Review: Jerry "J" Johnson's California Flight Project outfit were relatively unknown during the 1980s, and it took a series of self-released CDRs and a 2010 single on People's Potential Unlimited for the Bay Area act to finally hit the big time. This eponymous album on Norway's Preservation Records picks up the story, gathering together a slew of superb West Coast funk and soul gems recorded by the outfit between 1979 and '81. This is the first time most of them have been released on wax, and they're genuinely worth a listen. Check, for example, "Dance On It", where Johnson urges us all to dance over a laidback, synth-laden boogie groove, the rubbery slap bass and sparkling pianos of "Do You Feel My Love" and the proto-San Francisco synth funk of killer album opener "California Flight".

I've Got The Feelin'
  1. I've Got The Feelin' (3:45)
  2. Caves Of Altamira (3:20)
Review: The James Walsh Gypsy Band is kind of the outfit to go to if you're looking for some blue-eyed soul but, just like Ned Doheny and his sublime reissue on Numero, the band never fully came out of its shell, and were limited to just one album on RCA Victor, 1998's self-tiled LP. I've Got The Feelin' was recorded a year later, in 1979, at the legendary Muscle Shoal Studios, but it never made it out onto the shelves apart from a seriously limited CDR run. Norway's Preservation has thankfully done the right thing by pressing its two best singles on 7". The lead tune, "I've Got The Feelin" is a graceful, soul-driven disco bomb guided by James Walsh's memorable vocal chorus - a true LA kind of beast - while "Caves Of Altamira" is more sensual in its approach, but Walsh's inimitable voice still rides proudly at the centre of the mix. Two killer soul slingers - TIP!

Just Cause I'm Guilty
Cat: P 021. Rel: 01 Feb 18
  1. Just Cause I'm Guilty (4:08)
  2. Can't Stop A Man In Love (4:11)
Review: Previously spotted on Preservation asking us to bend a little, Terry Woodford and Clayton Ivey's Mirage reappear on the Norwegian label. The deliciously bluesy talk box-flexing "Just Cause I'm Guilty" was covered by Hot in in 76 (and was actually produced by Woodford) while the silkier, groove-based Motown-styled soul romp "Can't Stop A Man In Love" was previously covered by Carl Carlton and Reuben Howell in 74 and 73 respectfully. Both recorded by Mirage at the time but never released, Preservation once again live up to their name in true style. Stunning.
