Review: Given their famously militant approach to music formats, it's a surprise to see Paranoid London's previously vinyl-only 2014 debut album finally being issued on CD. For those who missed out first time around, it's well worth checking. As you might expect, it makes great use of both vintage analogue equipment and similarly old skool influences, in turn doffing a cap to Phuture-style Chicago acid, Inner City, hip-house, Green Velvet, Dance Mania style ghetto-house, and stripped-back, dancefloor-friendly machine soul. Despite the ragged nature of some of the material, it's both hugely listenable and hangs together impressively - no mean feat given the DJ-friendly nature of the tracks. It all adds up to a retro-futurist treat.

  10. (Vi-Vi) Vicious Games (with Josh Caffe ) (7:23)
Review: When it comes to jackin' Chicago style acid house revivalism, few can hold a candle to Paranoid London. As this long-awaited second album proves, the duo is the undisputed masters of sweaty, TB-303 driven jack-tracks and - as recent single "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" and LP opener "Starting Fights" prove - classic-sounding vocal cuts that recall the glory years of Fingers, Inc in the mid-to-late 1980s. Interestingly, "PL" boasts far more collaborations than we've seen from Paranoid London before, including a string of ragged club cuts blessed with evocative spoken word vocals, a thrusting acid throb-job with lead vocals by Simon Topping and a suitably twisted, machine-driven hook up with Arthur Baker and Alan Vega (the raw and weighty "Angel Of Hell").

Pledits 3 (12")
Cat: PLW 004. Rel: 31 Aug 21
Techno
  1. Feelin Butts (6:13)
  2. Wanka Beats (7:47)
Review: Is there anyone out there making house as raw, fucked up and visceral as Paranoid London right now? The pair make sounds that hark back to the scuzzy days of early Chicago while bringing plenty of fresh ideas. Their Pledits series hits volume number three and moves to vinyl for the first time to mark the occasion. This new 12" is a direct to dance floor banger with 'Feelin Butts' slapping away on a relentless coruscated bassline and with ghetto vocal loops over the top. 'Wanka Beats' is less in your face but just as physical as it locks you in ragged loops, caustic synths and scintillating percussion that is pure late night warehouse music.

(Vi Vi) Vicious Games
Cat: PDON 009. Rel: 30 Aug 19
Techno
  1. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (album edit) (7:22)
  2. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (Drums dub) (5:11)
  3. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games (dub) (7:58)
Review: Given that acid revivalists Paranoid London have yet to put a foot wrong, it's no surprise to find that "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" is another absolute belter. It's taken from the duo's forthcoming album and features sometime Posthuman collaborator Josh Caffe channeling his inner Robert Owens and Jamie Principle over a retro-futurist backing track. In its full length, the track brilliantly combines Paranoid London's jacking drums and thrusting acid bass with dreamy chords and just the right amount of glassy-eyed melodic flourishes. It sounds like a classic TRAX release given the Paranoid London treatment, which I'm sure we all agree is a very good thing indeed. If you're in the mood for something even sleazier and more driving, the Bam Bam-inspired Dub has it covered.

Cult Hero (Do You Wanna Touch Me)
  1. Cult Hero (Do You Wanna Touch Me) (album edit) (6:45)
  2. Cult Hero (Do You Wanna Touch Me) (club mix) (5:47)
  3. Cult Hero (Do You Wanna Touch Me) (Slow) (7:29)
Review: House and techno badboys Paranoid London are proceeding the release of their second album with a bunch of singles from it. First up is "Cult Hero" featuring Simon Topping - one of many guest vocalists on the full length. It's a bristling acid house cut with tight, corrugated drums and relentless 303 mania ripping up the groove. Topping's deadpan vocals are layered over the top and bring to mind the more anthemic work of Depeche Mode. "Club Mix" is even more caustic and kinetic, while closer "Slow Mix" strips back everything but for the lunching drums and demonic vocals of Topping.
