Review: Sunshine Hit Me is the debut album from the British band The Bees. A testament to summery jovialty and DIY ingenuity, the album is as raw and earthen as it is soulful, with the band at the time only made up of founding members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, who wrote, performed and recorded the album alone using a home studio in Butler's parents' garden on the Isle Of Wight. Don't be confused by the LP's normative categorisation as "indie rock"; deft listeners can hear everything from reggae to neo-soul in this one, flaunting the pair's impressive musical education going into its making.

Review: Second time around for the Bees' terrific debut album, Sunshine Hit Me, which wowed critics and buyers alike on its initial release way back in 2001. The epitome of a surprise hit with admirably DIY roots - the duo behind it, Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, famously recorded it in a limited home studio built in the back garden of a residential house on the Isle of Wight - the album has lost none of its allure all these years on. Woozy, summery and lo-fi, with hazy horns and glassy-eyed vocals rising above backing tracks that variously doff a cap to soul, rocksteady, ska, 1960s dream pop, psychedelia and a wealth of subtle global musical influences, Sunshine Hit Me is a warming, smile-inducing treat. This edition also boasts a sextet of bonus cuts, which seem to be a mixture of B-sides and tracks plucked from the pair's archives.

Review: Founding Bees members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher recorded the original Sunshine Hit Me on the Isle of Wight in their own home garden studio which they called The Shed. A year after release in 2003 it got recognised with a Mercury Music Prize nomination and spawned some big singles. Now, 20 years on, it arrives once more but in an all-new and dubbed-out fashion. The six cuts include three which have never previously been released in any physical format and bring a fresh dimension to the originals.

Their 2005 debut and Mercury Prize nominated album The Back Room is a real fan favourite that now gets a special remaster and reissue on limited gatefold clear vinyl. It features the band's Top 10 single 'Munich' as well as others like 'Bullets', 'Blood' and 'All Sparks', all of which helped it to reach reached No. 2 in the UK album chart and go on to pick up more than one million sales worldwide. All these years later, it still stands up whether or not you were a fan the first time around.

Review: Jurassic 5's Quality Control album from all the way back in 2000 is a sonic manifesto that embodies their signature blend of old-school hip-hop vibes with a fresh twist. The album showcases the group's tight-knit chemistry and impeccable flow, delivering razor-sharp rhymes over hypnotic beats that are now well-known as their signature. With its infectious groove and insightful lyrics, Quality Control is a testament to the group's mastery of the genre and their commitment to delivering high-calibre music that is also full of timeless tunes that not only celebrate the art of hip-hop but also serve as a reminder of the importance of staying true to one's craft.

Track 1 (19:23)
Review: Scottish post-rockers Mogwai dropped their single 'My Father My King' back in October 2001 as a single. Except that it's more than just a single as it is over 20 minutes long and came as a companion to their 'Rock Action' album. It is an epic and sprawling work from the always melancholic and boundary-nudging outfit. For this year's Black Friday, it has been specially reissued for the first time since that original release on limited edition one-sided white vinyl. Just 1500 copies of this exist so do not sleep on a classic bit of Mogwai history.

Review: The third studio album by Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, Rock Action, was produced by Mercury Rev's Dave Fridmann, their first to incorporate synths and other more electronica-slanted textures, marking it out as a maverick LP compared to their many purely instrumental, guitar-centric slowcore projects. As ever with Mogwai, their mood of cryptic, slow-mo sublimatics remains. But there's also an early, innocent sheen on this project not heard on their later albums, be that achieved by more vocal murmurations or a feature from SFA's Gruff Rhys on 'Dial: Revenge'.

Review: Maverick vocalist and leftfield pop star Roisin Murphy head into bold new worlds with her Hairless Toys album. The avant-garde pop collection was released in 2015 and showcases Murphy's distinctive vocals and eclectic songwriting style. From the haunting melodies of 'Gone Fishing' to the pulsating grooves of 'Exploitation,' she shows great range but each track is unified by its air of sophistication and experimentation. Murphy's lyrical depth and emotive delivery add layers of complexity, while the production, featuring contributions from Eddie Stevens and Mark Brydon, creates a lush sonic landscape. As such this record is a testament to Murphy's artistic vision and a still standout blend of electronic and pop sounds.

