Review: Studio Ghibli's superb back catalogue of anime films gets pulled apart and reworked in fresh jazz style for this second volume of Ghibli Jazz. Japanese trio All That Jazz are the band performing the fantastic new versions with the gorgeous vocals of Yukiko Kuwahara front and genre of each of the lively tunes. Underneath is a sparse but atmospheric mix of piano, bass and drums that gets you on your toes and dancing no matter where you are. Anime lovers may well recognise some of these tunes as being from much loved films such as 'Spirited Away', 'Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind' and 'Princess Mononoke'.

Review: Marcus Belgrave's Gemini II album has never been reissued before with the original artwork, but here it comes with a Japanese Obi-strip and featuring prominent musicians and legends like Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Roy Brooks and Harold McKinney. This is a diverse record with plenty of spirituality and a loud and proud sense of blackness. The standout tune 'Space Odyssey' is the best known, not least because it was later covered by pioneering Detroit techno talent Carl Craig. Next to that tense cosmic workout are two parts of 'Gun Finger' which are both horn led and upbeat grooves, the seductive sounds of the title tune and free-bop jam 'Marcia's Opal'. 'Odoms Cave' is a tender and introverted closer.

How Many MC'S (3:36)
Review: Black Moon was a vital hip-hop collective from the East Coast. They were making waves at the same time as peers such as Jeru The Damaja and of course the legendary Mobb Deep. They shared plenty of sonic characteristics - the low-slung beats, the dark sense of soul, the pervading menace and moodiness that makes the tunes so alluring despite being stripped back. The bars of course are the icing on the cake and here rapper Buckshot is in fine form on 'Who Got Da Props?' with its funky bass and liquid chords, then on the swaggering, late-night vibes of 'How Many MC'S' with its plucked guitar riffs and snappy boom bap.

Review: Athens of the North have done plenty of work with the excellent catalogue of Brief Encounters, including albums of singles as well as some tasty 7"s. Next up from a band that broke up way way too soon is this album on P-Vine which first came in 1981. It is a private press holy grail that takes in modern soul, disco, sweet soul and more and is well worth having on vinyl not only for its commercial value but the musical goodness within. An essential one for soul loves with standouts like 'Since I Met You Girl' and 'If You Want My Love'.

Groovin' At The Night Club (4:42)
Review: Burton Inc is perhaps not one of the better-known soul bands of the late 1970s. Formed by married couple Charles and Barbara Burton and featuring their son Tire amongst the backing musicians, the band recorded and released one album, 1976's L.A Will Make You Pay $$$, on their own private press imprint. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. A-side 'Nation Song' is a glossy, slow-motion call for global unity featuring the twin attractions of incredible horn arrangements and spacey synthesizers (not to mention a fine lead vocal from Barbara), while flipside 'Groovin At The Night Club' is a slightly more up-tempo affair rich in jazzy guitar flourishes, fluid bass guitar and more incredible horn sounds.

Review: Joyce Cooling went on to become a hugely successful pop and jazz singer and guitarist but before all that she recorded Cameo, a much-revered debut album that now gets reissued for the very first time. It's a tune with rich Brazilian influences that veers from swing to pop and back again with her vocals on three of the seven tunes as much of the focus is on her guitar. She is joined by skilled sideman such as keyboardist Jay Wagner and it makes for a superb listen featuring several fine performances.

Review: For the first time in a decade and a half, Kansas City-born multi-instrumentalist Nathan Davis is having his If album reissued. It first came on the respected educator and musician's own Tomorrow International label in 1976 but now arrives on Japanese favourite P-VINE. Any true jazz-funk and rare groover head will be familiar with its unique charms and anyone not soon will be in love. Only 100 copies of this were pressed up back in the day which is why it has become so hard to find and such a cult classic. Do not sleep on this one.

Japan's P-Vine present a vinyl reissue of his highly sought after 1976 album Movin' In. Proper, good old fashioned soul music, with arrangements by the late great Ernie Freeman. Maligmat was also known for his work with other short-lived outfits such as The Mob and The Rocky Fellers. He still continues performing to this day with his brother Eddie, now based in Hawaii, under their new name - The Fellers in the Rockys.

