Review: Since establishing the Arttu project with a couple of releases on Philpot, Finnish producer Arttu Snelman (who previously recorded as Lump) has really made a name for himself as a exponent of loose limbed bang the box house tracks for the likes of 4 Lux and Clone Royal Oak - The Jerry The Cat featuring "Nuclear Funk" for the latter label remains a Juno HQ favourite. It's great then to see Snelman return to Soulphiction's enduring label for this classy two track demonstration of the current Arttu style. Lead cut "Next System" has that loose percussive sensibility, with hi hats spraying liberally in various directions whilst Snelman goes freestyle on the keys. However it's "Space Tripping" that resonates most, coming across like Prince jamming with Ron Hardy.

  1. Arttu - "Can't Get Down" (feat Kaye)
  2. Hakim Murphy - "ES1"
Review: Philpot's Traxworx series got off to a blinding start earlier this year with the dust down from Roman Rauch and label regular Ike and it looks to be quite the promising endeavour if the line-ups remain as strong as this second duel featuring Arttu and Hakim Murphy. Neither artist really needs a formal introduction here and both are well suited for the floor focused nature of this series. Arttu is first up with "Can't Get Down" a collaboration with Kaye that bounces along with loose and deadly intent - if you liked the Geeeman stuff on Clone you will love this pappy, especially when that sax comes in! On the flip Innerspace Halflifer Hakim Murphy goes for the abstract approach on "ES1" which features some superb drum edits.

Review: Those of you who, like us, revel in the return to prominence of piano driven house thumpers will have no doubt heard the 2009 anthem "Diskadenz" by some chap or chapette called Ike. The mysterious producer returns to the Philpot imprint for some 2011 heat, with the Supernatural EP. Dubby rhythms, bongos, shuffling hats and tense mechanical strings combine to hypnotic effect on "The Mole", which is marked by a killer spoken word vocal hook. "Supernatural" and "Ribbons" compete for your attention on the B Side, with the soupy analogue chug of the latter the highlight here at Juno HQ.

Review: The ever eccentric Krause Duo return to Philpot to deliver two hauntingly sinister tracks of minimal tech house. "Up" creeps along with moody basslines, spine chilling keys and a piano motif straight out of a 1930s silent horror film. "Spalter" takes the beat for more of a ride but the eerie keys still drench this menacing number. Truly unique dance material here from the boys.

Review: Manmade Science is producer Michel Baumann (aka Jackmate/SoulPhiction), engineer Nik Reiff and percussionist Benjamin Lieten (aka Phlegmatic). With the feeling of a raw live session, this masterpiece comes along in a variety between jazz and techno, soul and house. It also contains a live track from a Manmade Sciences Concert at the Jazz Open in Stuttgart. There are also collaborations with guest musicians like conductor, musical-director and multi-instrumentalist John Thrower playing the sax on the starter "Chicago Sidewalks" and the last song "Brown Sugar". There are some lovely vocals from Isaiah Femi Awonaike on "Turn down the Lights" and the garage feel comes with the stunning voice of Haldor Laegreid on "Just tell me when...". Review: Here's the new 12" from Manmade Science (Soulphiction, Nik Reiff and Phlegmatic) to introduce their forthcoming debut-album on Philpot in November 2006. "Just Tell Me When" is the bomb...no more no less! Coming in two versions, there is the nu disco mix with haunted strings and on the other hand the vox mix with classy garage vocals by Haldor Laegreid. "Difunkt" on the flip is a live session and the perfect extension of the A-side... dub-disco with subtle layers of instrumentation, and live bass & percussions. Feels like the Paradise Garage never shut down... ;-)

Review: Mr. Fries is up next on Soulphiction's esteemed Philpot imprint with some deep dusty and downright sensual house that brazenly takes its cues from the Kenny Dixon Jr. and Three Chairs sound out of the Motor City and when such tributes are this flattering - it's all good. From the sweltering A side cut "Visions" which is perfect for those long hot sexy nights, the evocative and soulful vibe continues well into the B side. "Alittlewhile" is a sombre, woozy gospel inspired cut in the vein of the aforementioned Dixon's Forevernevermore opus, then the pumpin' and funky "Modern Conversations" ends things on a more positive note, complete with life affirming vocal samples and tough as hell MPC loops to boot. This Dortmund based producer has appeared previously on Contrary, Soul Notes and Wolf Music.

  3. We Were
Review: Our man from Seattle strikes again on Philpot Records after several releases on imprints like Alphahouse or Telegraph. We are glad to welcome Steven Ford (aka Bruno Pronsato) back after his stunning "Open Your Eyes" debut. "All Night Blahblah" is taken from Pronsato's great album "Silver Cities" which was originally released two years ago on Orac Records of Canada and is nowadays a hard to find piece of vinyl. The extraordinary vocals are done by Orac label chief Randy Jones (aka Caro). Reason enough for the Philpot crew to pull this amazing tune out again and give it some straight Jackmate treatment to rock the floor. On the flip "We Were" is a jackin minimal mover with some strange acid bleeps, repetitive beats and typical Pronsato claps. Definitely a record that would make a likely appearance for the late hours at Berlin's Panorama Bar!

  3. Dirty Haze
Review: After debuting on vinyl in fine style with last year's Tjuma drop Can't Get Enough, Viennese producer Roman Rauch takes a step up the deep house ladder with this tangerine tinged clear twelve inch for the Philpot label. Included are remixes of tracks from the aforementioned debut along with a new production from Rauch himself - and Philpot bossman Soulphiction calls shotgun with a remix of "Can't Get Enough" that rolls across the A Side with the sort of fizzy aplomb you'd expect. Of more interest is the B Side which sees the welcome return of Juno favourite Eerdbeerschnitzel! The German remixes "Bio Rhythm", transforming it into a twisted, low centric house groove filled with a multiplicity of deft textures and atmospherics. A wholly unique sound befitting of the productions Mr Keiling graced us with last year. Rauch rounds off proceedings with the spectral bump of "Dirty Haze" which takes on a hue reminiscent of recent Lone output as it progresses.
