some more of that refined and thoroughly deep analogue house business. While there are plenty of pads and minor chord tones fussing around the EP, it's the punchiness that actually makes this record stand out. On "Track 2" there's a three-note bass line that comes in every four bars that pulls all those wispy elements to the floor with devastating accuracy, while on "Track 3" the whipcrack snares and claps that come firing in from jaunty angles perfectly spice up the direct arpeggios of what could otherwise be a standard deep house tune. "Track 4" raises the bar more overtly with a staggered groove of the most curious construction, but still manages to keep everything holding together, as wild drums and flapping synths get sharpened down to the point of an arrow.

Review: The Arabian Prince & The Sheiks is actually Kim Naze. He debuted on this label back in July with a reissue of an EP that dates back originally to 1985 on Rapsur Records. Now he is back with more of his rugged, proudly analogue electro goodness in the form of this scintillant and throwback single 'Situation Hot.' It first came in 1986 so bares all the loveable production hallmarks you would expect from that era - icy cowbells, jacked-up drums, serene chords and a beat to make you move your body in funky fashion. The original comes with an edit and instrumental.

First New Dance (11:54)
Undoing (11:12)
Review: Hot on the heels of his well-received EPs on Linear and Midi Records, Ionut Arapu returns to Rawax with two more top-quality tech-house cuts in his distinctive trademark style. On A-side 'First New Dance', the experienced Romanian producer peppers a rolling, bass-heavy groove with cut-up and layered vocal textures, deliciously wonky electronic lead lines, star-fall sounds and the kind of melodic elements more often associated with 1990s IDM. He opts for a deeper, more melancholic tone on 'Undoing', where emotive chords, dubbed-out electronic motifs and intergalactic synth sounds cluster around a sturdy, peak-time ready groove.

Review: Rawax drop another stunner of a reissue and it's by none other than Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart! The Milagro EP was originally released in 1994 on Our Choice as a CD and on London's Rough Trade as a 12". However, the German imprint has done us the favour of saving a L100 price tag on the black market, and have even remastered the tracks from the original tapes. Gorgeous, deep house swelters from start to finish, each track sounding as fresh today as it did over twenty years ago in a sweaty basement club. We're particularly fond of "Opcaity" and its cavernous bassline - a truly cutting-edge affair!

The Garden Of Secrets
Don't Bother
Synthetic Squyrs
Marching Ants
Review: Continuing his foray into 4/4 after his very recent turn on Futureboogie, this time Marco Bernadi has linked up with the Rawax crew for some more of that gutsy, full-bodied groove business. The synths on "The Garden Of Secrets" once again reveal Bernadi's electro roots, while the crisp and bumping beat stays slow and seductive. "Don't Bother" gets into a more twitchy frame of mind, opting for a more dystopian sci-fi kind of demeanour that leans towards techno drum patterns and interlocking melodies. Things remain decidedly freaky for the deadly "Synthetic Squyrs", albeit in a simmering under the surface fashion, and "Marching Ants" rounds things off with some dusty beat science and plenty of atmospherics.

Secret Surprise
Hidden Track
Review: Despite a sizeable armoury of material for some excellent labels over the years (Clone, Creme, Frustrated Funk, Abstract Forms) Scottish producer Marco Bernardi remains one of the unsung talents currently in operation. Perhaps being under the radar is what Bernardi prefers - it certainly grants him the artistic freedom to go wherever his creative impulses take him, and on this excellent debut release for the flourishing Rawax operation, it's two tracks of experimental if eminently rewarding fare. Lead track "Cyber" draws on themes of technological paranoia amidst a backdrop of dystopian electro characterised by distinct elements of sonic despair. In contrast "Secret Surprise" takes a more positive slant on the Detroitian electro sound, with sparse drum programming cascading around the spaces between the thick analogue bass line and incandescent synth lines.

Leo (6:01)

Robot Backpack (6:14)
Review: Cesare Vs Disorder aka Cesare Marchese joins the ever-growing Raw family with an EP that shows off his studio mastery across four varied cuts. 'All One' (feat Kevin Knapp) is a fleshy minimal house cut with silky rhythms and lots of machine funk. 'Leo' then flips the script with old school breaks and rave tinged vocals for spine-tingling peak time action. 'You & I' drops into a dark and garage-tinged house groove that shuffles and wiggles under well treated vocals. 'Robot Backpack' shuts down with maybe the best of the lot - cyborg electro funk with dry hits and irresistible bass.

