Draw The Line
Line Drawn
Review: Pleasure Unit is doing a damn fine job building up a catalogue of discoid deviance from the likes of Skatebard, Lunar Concept and Loose Change, and now it's the turn of debutant project Field Of Dreams to lay down some 80s-tinged grooves for the smoother kind of dancefloor. "Pourquoi" features Queenie, and it shows off the individual heritage the two producers in Field Of Dreams have (one was in 90s chart toppers D:ream no less), all plush chords and slinky grooves with an alluring French vocal thread coursing through the middle. "Draw The Line" is a more synth-rich affair that leans towards the moodier end of acid-tinged disco, and then "Line Drawn" drifts out into Balearic boogie of a dubby nature, providing plenty of variation for the warm up or melt down dancefloor.

Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997
Jungle Mantra
Review: Russian producer Kirill Sergeev has been setting light to the likes of Hell Yeah, Bordello A Parigi and Bahnsteig 23 in the past under his Kito Jempere alias, and now it's the turn of Pleasure Unit to get his unique treatment. "House Track" may seem like an innocuous title but don't be fooled, it's far from a conventional house jam. Loose, 80s tinted production vibes abound across the record, not least with the party heaters on the A side. "Never Been To Ibiza Beaches 1997" is a more laid back jam, but still sizzling with inventive energy, and "Jungle Mantra" explores tribal percussion with a fresh slant that will call out to the tropical spinners.

Early feedback on Les Crocodiles has been great and we are currently waiting on a remix from one of our fav Scandi producers who offered a mix on hearing a rough draft.

Love Talk
Review: Following excellent releases from Skatebard, Les Crocodiles and Lunar Concept amongst many others, Pleasure Unit turn to Cut The Rug crew member Mike Misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. "Do What You Need" sports a Metro Area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. The dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is B2 jam "Love Talk". With its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it's an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

Review: Release number 4 for Pleasure unit, see's the debut release from Lunar Concept Edgar Moon and nephew Junior. A wonky slice of stringy afro House backed with two remixes, one from label mates Les Crocodiles taking it on a slow trip up river.

Downtown
Tempelhof Kite
Tempelhof Kite (Kito Jempere remix)
Review: Hailing from Lithuanian capital Vilnius, Miskotom appears on Pleasure Unit for a debut appearance that should appeal to all lovers of delicate, pop flecked house with a smooth 80s veneer. The production is perfect for the mood of the music, with the dusty groove of the title track embellished with Eastern flute motifs and Larry Heard chords of the sweetest melancholy. "Downtown" meanwhile revels in slap bass finery, and "Tempelhof Kite" gets a rubbery Moog tone in the low end that offsets the woozy pads beautifully. Kito Jempere comes on board for a remix that dubs "Tempelhof Kite" down into a warm and sexy house cut of the highest order.

Jacaranda Skies (7:57)
The Lost Garden (6:12)
Mangrove Dawn (7:48)
Skies Reprise (6:38)
Review: Joe Morris is back in action on Jacaranda Skies 8.02, exploring more of that balmy sound that Pleasure Unit love so dearly when having a good time down by the marina. This is how yacht rock would sound if it had got with the party program, not least on the illustrious "Jacaranda Skies". "The Lost Garden" is a more mysterious affair that trades in immersive atmospherics with a distinctly soundtracky feel. "Mangrove Dawn" is a sleepy affair that wraps around you like a perfectly timed silken scarf, and then "Skies Reprise" lets Morris sail back into those bountiful waters that gave us the lead track.

It Goes On & On (The Baseline)
Pingu
Review: Following his appearance (albeit in remixed form) on the debut 12" from Keyboard Masher's Pleasure Unit imprint, Norwegian eccentric Skatebard is given the honour of releasing the label's second EP. Apparently all three tracks are vintage cuts from the archive, previously unheard but original recorded straight to tape in his home studio. There's naturally much to enjoy, beginning with the Scandolearic-goes-rave synth-house madness of "React 2 Rhythm" - all urgent, swirling beats, epic synthesizer melodies and mid-'90s US garage influences. There's more surging, nu-disco goes-house fare to be found on "It Goes On & On (The Bassline)", while "Pingu" is a joyous chunk of chugging Scandolearica blessed with tactile shaker percussion and a jaunty, rock solid synth bassline.

Skatebard - "Confirmation Bias" (Telephones rework)
Love Nation - "Everybody 4 Love" (Telephones version)
Dove Station - "Everybody 2 Breezy" (Telephones dub)
Review: ** REPRESS ** Pleasure Unit is the new label from the excellent Keyboard Masher and it gets off to a fine start here with a selection of reworks from Norwegian producer Telephones that's been issued in conjunction with the Berlin crew Untz Untz. By no means the most prolific of producers, Bergen-based Henning Severud has nonetheless graced the likes of Full Pupp, Sex Tags UFO and most recently The Very Polish Cut-Outs under the Telephones guise so you expect quality. And that's what you get as Severud reworks tracks from Skatebard, Love Nation and Dove Station in his own inimitable style. The lead take on Skatebard's "Confirmation Bias" is a particularly wonderful thing to behold, utilising a whole eight minutes to take flight into what the label quite aptly describe as a long lost Larry Levan remix of Manuel Gottsching's epic "E2 E4".