Review: He might not be quite as well known but top producer and trackmaker edbl should be considered to be right up there with the likes of Tom Misch. He has his own distinctive style and it's packed with soul and emotion. Now he finally makes his debut in Japan with this new album on P-VINE which collects together two 12" EPs from him and friends. Steeped in rap jazz knowledge, it's all lounge grooves with naive melodies and gentle piano keys, dusty and deep beats, heady highs and romantic lows.

Vocals feature throughout and often soar to the highest of heights and make it a charismatic album. Sample hounds and hip hop lovers might well recognise the track 'Optimystical' which has been pillaged by Detroit great Andres before now. elsewhere there is real freeform magic on 'Music Is Nothing But A Prayer', cosmic exploration on 'Trace Of Trane' and heartwarming beauty on the closer 'Peace (Salaam)'.

Review: Ernie Story's Meditation Blue is a catnip record for serious collectors. Many have longed for it to be reissued and made more readily available and now they get the wish thanks to Japan's Groove Diggers series on P-Vine. This was originally a private press record which explains its scarcity after it was recorded in 1997 in Minneapolis as the one and only album by the singer-songwriter and producer Ernie Story. It's a seamless fusion AOR meets modern soul with laidback grooves and a hint of gospel to really elevate it. A must-own record for soul collectors with plenty of emotional high points.

It has been newly remastered for the occasion and finds the talented Felton at his best as he lays down his signature mellow grooves. For proof look no further than the groovy soul of 'The Power Of Love (It's In My Heart)' has Angela Winbush as a youth on vocals and features great musical depth, while s 'The Power Of Love (It's In My Heart)', which has never been released as a single, and 'Spreading Fever (Part 1)' is as smooth as they come with its silky and seductive lead sax.

The master keyboardist has a cult following thanks to his magically mellow and sophisticated playing style. He was prolific, too, recording several great albums but none as definitive as this one, which is a sought after and pricey gem if you want an original. It has many highlights such as the fantastic jazz-funk cover of the Delfonic's classic 'La, La Means I Love You', groove-laden soul in 'The Power Of Love (It's In My Heart)' and the lively arrangement of 'Family Reunion.'

It came on his own label and the reason it is so well thought of is that it has become a real staple of the rare groove scene thanks to how much of it get splayed by DJs and how many key collectors have it on their racks. This reissue, with an all new remastering, arrives via P-Vine with gems like the standout jazz funk gem 'Bee Bop Boogie' one of many of its tunes that are still rare groove classics.

Review: Man With A Gun is the debut long player from Singaporean prog and funk group Funkgus. It has a famously enigmatic toxic blue jacket that lurks you in and musically it is no less intriguing. As well as a passionate cover of King Curtis's 'Memphis Soul Stew' there are plenty of supremely psychedelic sounds. The opener is steeped in funky bass riffs with rock-tinged drum breaks and plenty of raw vocals and from there the grooves come thick and fast, often with plenty of texture and charismatic vocals such as on 'Spill The Wine' and the leggy, expressive sounds of 'Everyday People' with its twisted wah wah guitars.

The North Carolina-based singer-songwriter has become an object of cult admiration over the years which is what might explain how an original of that album can often go for upwards of $800 at auctions. Review: Chicago-native Cecil Lyde's Home Boy And The C.O.L. album is often said to be his standout work. It dropped back in 1984 with his Home Boy group and was a swift follow up to 1982's self titled debut. Earlier works were defined by a lovely lo-fi aesthetic while this record goes big right for the off with an eight minute epic to kick off. 80s electro-funk then defines much of the rest of it with all sorts of big hits along the way. It makes for a luxurious listen with some self-reflective tunes like the ballad 'I Don't Want To Be A Movie Star,' and then some tension building and passionate vocal harmonies. This reissue comes a limited edition LP with obi-strip.

Review: 'Liberated Brother' might just refer to Weldon Irvine's liberation from the trappings of fame. While this debut album of this, originally released in 1972, was made around the same time as his come-up with Nina Simone as her bandleader, Irvine was not as impacted by publicity or subject to the same degree of pop culture notoriety. But just because a spark burns brightly, doesn't make it the most effervescent; this first LP charts the multi-instrumentalist's futuristic frolicks through funk-jazz, fusion and soul, all distilled into a romantic 8-tracker of trilling pianos ('Liberated Brother') and moody noir jams ('Gloria'). Hot off the plate with a reissue by Japanese label P-Vine, this is an exclusive obi-strip version not many will get their mitts on; it could still be you, though.