Review: Kit Clayton isn't immediately associated to techno and minimal dance music, but the San Francisco resident has been on that wave since the late 1990s. While being relatively overlooked, the heads have always been aware of his contributions, and Germany's Rawax have masterfully reissued one of his rarer works, his debut album from 1999 entitled Nek Sanalet. Originally out on the scape imprint, the eight tunes are a wonderfully dense and dubbed-out blend of electronics and quasi beats. "Purpakana" is a perfect example of Clayton's way of moulding liquid-like modular sounds into more concrete shapes, whereas "Kalu" is a beautiful slice of broken, dubby abstraction. We're totally infused with the closing tune, "IInapiseptili", for its thick, luscious blur of dubwise sonics, and pseudo noise. It will fit well into your Chain Reaction of Rhythm & Sound collections; nuff said.

Review: Rawax's latest electro outing comes from one of the Godfathers of the Detroit electro scene, former Aux88 associate DJ Di'jital. Given his pedigree, it's no surprise to find that Final Frontier of Electro is pretty darn good. Across the six tracks he touches on numerous electro variants - ghetto-tech, Miami bass, the Kraftwerk-inspired early New York style and Drexciyan intensity - combining them into thrilling new hybrid shapes. It's rare to find an EP with this many high-grade club tracks, making picking highlights tricky. That said, we're particularly enjoying the thrusting, all out assault of "Injection Star" and the intergalactic, techno-influenced hustle of the forthright title track.

Review: REPRESS ALERT ** German label Rawax brings you a much deserved reissue of Woody McBride's seminal classic Low from 1995 under the DJ ESP alias, originally on Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. This ia a proper zeitgeist from the heady days of the Minneapolis underground scene: from the overdriven old school bounce of 'Idom', the typically Midwest minimal acid of 'Subtlediff' which ventured the same cerebral pathways as Richie Hawtin's Plastikman alias, to the strobed-out main room warehouse energy of '4:38' over on the flip which is followed by the heads-down stomp of '6:01'. It's classic Woody all the way on this one - essential!

Review: Rawax is back with more of that, well, raw wax, this time from the world of minimal and tech house. It's the newly emerging and catchily named EAST00155 who takes charge of this 19th label outing and does so with a fine grasp of economical but effective tech rhythm. 'Critical Schema' has pulsing basslines and shiny snares with a melodic lead that mystifies. 'Every1s The Same' is a cut that rocks back and forth on its heels with cool as you like grooves and 'Gorilla Glue' gets more percussive and textural with tripped out vocals. 'Topanga' shuts down with the smoothest groove of them all.

Review: Back in 2020, hip-hop, breaks and electro stalwart Freddy Fresh decided to turn his hand to vintage-sounding house and techno, self-releasing a set of tracks called The Harvest online. Rawax were impressed, with the popular label deciding to put the pick of the cuts out on vinyl. Title track 'The Harvest' sets the tone, with the veteran producer wrapping a house-tempo, post-electro groove in sustained organ chords, spacey synths and bubbly electronic melodies. 'House-Spanner' sees him doff a cap to The Middle of Nowhere-era Orbital (seriously, it's very reminiscent of the Hartnoll brothers' late '90s output), while 'Misunderstood' is a woozy, delay-laden chunk of early morning U.S deep house. Elsewhere, the deep house dreaminess continues on the interestingly swung 'Twain', and clonking, TB-303 speckled 'Horlywagon'.

He has a Turkish father, a Finnish mother and German citizenship so always brought a diverse array of influences to his music. Rawax now bring some of his classics back into focus by reissuing 1994's Flower Swing EP, which originally came on Dj.ungle Fever . It's high octane stuff with frazzled edges, restless analogue drums and plenty of searing acid flashes. For our money, the title track is the real standout.

Review: Jordan GCZ is having a hell of a year. He's already delivered two sublime albums (his debut solo set and one created in collaboration with Detroit legend Terrence Dixon) and here drops another must-check EP, his first for Rawax. 'Making Me Dizzy' sees the Amsterdam-based producer add gorgeously ambient lead lines, lilting TB-303 motifs and funky bass to a classic Motor City techno groove, with the accompanying 'Dub Mix providing a heavier, sweatier and more intoxicating alternative version. 'Tongue Twister' is jazzier and even more intergalactic, sitting somewhere between blissed-out Move D deep house and melodious techno. The dub that accompanies it is pleasingly deep, out there and effects-laden, escorting us even further into deep space. Tip!

