Review: We do love a good back story, and Rendlesham has one of the best we've read in some time. The record is pegged as "an electronic instrumental album soundtracking arguably Britain's most remarkable UFO event", a description destined to win hearts and minds for its ability to capture the imagination while throwing in a disclaimer, in true Brit style, just in case anyone had experienced a more remarkable UFO event than the one that took place late on Christmas Day night and the early hours of Boxing Day, when an army sergeant received a binary code from a "craft of unknown origin".

Skip forward 42 years and what does that sound like? Well, imagine the introduction to a VHS release by Viacom, combined with a little Close Encounters, some Geiger counter noises, and a lot of stretched arpeggiated refrains. Then double all that and make it sound even more like a personal encounter with what may or may not have been a thing from another world. Got it? Well, that's almost what's here.

Review: Not to be confused with Alexandre Bazin, the Scottish philosopher, psychologist, logician and educational reformist who founded Mind, the world's first journal of analytical philosophy and psychology, this Alexandre Bazin - member of Parisian collective GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) - returns to Polytechnic Youth to follow up 2017's Sun Dog Trail LP. And by that we mean another record of deeply textured soundscapes moulded using analogue synthesisers.

Utilising, among other things, an EMS Synthi, Buchla Music Easel, Prophet and Moog, as you would expect this creates a vast feeling and wild variety of timbre. At times things feel rooted in classic rock 'n' roll sensibilities - 'Red Ochre', for example. In other moments we're closer to Can territory ('Dubes'), while the highest sonic peaks are arguably at similar altitude to bands like Explosions In The Sky ('It Comes In Waves'). Definitely not a record you'll forget in a hurry.

Review: It's pretty easy to jump to conclusions, or at least make assumptions, when words like "nihilist existentialists" are applied to synth acts based in Neukolln, one of Berlin's most desirable non-conformist neighbourhoods. And what's here certainly sounds like it fits that setting - uptempo and highly accessible on the surface, but with dark, unnerving nuances. Electro pop with BDSM tendencies, perhaps. If that doesn't sound like your kind of thing, perhaps this may change your mind: The Detox Twins' latest is tight on production and heavy on the compelling, commanding and inescapable. The result meaning that after about two minutes of "Warschauerstrasse" you're likely to be locked in for the full album. Highlights including, but not limited to, the hypnotic bumbler "Einhorn Suicide" and the unsettlingly moody "In The Hospital Garden", although everything here is top quality eccentric party stuff.

Review: North London minimal synth label Polytechnic Youth looks to Brooklyn for their latest release with The Botanist & The Archaeologist, a collection of imaginary '80s film and vintage horror scores from Faten Kanaan. Some twelve tracks long, Kanaan's mastery of vintage synths is there to behold from the moment the epic "Viriditas" swoops into action, but there is also a real depth on display here too. Witness the spectral harmonies and soft focus chimes of "Spy Films" or the instrumental organ drift of "Coryphee." If you are sick of people banging on about the Stranger Things soundtrack, lay this tremendous album on their figurative doorstep and watch as their senses open to some truly wonderful synth music.

Review: As part of the 2016 Ghent Film Festival, the first ever 'greatest hits' album for Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack work was released. This retrospective LP compiles the best selections from the entirety of his career, from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence to The Revenant. Now reissued 5 years later by Silva Screen, the album sees a wider, exclusive white vinyl edition, capturing the swelling pangs endemic to Sakamoto's music for screen.

Review: Israeli analogue synthesizer fetishists Group Modular could hardly be described as prolific, but the music they have released is rarely less than inspired. Time Masters, their long-promised second album (the first appeared eight years ago), builds on their undeniably intergalactic blueprint, offering a retro-futurist take on otherworldly electronic funk that combines modular synthesizer motifs and alien-sounding electronic textures with nods to 1970s krautrock, jazz, post-punk and obscure B-movie horror film soundtracks. It's an arresting and surprisingly loose-limbed concoction, with highlights including the Pierre Henry-esque 'The Big Hunt', the cacophonous and intense 'Ignition', the Stereolab-on-speed flex of 'Chatterbird' and the low-slung creepiness of 'Black Sphere'.

Review: Since debuting on the label back in 2014, The Home Current's Martin Holm has become one of Polytechnic Youth's most reliable artists. It's perhaps for this reason that the imprint is enthusiastically releasing his long-awaited debut album. Another Way of Falling Apart is moody, atmospheric and often melancholic, delivering a range of ear-catching compositions that veer from clandestine, Autechre-influenced synth-pop and pitch-black ambient, to post-industrial sludge-pop (see the gritty-but-sparkling "The Devil Finds Things For Idle Hands To Dwell On"), symphonic synthesizer soundscapes ("You Were Right About The Stars") and deep space acid ("Cloud Visitors"). On occasions, such as the foreboding and out-there closer "Rooftop Nights", he also pushes the experimental envelope further than you'd expect. Excellent stuff, all told.

Review: Luxembourg based, Danish DJ and musician Martin Jensen is very productive, just as creative and always on point. This latest album may be his best yet however. It's a collation of music he said he has made specifically with this label in mind and is inspired by a love of private pressing electronic LPs from the '70s. "I wanted to create something immediate, sparse and functional," he says, and he has done just that across the eight immersive tunes. They are chilly yet absorbing, with icy synths and cold wave sounds stretching out over a range of rhythms - some sooth and seductive, some more wonky and manic.

Review: Formerly known as Aerie, David Gate and Robert Andrews formed The Land Of Yrx in Shrewsbury in 1982, and were unquestionably light years ahead of their time. Apart from anything else, some of what we have here might be labelled chip music, owing much to video game soundtracks, the only problem being video games at that point didn't actually have soundtracks per se.

