Review: This warm and summery new offering from Australian siblings Angus & Julia must be ironically titled. 'Snow', the self-produced follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 album continues in a similar vein of breezy folk & pop, but with new found confidence. This is perhaps the effect of Rick Rubin's advice to them to write together as a duo, with sections of swapping verses, lyrical call and response, and vocal contrasts showing there's no sibling rivalry going on here. There are a few slow-burners that'll take a little while to sink in here, but overall this is another polished set from the duo, where each deceptively catchy track leans pleasantly into the next.

Review: It would be fair to say that Melanie de Biasio may not be single-handedly keeping Belgium's jazz tradition alive, but she's certainly spearheading a revival of sorts. This third studio set arrives some four years on from her sophomore set, and 12 months after her most adventurous work to date, the 25-minute Blackened Cities. It's a largely upbeat and hugely atmospheric affair, mixing her usual Nina Simome style jazz workouts with drowsy, piano-laden torch songs, evocative accapella interludes and, in the case of the brilliant "Gold Junkies", dubbed-out, four-to-the-floor fusions of trip-hop and dark soul. Throughout, her superb voice provides a stunning focal point.

Review: Easily outgrowing the original perception of them as stadium-indie bringers of gloom, Editors have evolved steadily with each record, and seemingly found themselves increasingly more comfortable each turn along the way. 'In Dream', the fifth from the Birmingham outfit, finds them expanding on the widescreen sweep of their sound, experimenting further with electronics, yet still maintaining a core of intimacy and introspection that has become their trademark. Thus, perversely, what may be their darkest record to date is also their most uplifting, with indelible songwriting, synth filigree and nocturnal atmospherics colliding to provide a black-clad tour de force.

Review: For their sixth full length album 'Violence', melancholic Birmingham alt-rockers Editors have adopted a grander synth-pop sound to frame their typically dark songwriting in. This change in direction comes from collaborating with the album's producer Leo Abraham and composer Blank Mass, who helped the band hone their electronic craft. The songwriting pairs grandiose stadium riffs with assertive synth-work; 'Hallelujah (So Low)' goes straight for the jugular with fat synth leads and lo-fi drums, and the chorus of lead single 'Magazine' balances sections of punchy electronic swagger with singalong melodic euphoria. On 'No Sound But The Wind', there's a glimpse of an earlier Editors sound, more atmospheric and spacious than the tracks that surround it - unsurprising as it's a song the band first debuted back at Glastonbury 2008 and have been re-working since. Following 2015's somewhat confused 'In Dream', Editors sound reinvigorated and confident in the direction 'Violence' is taking them in.

Review: Stubbornly hard to classify over their 22 years in the game thus far, Danish troupe Mew might flirt with shoegaze dreaminess, progressive inclinations and sugary pop, yet ultimately on 'Visuals' come up with a sound that's akin to no-one but themselves. Whilst it might be easy to see this hospitable record as a lurch for stadium territory, Mew have always displayed an ear for both sonic experimentation and delirious melody, and this collection merely sees them stripping their songwriting down into concise ditties that are rich in ethereal atmosphere as well as epic grandeur. The sense of wonder in Mew's music is as omnipresent as ever it was, even amidst the end-credits euphoria of these indelible songs.

Review: That particular twenty-first century phenomenon of the album assembled almost entirely by email finds a particularly charming exponent here in this debut by the don't-call-it-a-supergroup that includes members of Slowdive, Mogwai and Editors. Fans of all three of those bands won't be disappointed by this debut, which bears distinct traces of the dreamy soundscapes of the first, the widescreen cinematic drama of the second and the mighty riffage of the third, whilst arriving at a kind of poppy rapture whose melodious abandon is more surprising than its expansive melancholy, and which reaches a pinnacle in the charming 'For You Always', on which Rachel Goswell's gossamer vocals duel with a guesting Mark Kozelek in a near-knuckle reflection on their friendship and personal histories.

Review: Roisin Murphy seems to be getting more prolific with age. It's less than a year since the release of the critically acclaimed off-pop thriller Hairless Toys, and the Irish artist and former Moloko singer is ready to release the follow-up. Where its predecessor was bold, brassy and cheery, Take Her Up To Monto is an altogether more atmospheric affair, arguably closer in feel to her work with Moloko during the late '90s and early 2000s. Musically intriguing and largely downtempo in tone, it sees Murphy taking her left-of-centre take on pop in eccentric and evocative new directions. Even the album's most obviously upbeat moments - such as the cheery "Romantic Comedy" - feature musical backdrops that bristle with leftfield ideas and fuzzy, off-kilter electronics.

Review: Denmark's Agnes Obel is no ordinary folk singer-songwriter. Her music always carries something beautifully strange along with it, and this latest album, which has the strangely fitting name of Citizen Of Glass, might well be her most daring work to date. What is particularly special about this album is its production process; Obel has told the press that this extended piece of music consists of layers upon layers of different tracks, blended together to create something new, fresh and compelling. But, that's not all. The duets that you can hear throughout it aren't even human. She's brought to the foray a new technique that involves recording her own voice as a male cyborg, essentially creating the idea that she's singing along to a non-human version of herself. If you're thinking it's all hype, you're wrong; this album is a magnificently executed piece of melancholic pop music that pushes the boundaries of what has become a largely predictable genre as a whole. It's different, captivating and recommended...

Review: This Oklahoma alt-pop outfit, who found their origins in folk music, may be mostly known for their affiliations with Radiohead, and certainly 'Rituals' skirts along the same intersections between ethereal melody, introspective atmosphere and sonic experimentation that the Oxford dons made their own. Yet there are other strings to this band's bow too, Balancing out both a widescreen sweep and a bare-bones approach to arrangement, this is an understated yet very zeitgeist-tinged album with as much to offer in dystopian darkness as it does in intimacy.

Review: PIAS call on the respected close talker Gilles Peterson to curate No Deal Remixed, a self-explanatory addendum to last year's well received album from Belgian jazz artist Melanie De Biasio. Given the Brownswood boss's profile, it's little surprise to find an illustrious cast of musicians and producers involved here. Peterson's cachet is clear from the off with Mark Everett of Eels coaxed into contributing his first ever remix, which stays quite reverential to De Biasio's original, but reinterpretations from Seven Davis Jnr, Clap! Clap! And Johnwayne take the Belgian in pleasingly different directions. Gilles gets in on the act too with a lovely broken Latin refix alongside man like Simbad!

Review: When it came to recording their latest album, Soulwax's Daweale brothers decided on a novel approach. They gathered together a group of musician friends, including three drummers, at their Deewee studio in Ghent and recorded 16 tracks in one continuous take. Several run-throughs later, they had the basis of From Dewee, a fine full-length that offers a superb fusion of analogue electronics, live instrumentation and evocative vocals. Throughout, the brothers draw on many of their familiar influences - think acid house, minimal wave, new beat, synth-pop, post-punk, electronica and alternative rock - while delivering a set that bristles with fine melodies and innovative musical fusions. In other words, their method may have been different, but in essence it's a classic Soulwax album.

Review: The Dewale brothers first proper studio album in 12 years, From Deewee has been one of the most anticipated and warmly welcomed albums of the year. Unless you've been asleep or on another planet since March you've probably already streamed or download it... But nothing beats the vinyl treatment as it brings the one-take, non-stop recorded session concept to life with weight and a rich sound their analogue machines were invented for. Featuring drums from both Sepultura's Igor Cavalera and Turbowolf's Blake Davies and some of their most timeless, hooky fusions, this is a remarkable return from one of electronic music's most influential acts.
