Review: Produced using nothing but vintage analog equipment - Roland Space Echo, Echoplex, Korg tape delay, vintage signal processors, noise generators, Sequential Circuits 8 bit samplers and numerous analog synthesizers - "The Coldest Season" project goes back to the heady days of Berlin-based proto dub/techno variations, recorded and produced in Detroit and Chicago. Three of the worlds most important Techno cities colliding to form a whole that perfectly bridges the gap between The Motor City's emotive arrangements, The Windy city's percussive robustness, and Berlin's life-altering Basic Channel continuum. Deep Chord brings an absolutely amazing release on Modern Love.

Review: Since first emerging under the name Demdike Stare on Modern Love back in 2009, Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker's project has provided listeners with a series of self-consciously dark and mysterious albums inspired by the occult (Demdike was a notorious 17th century witch). This fifth full-length - a double CD, no less - is as formidably creepy, intense and bloodthirsty as their previous outings and provides alternate takes -along with bonus material - of the tracks that appeared previously on a series of equally collectable twelve inches. While there are moments of fleeting beauty - see the gentle "Shades", bubbling echo-techno of "Metamorphasis" or sleepy ambience of "All This Is Ours (Sunrise)" - these merely serve to highlight the horror-fixated darkness and gothic soundscapes that abound throughout. Genuinely chilling, all told.

Review: Mancunian sonic sorcerers Demdike Stare return to Modern Love for their seventh full length entitled Passion. Sean Canty and Miles Whitaker present an asymmetric reimagining of UK club styles taking in frenzied drum trax ("Know Where To Start"), shortwave jungle ("At It Again"), pinging dance hall and clipped, post-punk riddims ("Caps Have Gone"/"Pile Up")' on what is also described as the pair's most 'direct and fucked-up record to date'. The cover artwork is taken from the duo's live shows with visual artist Michael England - which premiered at last year's Berlin Atonal festival.

Review: The new album Wonderland is Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty's first LP as Demdike Stare since 2012's Elemental and arrives a year on after the completion of their Testpressing EP series for Modern Love. Starting out with the the demonic and guttural body basher "Curzon" where you know right away that this album will be one wild ride. "Hardnoise" goes from industrial noise to sub bass heavy techno to blissful IDM over its epic 10 minute duration. Elsewhere, "Sourcer" tackles a mangled form of late '90s techstep while the beautiful closer "Overstaying" is a glorious exercise in hypnotism that sits somewhere between minimal techno and deconstructed electro.

Review: For fans of Demdike Stare's brand of intense techno and dystopian late night electronica, this edition of new album Wonderland is something of an early Christmas present. You see, it not only includes their new full-length in all its percussive, pleasingly funky glory - a reflection of their move towards more club-friendly pastures, even if their love of experimental noise and dark, wayward electronics remains intact - but also two discs of material from the duo's acclaimed, previously vinyl-only Testpressings series of white label 12" singles. Given that these works, which gleefully mutilate the rhythm structures of techno, dancehall, UK garage and IDM, hugely influenced the creation of Wonderland, it's a move that makes perfect sense.

Review: Since Demdike Stare released their last album in 2012, the world seems to have got altogether darker and more shocking. It certainly seems a fitting time for the Lancastrian duo to return with their sixth full length. Wonderland naturally boasts a number of typically clandestine, pagan outings - see the dense, industrial influenced "Curzon", fearlessly distorted "Hardnoise" and mutant jungle fuzziness of "Sourcer" - but also moments of frenzied funk and quiet contemplation. In the latter category you'll find sublime album closer "Overstaying", where shimmering synth melodies and ghostly chords rub shoulders with elastic bass and skittish drum machine percussion. However dark and bleak things may seem, there's always hope, even in the intensely unsettling world of Demdike Stare.

