  5. Black Alley Shuffle (4:34)
Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of B side cut "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

  1. 20 Million Of The Planet (4:47)
  2. Detroit 9 (4:19)
  3. And We Vibe (5:19)
  4. In My Soul (5:15)
Review: More works by Brian "Javonntte" Garrett offered up here by Quintessentials, following up his How Is Club246 EP for the imprint earlier this year. For the uninitiated, the Detroit native has worked with local legends such as Andres and Amp Fiddler, in addition to touring as a dancer for the legendary Aretha Franklin back in the day. The Private Party EP nails that classic Motor City house vibe - soulful, understated and deeply emotive. From the moody and hypnotic opener "20 Million Of The Planet", dusted down and smoothly executed mood lighting as heard on "Detroit 9" to the life-affirming moments of truth as heard on "In My Soul" that's just perfect for solitary dancing.

  2. Mind (5:34)
  3. Vice (8:33)
  4. Onions (feat Mark Hand) (7:10)
Review: Andrew Scott has been fairly quiet in recent years since he released "Grasscutter" with Ian Blevins on Saft, but after his comeback on Local Talk last year he's keeping the NY*AK project alive this time round on Quintessentials with four cuts of sublime deep house. The shadowy British producer goes for sexy and slow-mo grooves on "After The Sun" (feat Franc Syx), before returning to disco on the sunny and uplifting "Mind". On the flip, he saves the best for last with the lo-slung boogie down vibe of "Onions" (feat Mark Hand).

  7. 4004 - "Continous Dialogue" (5:40)
  8. Loz Goddard - "Leaves" (6:20)
Review: To celebrate a decade in the deep house game, Quintessentials has put together an eight-track set of unheard exclusives stretched across two DJ-friendly slabs of wax. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the sun-bright swing of Borrowed Identity's UK garage-meets-deep house workout "For You" and the wonderfully atmospheric, synth-heavy chug of Ooft!'s "Freak-E Groove", to the foreboding, jazz-funk-sampling hustle of S3A's "Searching" and lilting, late night jazz-house bliss of Loz Goddard's album highlight "Leaves". Other highlights include the drowsy chords and bumpin' beats of KRL's "Baltimore" and the low-slung, gospel-influenced deep house pump of 4004's "Continuous Dialogue".
