Conte
Conte (clear vinyl LP limited to 100 copies)
Cat: PSR 049. Rel: 14 Aug 20
Ambient/Drone
  1. Depart (3:01)
  2. Conte (4:48)
  3. Reflection (7:02)
  4. Repeat (2:25)
  5. Modular (4:06)
  6. Centre (5:35)
  7. Partial (3:29)
Review: Sublime synth and guitar compositions from Echolog on this 7 track LP. I was first introduced to Otto's work via his Conversions tape on Constellation Tatsu, and on Conte he has created something really striking and unique. Each piece is filled with movement and melody beginning with the synth pulses of "Depart" and "Conte" to the slow motion ambient swells of "Reflection" and "Centre".

  6. Deviation & Dispersion (3:37)
  7. Midway (5:15)
  8. Red & Black (3:45)
  9. Resuscitation (5:10)
  10. Nobody Wants To Leave (3:46)
Review: Ross Gentry makes an impressive debut on the Polar Seas label with an album of ambient inspired by " inspired by two monumental works of modern fiction, Tom Perrotta's 'The Leftovers' and Don Dellilo's 'White Noise'." As such, the music explores human tensions and existential dread, with ominous dories layered over creeping found sounds. Shards of synth light break through the cloud atmospheres to bring light relief on 'Nobody Wants to be Here' while the edgy string sounds (performed by Emmalee Hunnicutt), lo-fi crackle and sustained pads of 'Midway' keep you in a state of unease throughout. This is a beautiful troubled album for similarly troubling times.

Saturnalia (clear vinyl LP + MP3 download code limited to 100 copies)
Cat: PSR 055. Rel: 10 Sep 21
Ambient/Drone
  1. Clouds (2:23)
  2. Silverine (18:26)
  3. Saturnalia (5:29)
  4. Waters (13:21)
Review: Polar Seas is very excited to welcome kj to the label with this 4 song LP "saturnalia". I've loved his music since I first heard his album "wake" on Own Records, and he has released some lovely music on Lost Tribe Sound, Dronarivm and Gailur Records. On his fifth full length release, kj departs from the hypnotic refrains of his earlier work in favour of the limitless expanses and mysteries of the cosmos, particularly exemplified by the ebb and flow of the 19 minute track "silverine" and the gorgeous orchestral closing track "waters".

Review: This is the first North Atlantic Drift release on vinyl, and the first album the duo have recorded remotely (between Toronto and Walkerton, Ontario). Pillars consists of 9 pieces for guitar, synthesizers, strings and samples and brings subtle changes to the minimal ambience of the Departures Vol. 1 and 2 albums released on Polar Seas and Sound in Silence.

  7. Matter (9:02)
  8. Last (4:41)
Review: Rosales follow-up their debut for the Archives label 'Still, Tomorrow' with 'Woven Songs'. Written between 2019 and 2020 (prior to their debut album) this collaboration between Ian Hawgood and Brad Deschamps is a joint release on Home Normal and Polar Seas Recordings, featuring stunning artwork by Laura Kay Keeling. This new long-form work was sourced from guitar and synth loops and processed by Space Echo, cassette and reel-to-reel for decayed textures. The result is music that develops carefully, only to slowly fragment in the whir of the analog machines, all culminating in the dynamic penultimate piece 'matter'. 'Woven Songs' is available on limited LP and digital.

Carolina
Carolina (transparent green vinyl LP limited to 100 copies)
Cat: PSR 46LPG. Rel: 25 Feb 20
Ambient/Drone
  1. Gaffney Fields (7:37)
  2. Chesnee Rivulet (8:45)
  3. Woodland Aurora (8:48)
  4. Meadow Twilight (7:11)
Review: According to the artist himself, Zake's first solo album of 2020 was recorded and produced during "a four-day excursion in several secluded areas" in South Carolina. As a result, listeners can expect to hear babbling brooks, birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves beneath Zake's alluring mixture of enveloping ambient chords, unearthly drone tones, opaque electronics and slowly-shifting, heavily processed neo-classical movements. The results are hugely immersive and undeniably enjoyable, with each of the four tracks delivering a head-in-the-clouds journey that ripples with becalmed, atmospheric intent. In other words, it's the kind of ambient music you can get lost in. More please!