Review: * DEMDIKE REPRESS * Lancashire dwellers Demdike Stare revel in surrounding themselves in a haunting mysticism so it's no surprise to read the title of the second of three LPs for release on Modern Love in 2010 is a reference to the 'Tibetan Book Of The Dead'. Across half a dozen tracks and 45 minutes, "Liberation Through Hearing" infuses your senses with a sense of deep seated paranoia via the narcotic, strung out dubbed grooves and usage of unsettling samples. "Regolith" in particular brings to mind the music that soundtracks survival horror videogame Silent Hill with the patter of sonic interference soon dominated by abrasive metallic textures. On the flip "The Stars Are Moving" approaches a concession to techno aesthetics as electro pulses gradually rise from the sonic mist. This is expanded upon on "Bardo Thodol", the only track with percussion at its core. The gently undulating chords that rise from the eleven minutes of white noise that make up "Matilda's Dream" makes for a transcendental ending to this fascinating, hypnotic release.

40 Years Under The Cosh
Frontin'
Review: Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker make a swift return to the Testpressing series with a sixth installment arriving just a month after the excellent TP#5. The superbly titled "40 Years Under The Cosh" finds the Demdike pair wedged in the punishing crawlspace between Detroit Techno and vintage grime for six thrilling mind bending minutes, with the track gradually falling apart at the seams as the middle of the track draws close. Fans of both Pharrell Williams and Demdike Stare (there must be one or two) will probably express disappointment that "Frontin" isn't a cover of the big hatted fella's noughties hit; instead it's a brutal exercise in lurching industrial wave that will fry the brain cells of unsuspecting individuals.

Review: Wow, another unexpected treat from the Modern Love family following that Low Jack LP earlier this year. Gary Howells might not be the most familiar of names, but he's a strong facet in the Modern Love story, collaborating with Miles Whittaker as Pendle Coven in addition to those two being responsible for HATE alongside Mr Andy Stott. After a GH EP dropped on Modern Love a few years back, Howells returns with a quite stunning debut LP, Household Demigod, that lands in the snug crawlspace between techno and black metal. All tracks in this album were simply made on a Boss DR550, a battered old Charvel guitar and a few guitar pedals: raw power!

Review: When he's not busy producing ear-shaking industrial techno or corrupted house bangers, Paris' Low Jack appears under his birth name, Philippe Hallais. While this is technically a debut under his real name, we've already gotten a taste of what the talented producer can offer beyond the dancefloor. This album, An American Hero, comes through on Andy Stott's sublime Modern Love and we feel that there couldn't be a better match on our charts this week. Although the large part of these tunes would scare most normal people off any dance piste, there is something unmistakably club-minded about it; the choice of sonics and atmospherics is most certainly on the experimental side of the spectrum, but there is a noticeable movement and pulse-like beat at its foundations. For instance, the likes of "Everything (Good)" or "Angela (Square)" burst out of the speakers with a mind-bending vortex of sounds that somehow find their own kinetic energy and pull you in to a subtle groove. Compared to most left field or ambient albums out there, Hallais has made sure to keep you locked and excited for the whole damn thing. Recommended. Warmly.

Review: Arguably better known these as distorted eletronica and industrial techno wrong 'un Low Jack, Philippe Hallais is undoubtedly one of electronic music's most singular talents. Further proof of his forthright approach is provided by An American Hero, which marks his first album free of the Low Jack alias. It's a typically experimental in tone, with the producer's usual metallic sounds, mind-altering distortion and analogue fuzz all in evidence, alongside pulse-like rhythms and clear club-wise movements. For example, tracks such as "Everything (Good)" and "Angela (Square)" burst out of the speakers with a mind-bending vortex of sounds that pull you into a subtle groove. Compared to most left field or ambient albums out there, Hallais has made sure to keep you locked and excited for the whole damn thing.

Review: Along with pal Black Zone Myth Chant, Low Jack has been responsible for some of the most intense, interesting and downright odd electronic music of recent times. Given this impressive record, it's unsurprising that Modern Love has snapped up Lighthouse Stories, his third full-length. Interestingly, it sees him move away from the dystopian, post-apocalyptic techno sound he's become famous for, instead delivering a set that mirrors the dark-and-light, slow-and-fast hybrid frequently showcased on Black Zone Myth Chant releases. Like that project, the music on Lighthouse Stories is damn near impossible to pigeonhole, sitting somewhere between uncomfortable intensity and exotic beauty.