It is another one that showcases Murphy's fearless creativity and boundary-pushing approach to music where distinct vocals, coupled with innovative production, create a dynamic and immersive listen. There is an infectious energy to 'Mastermind' and dreamy allure to 'Ten Miles High,' amongst a wide mix of influences from other genres and experimental soundscapes that confirmed once more than Murphy' is a true visionary.

There's no better example of a follow-up LP this week than Nation Of Language's 'A Way Forward', which brings up the rear and engulfs 'Introduction', the band's 2020 debut. Put simply, this album is krautrocky, whereas the last one was closer to synthpop. This subtle change came as a result of Ian Devaney, Aidan Noell, and Michael Sue-Poi attempting to "trace the roots of their sound", "hoping to learn something from the early influences of our early influences", from big names like Can through to Laurie Spiegel and Cluster. Recorded through the past year's lockdowns, a long-form mood of relentless melancholy is the result, blending driving drum machines with intense reverb and yearning male vocals - 'The Grey Commute' and 'Former Self' being emotive highlights. Keep an eye for the limited red and blue split vinyl version of this one.

Review: The heady collaborative cocktail of Marc Collin and the late Olivier Libaux, who came together in 2003, led to the quiet storm that its Nouvelle Vague, a project with its heart set on a winner from the start: the fusion of post-punk songwriting with the form and instrumentation of bossa nova. Intended as a one-off, the success of the project came as a surprise, but the duo were hardly willing to let a good thing slide for the sake of dourer endeavours. As part of a retrospective, comprehensive reissues series on top of a new album, this repress of the first album takes us back to where it all began.

Review: Will Holland is Quantic and with this project he has explored myriad different musical worlds, has traversed many different areas, most notably immersing himself in many aspects of Latin American music culture, often through collaboration. He's switched it up for this new record after first starting out with some experiments that soon turned into a love letter to disco which has long been a powerful emotional tool. He brings his own sense of percussive energy to the genre and has again worked with an array of talented mates including Connie Constance and Rationale plus vocalist Andreya Triana.

Review: Alan Stivell (Breton for 'gushing spring'), born January 6, 1944, is a French singer songwriter and musician. He campaigns for the recognition of the Breton people with their language, culture, and territory. He is, above all, a multi-instrumentalist: mainly Celtic harp, but also piano and keyboards, Irish flute, bombard, Scottish bagpipes and even percussion. Since the 1950s, thanks to his father's work, Stivell has helped revive the Celtic harp in Brittany; Renaissance De La Harpe Celtique does what it says on the tin; a thoroughly mystical and atmospheric album, the long-player comes packed with Celtic pentatonics, dewey field recordings, and, above all, mellifluous harp, all of which segue together to form an implicit instrumental picture of a Breton people in harmony with nature and spirit, making for a benchmark project in the Celtic folk revival of the 1970s.

Review: Scottish band Texas have announced the release of their new album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, which is a collaboration between Texas and American songwriter and pianist Spooner Oldham and was recorded at the renowned Fame Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The album features 12 of Texas' greatest hits, reimagined with Oldham's delicate piano lines. The result is a stripped-back, timeless sound that allows each track to shine. The album also includes two covers: 'Would I Lie To You' by Charles and Eddie and 'Save The Last Dance' by The Drifters. Texas described the album as 'like nothing we've ever done before,' and it is sure to be a must-listen for fans of the band and lovers of classic songwriting.

Review: Australian alt rockers The Triffids were destined for greater things than their homeland realised at the time. While enjoying some success Down Under between the late-1970s and late-80s, it was in the UK and Scandinavia that they really seemed to resonate. A decade-long love affair defined by some very 1980s singles (in the best possible way - 'Wide Open Road', 'Bury Me Deep In Love'), long before all that they put out Treeless Plain, a record that nodded to their future but was a far more DIY sounding thing. Suffice to say, when it arrived in 1983 the record made an impact, critically if not necessarily in mainstream consciousness. Blending folk with an altogether edgier and artier guitar sound, the songwriting and structure are still commendable.