He released several classic albums man of which are now being reissued thanks to P-Vine, but not before being fully remastered for the occasion. Weldon and The Kats was one that he put out on his own label Nodlew Records after releasing some albums through RCA and Strata-East. It is perfectly indicative of his style and has his early work 'Mr.P.C' on it, which was recorded in 1968 with Steve Grossman on tenor sax and sometime Miles Davies associate Lenny White on drums. This one has never been reissued before so snap it up before it goes again.

Review:  A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

Meanwhile, his love of playing loud, in turn getting the most out of that powerhouse voice, is perhaps less apparent when listening now, 60 years after his death. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-r since 1992, his backing band would eventually comprise two musicians who played with the legendary Tampa Red, whose songs James also had a habit of recording. Blues After Hours is certainly definitive James stuff, a raw, drawly, barroom of a record that sees the artist and his accompaniment invoke memories, borrowed and owned, of hot evenings in Deep South bars. Sadly lost long before his time, dying from a heart attack in 1963, just days before a European tour that would have catapulted his name globally, this is a fantastic memento of true legend.

Review: The J.B.'s was the name of James Brown's band from 1970 through the early 1980s and this Reunion outfit featuring original members pays homage to that era and to the sounds of the great funk legend. They were there of course, so this is as direct and real as its comes. First up here is 'Do The Doo' (part 2) which is all languid funk licks, loose bass and seductive drum playing with a big vocal over the top. 'What About The Music' (part 2) picks up the pace with some big horns, and a buttery and elastic vocal turn backed by funky rhythms.

Review: The 1978 self-titled album by the free soul band Lemuria remains much talked about around rare groove circles. Formed by Kirk Thompson of the iconic Kalapana, it's a proud statement of Hawaiian AOR, and highlights the magic touch of Thompson as both a keyboardist, and behind the mixers, his work as the album's serving producer. For this new reissue edition, P-VINE is including three bonus tracks and two alternate takes for the first time on vinyl, resulting in this deluxe fourteen track double gatefold package.

Originally released in 1977 on the esteemed Dobre label, this album stands as one of Demar's most significant works from the 1970s. Review: Les Demerle Sound 67 is a group defined by core member and prodigious drumming talent DeMerle, who famous playing power and rhythmic elasticity is what stands out here. It is a high class jazz record with his bold presence and command of modern jazz drumming front and centre as his side men do a fine job of filing in the spaces with Randy Brecker on trumpet and rock diva Genya Ravan adding her own vocals. This album is a great find in some long lost vault that contains plenty of evidence as to why DeMerle would go on to be so revered in ensuring years.

The first tune out of the blocks is a brutal drum assault with crashing breaks and edgy rapped vocals from Darthreider on 'Subete Maboroshi.' Review: Main Source cut a sharp figure when they broke through in the early 90s, made up of Toronto's K-Cut and Sir Scratch and New York's Large Professor. Their debut album Breaking Atoms is one of the greatest from that golden era for hip-hop, and there's no shortage of hot tracks to pick for a 7" pressing, but here Japan's P-Vine picks out the classic 'Live At The Barbeque' and backs it up with Large Professor's own self-titled joint. This is early 90s hip-hop at its best, boiled down on a handy little single for those moments when you just want the hits.

Review: We've been treated to a few revisits of tracks from the mighty Main Source and their seminal debut album Breaking Atoms, and now P-Vine are pressing up two of the best on a crafty little 7". 'Looking Out The Front Door' is a stone cold classic through and through, riding a dense and dusty break as Large Professor laments on love gone wrong. Despite the downcast lyrical theme, the vibe of the track is sun-kissed mellow gold, thanks in no small part to the buttery Rhodes licks. On the flip we get 'Snake Eyes', the opening cut from the album which cemented Main Source's legendary status back in 1991.

Review: Trombonist Ira Nepps - a member of Hawaiian AIR classic Lemur who also recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Leon Russell and BB King - released only one album and that was this one in 1979. Trombone Feeling is a seamless and soulful fusion of jazz and mellow styles with Brazilian sunshine flavours that brings to mind the work of the great Roy Ayers. It features such gems as the lush title track with its sublime female choses and the more low key and soothing sounds of 'Trickey Mickey' as well as plenty more. It has become a cult and hard-to-find album having only been pressed up 500 times back in the day, and it was popularised on the radio on the US mainland.