Review: Whittaker has played an integral role in Modern Love's rise over the past decade, initially as part of Pendle Coven, Whittaker has moved on to produce solo as MLZ and HATE before working with Andy Stott as Millie & Andrea; in recent years he's been most notable for more experimental fare with his work as one half of hauntological duo Demdike Stare with Sean Canty. His debut solo album, entitled Faint Hearted - released simply under his first name, Miles - looks to be an encapsulation of his wide ranging tastes as a DJ and producer, and is described by the label as "an exposition of Miles' love of electronic music in all its shapes, harnessing his fidgety production style into one expansive, restless set of tracks". "Lebensform" is described as a "looped jungle mutation" while "Sense Data" supposedly comes across like "a lost Move D production from the classic Studio Pankow era"; some decidedly avant-garde material also features in the form of "Archaic Thought Pattern I" which apparently sounds like "Aphex Twin's Donkey Rhubarb EP rebuilt by Mika Vainio". A bracing encapsulation of one the UK's most interesting electronic artists.

Review: Although now better known for their respective solo work, and the latter's involvement with Sean Canty as Demdike Stare, Andy Stott (pictured above) and Miles Whittaker's Millie & Andrea project stands as one of Modern Love's more unique projects. Releasing a string of 12? singles on Modern Love sub-label Daphne from 2008-2010, the duo's music under the name experimented with various combinations of 2-step, jungle, grime, dub techno and footwork across five 12? singles. Now they return with Drop the Vowels, which makes complete sense given underground music's renewed fascination with all things revolving around the hardcore continuum. Just as wide ranging as previous material, with the LP covers the kind of tectonic mood pieces and wiry noise techno as Stott and Whittaker's recent solo material whilst delivering some of the most straight-up dancefloor material Modern Love has put out in years. Without doubt one of the albums of the year.

Review: On Luxury Problems, Mancunian producer Andy Stott builds on the knackered house and techno sound showcased in last year's brace of brilliance, Passed Me By and We Stay Together. The album will contain eight tracks recorded in the last 12 months, with five of the songs featuring vocals from his old piano teacher who Stott hadn't seen since he was a teenager in 1996, with the opening track "Numb" seeing her looped and layered vocals exuding a cinematic quality. The paranoid, dense, slow-moving qualities that Stott has made his signature remain, but they've been toyed with and manipulated, and the vocal elements feel like a calculated gamble - one that has truly paid off. Even for a CD release Modern Love go all out on presentation too, with Luxury Problems arriving in a an oversized 6-panel digifile. Highly recommended.

Review: ** Repress Alert! Modern Love issue a much requested repress of Andy Stott's amazing Passing Me By and it's on clear emerald vinyl ** British dub-techno producer Andy Stott returns to the production fold with this excellent double pack entitled Passed Me By. Although strictly a double EP rather than an album, there's enough here to fill the void left since the last Stott long player, Merciless. Housed in artwork that perfectly encapsulates the mood of the music within, Stott opens with the disturbed paranoia of "Signature" and the brilliant "New Ground", which utilises a drowned-out vocal snippet that immediately brings to mind the work of Actress. The grumbling dub of "North To South" contrasts neatly with "Intermittent", in which rasping drum hits form the rhythmic pulse, allowing another ethereal vocal to float over the top. The second 12" takes on an even darker hue; with the raw drum hits of "Dark Details", terrifying drone of "Execution" and ghostly atmospherics of the title track rounding off this most stunning release.

Faith In Strangers, that album's belated follow-up, is similarly minded. Peppered with audible references to his many inspirations - field recordings, found sounds, dub techno, IDM, ambient, post-dubstep and trip-hop, in particular - it's a set that quietly drifts between sludgy dreaminess and pin-sharp late night horror. As such, it's an inspired set, with Stott's use of odd instrumentation and the evocative vocals of Alison Skidmore significantly enhancing the experience.