Why So Serious (6:49)

Review: Since moving from Europe to Canada last year, Jordan Czamanski AKA Jordan GCZ has been relatively quiet, release wise, with just one solo EP and a collaborative album (Recreational Kraut, with long-time friend and studio buddy David Moufang) appearing. This return to Rawax, then, is a welcome development. Title track 'Polyphonic Glide's is particularly potent, with Czamanski combing tight, impactful drums with deeply spacey pads and chords, jazzy bass and his usual stoned, mind-mangling sound design. Elsewhere, 'Why So Serious' is a bouncy, hypnotic, acid-flecked box jam smothered in ghostly pads and echoing synth solos; 'Sunny Side Up' is snappy, out-there and intergalactic in equal measure; and 'Undercurrent' sits somewhere between Detroit tech-jazz, Reagenz style ambient techno and dubby deep house.

Review: Everyone's favourite wonky techno maestro may be in a more housey frame of mind these days, but he's no less disjointed and it makes for some of the rudest 4/4 throwdowns you're likely to hear all year. On this selection for Rawax you can hear the fun Landstrumm is having as the cheery wobble of "Touch My Swiss Cheese" belts out, while "Sweet Style" drops some of that bleep-era darkness into a steady beat with plenty of rave signifiers woven in. "The Wickerman" switches up for a snappy electro turn that calls to mind the recent Doubleheart ventures, proving that the Scottish champ isn't completely sworn over to slower tones.

Review: Rawax welcomes Lizz into the label fold here after two releases from Ricardo Villalobos. This time out the Romanian heavyweight makes an impressive debut with a pair of super elongated and adventurous minimal groovers. The first hurries you along on freaky sound spruces, with a mysterious bassline and plenty of unsettling details around each new corner. After that brilliantly far-reaching effort, 'Electrocity' layers broken vocal loops, detuned keys and plenty of kinetic energy into a track that is nimble and full of drama. Both will go down well with the heads at clubs that like their music well left of centre.

Congalese
Review: The latest Rawax release sees something a bit special, as the enigmatic Luv Jam are reacquainted with In Fields, the duo responsible for a remix on Luv Jam's killer Throne Of Blood release last summer. The results are still as groggy as you'd expect; "BRBP" is a brilliantly idiosyncratic mid-tempo chugger, whose pulsating wave oscillation seems to rev up and down like a purring muscle car, while "Forky" combines a skittish beat with rubbery cosmic movements. "Magical", meanwhile lives up to its name, with a off-key composition of dubbed out mechanical rhythms and misty analogue daubings, but its closer "Congalese" that really impresses with its low-slung yet throbbing bassline and sonorous chords that marry a sun-kissed mood with some serious dancefloor potential. If the current derivations in deep house are leaving you cold, this is a must check release.

Review: Germany's workhouse Rawax label is the sort of imprint that provides busy DJs with just the sort of tools they need to do their job. This latest drop veers away from the more traditional house it most often deals in to dip into sleek minimal territory. Giorgio Maulini is the man in control and 'Night Roads' is just like a nocturnal cruise down the motorway, with wispy neons flying past like headlights and a linear groove extending out below you like miles of tarmac. The rest of the EP remains just as heady and well-designed, with supple grooves and deft synths colouring in the small hours of the morning.

Review: Oh yes, Rawax casual Ricardo Miranda comes through with his latest EP for the German raw house label, and as you'd expect, it's four tracks of grizzly percussion stabs and warm low-ends. "Altered Feel" is an ode to much of Chicago Trax's output thanks to its deep, jacking tone, while "Deep Wax" is a little funkier and loungier in tone. On the flip, "Up On The Scene" goes for the old-school vibes, whereas its drum version draws more heavily on the percussion in what is a serious tool for the more adventurous of you DJ's. Dopeness guaranteed.

He makes his debut here on the Rawax Records label and as ever is in imperious form. This is the sixth edition in the label's RX Series and opens with the deep house jam that is 'Circle To The Square' with its fizzing lead synth. 'Sweet Heini' (feat Bouillabass) is a gurgling mix of sordid synth lines and dumpy drums that stay low and then comes the zoned out dub house cut 'Drone' which has been retouched for 2023. 'Ripples' is another dubby one for back room headiness.