Review: Ollie Nightingale's 1978 gospel-soul classic, Sweet Surrender, sees a much needed re-release on Japanese label, P-Vine. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, the Ollie Nightingale project journeyed through various, fruitful iterations - from The Gospel Writer Juniors to The Dixie Nightingale's - before settling on their final form. The result? A sound that is mature and feels fully fleshed out. The opening track, 'Here I Am Again', follows a deliciously slow-paced, side-stepping rhythm, complete with subdued brass and Aretha-hued backing vocals; it's a texturally and emotionally rich classic. 'I Gave Her Everything And What She Needed' is a lyrical masterpiece reflecting on what is revealed when looking back on a past relationship, sees a more pared back take on the instrumentation front, allowing Hoskin's signature vocals to really shine. Leaning more into the funk end of the spectrum, 'It's A Sad Thing' is a track that's sure to get a room moving. Rightly recognised as the most successful southern gospel group of the 50s through to the 60s, Sweet Surrender is a crucial addition to any funk-soul-gospel fan's record collection.

Review: A stellar piece of ambient jazz finally getting the vinyl treatment. 'Green' was Robohands (aka Andy Baxter) debut LP that combines ambient, jungle and hip-hop sensibilities into a relaxing jazz package that rightfully earned its popularity on YouTube. Described as a future classic, 'Green' is an effortless and high quality piece of jazz coming direct from the underground with zero promotion - the talent speaks for itself. 'Lost' is an immediate favourite, a lowkey drum breakbeat over soulfull piano lends itself to a near tropical vibe. 'Dream' is a cozy banger, reminiscent of the instrumentation from Solange in her more recent works, while 'Ascend' feels like an extract from a Studio Ghibli movie - Baxter's concept of setting and atmosphere are perfect. Fans of lo-fi hip-hop and ambient as a genre need to know the name Robohands.

After that, she went on to sing with Syl Johnston's band and sign with the notorious Chess label in 1964. It was there she dropped her biggest hit 'Selfish One', which reached number 11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, before many more tunes came on the likes of Brunswick and others. Her 1980 album A New Beginning For was produced by Chicago soul scene mainstay James Van Lear and now gets its first reissue courtesy of P-Vine. It shows the range and depth of emotion Jackie could tap into with a mix of slow motion stirrers and more funky and upbeat numbers.

They did so in 1980 before later reissuing it via GEC and although it isn't one of the most well known albums amongst funk heads, we think that is rather a crime because it is a top notch if not underrated album. It is couched in the traditions of the genre but with nods to styles like P-Funk. If you can find an OG copy you will have to shell out plenty of money and although this same label put out a CD version in 1994, it has not been reissued on vinyl before.

They also collaborated with the lush tones of soul singer and fellow Chicagoan Jackie Ross on records for Chess and Brunswick that have long since been forgotten. This licensed seven-inch single boasts two of the set's most potent tracks: single 'Body Fusion', a super-sweet, string-drenched slab of dewy-eyed jazz-funk/disco fusion that has been sampled on numerous occasions by house and nu-disco producers, and the lesser-celebrated 'Put The BS Aside'. This is arguably even better: a super-soulful post-disco number that boasts sumptuous orchestration and lusciously loved-up male and female vocals.

It is an alias of a hip hop beat maker from Montreal in Canada who also goes by the name of Specfics and is known for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His take on the genre is dusty and jazz inflected and as well as his sophomore long player Rock To This Beat from 2008 being reissue don vinyl, so too is his debut, 2007's With A Loop And Some Swing. It showcases his deft, light touch perfectly with the sort of laidback and romantic grovers that sooth the soul, while plenty of great guest verses add layers of extra charm.

It was a second solo album for the Montreal, Canada producer known as Specifics and someone revered for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His jazzy and dusty take on hip hop comes with plenty of rich new-soul hooks and his debut in 2007, With A Loop And Some Swing, remains a much-loved record. Review: The Three of Us is a name you might not know even if you are something of a jazz lover. It was the name that jazz keyboardist Hilton Felton - who will be much more well known to those with an ear for rare groove - used for this one groovy soul-jazz album. It arrived in super limited quantities back in 1971 and is now hugely sought after and therefore also rather expensive on the second-hand market. Joining Felton for these sessions were bassist Joe Harris and stickman Johnathan Setell, but it is Hilton's touch that really elevates the music - his free melodies and deep grooves really make their mark. This one has never been reissued before.