The pair would put out a slew of tapes between 1983 and 1993, before moving to self-released CD-Rs. This vinyl release compiles work from across that history and makes it clear more people should be aware of their efforts. Tacks like 'Annus Mirabilis 1984', for example, are staggeringly beautiful and inventive, 'And Damn The Consequences' could be proto-acid house, while 'The Crucial Suss Composition' is a blend of ambient drone resplendent with this subtly spiralling and emotive electronic symphony.

Review: Packing shades of formative era Cabaret Voltaire, Neural Circus, and Fad Gadget, among others, the opening, title track to Le Cliche's latest long form is everything you want in cold synth wave. It's fun and packed with the energy of a factory floor, but at the same time saturated in a kind of sinister broodiness, never fully committing to the party it will so clearly set off. Elsewhere things get more exploratory still. 'Thin White Sheets' is a downtempo menace, 'Francophilia' is broken electro sex at its finest and most-loin-arousing, 'All This Silence' is all about muted waves of harmony and a big room feeling. 'Tara It's Getting Late' feels like we're approaching the chaotic culmination of a dance floor session. Make no mistake, this is benchmark for the genre.

Review: Retro futurism would be one way to describe Cybernetic Window, and indeed Listening Center in general. Opting to approach the notions of the years ahead with a subtle Utopianism, rather than the more frequent and, given the state of the world now, believable dystopian tones, it's a glittering work of beauty born entirely of mechanics but still allowed to soar when it spreads its wings. Which is pretty much on most tracks.

Call it electro, call it synth fantasy, this limited pressing is deep but also dance floor, it's strange and otherworldly but feels like it's been in your collection for aeons - the last remnants of an advanced civilisation scattered to the wind. A wonderfully strange and melodic trip into a broken beat dream, the only question really is whether you want to wake up or not.

Review: UK artist Middex pays tribute to early synthwave pioneers such as Suicide and Cabaret Voltaire on his debut album for primitive electronics purveyors Polytechnic Youth. Not much is known about the shadowy producer at this stage, but as a recent event flyer so succinctly stated 'this is outer space hidden in the outer boroughs, plastered over the flat thump of frosted Perspex hearts'. From the rusty minimal synth of "Low Life" (featuring his deadpan Cockney vocals), the conjuring of ghosts in the analogue machines on "Nightime Accountancy" or "Sub Surface" respectively, or the violent oscillations of "Conversation" that support his fierce poetry - this is the kind of album that Regis or Silent Servant could have well made, once upon a time.

Review: Polytechnic Youth kicks off the year with a superb new MITRA MITRA full length album, their first since the brillaint 2018 album Marionettes, also on this label. The Vienna bad formed towards the back end of 2014 and since then Violet Candide and Mahk Rumbae have gone on to great things. Candide hails from New Zealand and has long been immersed in the post-punk and minimal synth scene as both a DJ and more battery a producer. Rumbae is a Brit who has been part of bands like Konstruktivists. This new record heads in a darker direction than before and is all the more alluring for it.

Review: Having emerged from the undergrowth via a swathe of tape releases on Field Hymns, Wayne Longer's (aka Adderall Canyonly) Oxykitten alias has gone on to become a celebrated darling of the contemporary minimal wave scene, and it's not hard to hear why. This release on Polytechnic Youth is Oxykitten's first outing on vinyl, but it originally came out digitally back in 2018. It's highly deserving of a physical edition - not least for the vibrant sleeve which accurately captures the vibe of the music inside. This is technicolour electronics - all day-glo synth lines skipping in unison around the same twee toy town of Longer's imagination. It's subtly quirky to keep things interesting, but primarily harmonious and utterly infectious in its upbeat demeanour - stick this on for a serious dose of synthetic sunshine.

Review: Big week for Polytechnic Youth, with a new one by Hologram Teen as well as this full length by Preston-based modular synthesis explorer Stephen James Buckley aka Polypores. He presents more sonic sculptures on his fourth album for the label. Taking influence from ambient, new age and experimental electronics, Buckley creates a dozen dream environments on Chaos Blooms: 'The Computer' sounds like a cross between BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Boards Of Canada, 'Destroyer' explores the beauty in chaos using randomly generated voltages, while the wonky offworld improv stylings of 'Machine Jazz' are much like the name suggests. Towards the end 'Moontangle' was a definite highlight, this one is a bittersweet and all immersive ambient drone epic.

Review: Cult artist Colin Potter has been serving up superb albums for decades, with each year bringing a new clutch of solo or collaborative excursions. "Here", the veteran experimentalist's first outing for Poytechnic Youth, is another must-check affair. This time he's in a dark and intoxicating mood, offering up atmospheric soundscapes rich in woozy modular electronics, fuzzy guitar solos, metronomic post-punk bass, unsettling ambient chords, horror soundtrack aesthetics and off-kilter, delay-laden drums. It reminded us a little of early Joy Division, Chris Watson-era Cabaret Voltaire and other DIY-era experimentalists, though there's little doubt that it's a Colin Potter record.

Review: Deep Distance's relationship with Jonas Reinhardt feels like a match made in heaven, a wave of cold synths that filter down ever so well with the rest of this shining, ever-surprising catalogue. Conclave Surge is a behemoth of an LP, travelling at a sub-zero pace thanks to mounds of chilling synthesizer sounds wrapped under a warm coating of analogue fuzz. Like a story, or far-reaching voyage, this album develops and unfolds, slowing and speeding up with each new turn of the page. There's a palpable aura at its core, and it only gets better as new sounds enter the forbidden palace that is Reinhardt's creative guise. Wonderful.
