Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

Review: Single LP Editrion: While their 50 Weapons imprint may be winding up, Modeselektor's Monkeytown imprint is still in full swing, releasing all sorts of interesting electronic music lately from producers as diverse as Robot Koch, Omar Souleyman and Howling. This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available soon as well.

Review: Back in 2017, Moderat decided to take an extended break and bowed out with a now mythical performance in front of 17,000 Berliners. More Data, their surprise fourth album and welcome return to action, was largely recorded during lockdown and inspired (in part, at least) by feelings of isolation and information overload. The resultant music is typically hard-to-pigeonhole, offering a unique fusion of IDM, skewed electronic pop (see the uneasy but excellent 'Easy Prey'), dystopian breakbeat techno dreaminess ('Drum Glow'), Radiohead-ish fuzziness ('Soft Edit'), trance-inducing dancefloor hypnotism (the wonky and timeless 'Numb Bell') and weighty, heart-aching electronica ('Doom Hype'). It's good to have them back.

Review: Moderat performed what they knew would be one of their last concerts in 2017 - at least, for a while, anyway. Having been in need for a hiatus, COVID restrictions kicked in and the pressure to juggle performing and music-making was off. Thus came 'MORE D4TA', an album that strove after connection and collaboration in an era where the potential for such was stunted. Now finally finished and polished, the album comes for all to enjoy, demonstrating some of the duo's most focused and pop-structured production and modular chops.

Review: Following the release of their Who Else album in 2019, Modeselektor decided to take a different approach with their next full-length excursion. Instead of being a studio album, they'd create a seamless mixtape entirely made up of their own music - none of which had been released before. Extended then is an album with a twist: a kind of home listening-friendly DJ mix crafted from tracks made at different points between 2007 and 2020. Made up of snippets of no less than 27 tracks, the mix effortlessly slips between gnarled futurist bass music, melodic electronica, warped club cuts, spaced-out dub techno, next-level dancehall, ambient interludes named in honour of events they've played over the years and bombastic, rave-igniting workouts. It's undeniably ace and every bit as good as their other albums.

Review: If your first thought when listening to Modeselektor's superb, thrill-a-minute mixtape EXTENDED was "I wish I had longer, unmixed versions of these tracks", then EXTLP should be right up your alley. It includes 15 "full length" mixes of tracks from its predecessor, offering listeners a chance to savour that set's most rave-igniting numbers in a more DJ-friendly form. It's a breathlessly brilliant collection all told, with highlights including the cyber-crunk heaviness of Flohio hook-up 'Social Distancing', the metallic intensity of 'Ohm', the post-dubstep haziness of Paul St Hilaire collaboration 'Movement', and the glittering '90s IDM revivalism of 'Bilbao'.

  11. War Cry (guitar by Sascha Ring of Apparat)
Review: Over the years, Modeselektor have forged a reputation as fearless innovators, neatly sidestepping genres and frequently confounding critics. Given their tireless touring schedule and the fact they run two prolific labels it's perhaps no surprise that it's been some four years since the last full-length Modeselektor album. Monkeytown flits effortlessly between skittish 140 BPM bass music, clandestine electronica, sludgy hip-hop and even warehouse-flavoured tropical rhythms (see "German Clap"). There are some real standouts, including a dreamy, slo-mo pop outing with PVT, two collaborations with Thom Yorke and a droning Anti-Pop Consortium hook-up. Must-check.

  4. Social Distancing (Ad Lip edit) (2:09)
  5. Social Distancing (Richard Devine A Cappella edit) (1:05)
Review: This is a seance EP to result from the extended mixtape that German genre breakers Modeselektor recently put out. Social Distancing once again shows off the duo's ability to mix up hip-hop and rave sounds. It is a tune with bubbling synth work and rave stabs, but proper rapped vocals from a female with plenty of attitude. Add in booming bass and trap influenced hits and you have a real winner. The remix from Little Snake goes raw and stripped back, FJAAK go for a blistering warehouse techno banger, Ad Lip layers up bass and Richard Devine closes out with a mad a cappella.