Review: While there might be something no-nonsense about the tools MS has at their disposal for the latest Rawax emission, and there's certainly no nonsense to be found in the track titles ("Get Down 1, 2 and 3" respectively), there's actually a sophistication at work that belies the rugged Chicagoisms of the production values. "Get Down 1" especially bubbles and soothes with a dense bed of synths that call to mind the finest aqueous ambient tracks. "Get Down 2" is far more primal with its sparse drums n' bass refrain, while "Get Down 3" is equally direct albeit with a more angular funk to the beats.

This re-issued three-tracker for Rawax shows him doing just. A-side 'Off Message' sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. As such the German label reissues it now just as it was the first time around. The title cut is a tribal and chunky house number with thumping drums offset but tender and barely-there whispers. 'Sliders' is a twitchy technoid stomper with a sleazy vibe and the urgent, hurried grooves continue through 'Wraecca', this time overlaid with swirling solar winds and busy synth modulations. Proper tackle.

This was their only release at the turn of the millennium, on Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic imprint, reissued here on Frankfurt's Rawax. This one kicks off with the silky and seductive, bendy and elastic neon synth sounds of 'Lost Language' which has rock solid drums bringing the drive. Review: There's a delicious simplicity to the concept behind Rawax's Aira series, which involves much-lauded producers creating new tracks entirely using Roland's retro-futurist equipment series of the same name. Given Ron Trent's association with the machines the series was inspired by - TR-909, TB-303 etc. - he was clearly an obvious choice to get involved. As usual, he's conjured up some classically melodious, evocative and emotion-rich material. "Deep In The Stars" sees him in late '80s/early '90s deep house mode, with twittering melodies and ocean-deep pads wrapping themselves around a decidedly tactile groove. "Rock The Box" is typically expansive, with robotic vocals and a whisper of electro amongst the sweeping chords and intricate synthesizer motifs.

"Mansi Song" places a simple phased bassline and undulating textures in an echo chamber environment, keeping its kicks low in the mix, while "Deepfrozen Soil" takes an even more sedate approach, as a simple kick drifts through a glacier of weeping pads. On the flip, "Low Freq Vibes" offers a similarly placid take on house, but its "Dub Layer" that impresses most, containing some particularly Basic Channel-inspired textures, as malleable chords bounce around inside an increasingly narrow confine.

Neunachi (13:10)
Detrant (12:54)
Review: By now, we should know what to expect from Chilean minimalist Ricardo Villalobos, namely eccentric, off-kilter rhythms subtly influenced by his south American heritage, smooth but impactful bass, a smattering of weird electronic noises and mangled vocal samples pulled from the depths of an imagined K-hole. You get that in spades on 'Neunachi', the 13-minute lead cut from his latest Rawax double-header. It's classic Villalobos with a nightmarish twist - all backwards vocal samples, brain-melting rhythmic elements and subtle shifts of sonic emphasis. Flipside 'Detrant' is no less odd, though the skittish machine beats underpinning the collage of South American samples and wayward noises is pretty sturdy and straightforward. Of course, the track itself is anything but straightforward, but that's always been a big part of Villalobos's early morning allure.

Minimal/Tech House
Neunachi (13:14)
Detrant (12:55)
Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

Ricardo Villalobos - "Rabbit Over" (12:15)
Oskar Szafraniec - "Vitality" (feat Infinite Livez) (8:51)
Review: Germany's Rawax, aside from its reissue offshoot, has usually released up and coming artists in the house and techno domains but the label are back with something pretty special for the first chapter of their newly crowned Aira series. Ricardo Villalobos, a man who needs no introduction in the minimal techno game and who sells clubs out week in and week out all over the world, drops "Rabbit Over", a familiarly itchy Villalobos groove with intricate melodic patterns and a driving beat structure. On the flip, Oskar Szafraniec's "Vitality" is similarly stripped and jagged around the edges, a monstrous bassline dominating its bottom-end. Another fine slice of Rawax and an impressive evolution from the label!

Review: Frankfurt's Rawax return with Wave Particle Singularity, the alias of artist Selim Bouziri who is based in nearby Mannheim. His hometown has a long tradition of tech house, being home to scene veterans such as Nekes, Christian Burkhardt and Federico Molinari to name but a few. Bouziri respectfully follows in this tradition on Theories & Fundamentals: Part 1, featuring such jams as 'Photoelectric' with its minimalist retro shuffle, or feel the power of the bass-driven roller 'Measurements' (feat Adnan) and the swing-fuelled alien funk of 'Theory Of Love'.