Batillus Concrete (Andy Scott remix)
Review: While Andy Stott may be known for taking the path less travelled, not least on his most recent output, this should be a curveball release even to his keenest followers. Batillus are a doom metal band whose "Concrete" track appeared on the Concrete Sustain LP from earlier in the year. In Stott's hands the original becomes a tense mess of red-lining synth drones, degenerating kicks falling in a slow lurch and beyond the grave vocals made even scarier. It's as apocalyptic as you would expect from the mind that gave us the Passed Me By record, but it goes even further into sonic abrasion and uneasy ambience in keeping with the source material.

Review: **Repress Action! Now available in transparent gold vinyl, Modern Love come through with a long overdue repress of Andy Stott's We Stay Together, the follow up to his incredible reinvention on Passed Me By** Opening with the beatless "Submission", a Fennesz style wash of recorded waves subjected to crushing compression, he moves into the 100bpm territory of "Posers" which concentrates on a roughly treated, barely there vocal sample, and "Bad Wires", which slowly disorientates the listener with its sludgy bass loop and fizzing atmosphere. Meanwhile "We Stay Together" opts for a cleaner atmosphere with demonic undertones, whilst "Cherry Eye" offers the faintest sceptre of melody in a cavernous backdrop. Finally "Cracked" hypnotises with its metallic textures and undercurrent of acid which gurgles beneath. For anyone who considers themselves even remotely adventurous in their techno tastes, We Stay Together is essential.

Too Many Voices (6:08)
Review: Andy Stott rarely gets it wrong. To date, he's release a trio of fine full-lengths on Modern Love, each of which has arrived perfectly formed. It's a similar story on fourth album Too Many Voices. Rich, spacious and melodious, it draws on both classic and contemporary sounds, channeling Yellow Magic Orchestra, James Blake, Boards Of Canada, Autechre and clap-happy drum machine funk, before twisting these varied inspirations into thrilling new shapes. For all the high-minded experimentalism, Stott's greatest gift is an ability to create music that's inspired and entertaining, achieving a balance between boundary-pushing and old-fashioned melodiousness. When he gets it right, as on Too Many Voices, few can really compete.

Review: Mancunian producer Andy Stott laid down his trademark knackered house and techno sound with this album, Luxury Problems. It was made from eight tracks recorded over 12 months, with five of the songs featuring vocals from his old piano teacher who Stott hadn't seen since he was a teenager in 1996. The whole thing now gets a welcome reissue as one of the best in his discography. The opening track 'Numb' has the vocalists looped and layered vocals exuding a cinematic quality. The paranoid, dense, slow-moving qualities that Stott has made his signature remain, but they've been toyed with and manipulated, and the vocal elements feel like a calculated gamble - one that has truly paid off.

Review: By the time Faith In Strangers came about, Manchester underground electronic doyen Andy Stott already had an enviable reputation as producer of intelligent synthesised sounds that defy easy categorisation. Describing his process as akin to a scientist creating compounds by working out their formulas, the best way to define his music is simply 'futurism', although that in itself is reductive and vague.
At various points working in and around disfigured interpretations of techno, house, industrial, ambient, and grime, he simultaneously reflects the unpolished concrete of his hometown, and its seemingly limitless ability to keep pushing forward. On Faith, his celebrated fourth studio album, he's on exceptional form, delivering tracks that are emotional, haunting, moody, sophisticated, immersive, and incredibly complex.

Review: All hail the return of Andy Stott to Modern Love. Continuing the thread he's been weaving since the seismic "Passed Me By", Stott locks into his slow and sinewy sound world and drags us with him. With tones and textures that bend and flex around disheveled beats far beyond anyone else's musical vernacular, there really is no one doing it like this guy right now. You might hear shards of familiarity trying desperately to break through, and there is certainly a very human heart at the core of this music, but there's always something utterly other-worldly shrouded in this music, and that's precisely why it's so compelling. Essential stuff, once again.

About To Enter A Strange New Period
Review: Man of many pseudonyms (15 and counting) James Leyland Kirby returns to one of his lesser known projects, The Stranger, for a typically unsettling trip into drone territory on Modern Love. Built around strange samples, field recordings and curious use of clattering live percussion (see the blacksmith ambient jazz of "We Scarcely See Sunlight"), Watching Dead Empires in Decay is like the unofficial soundtrack to Britain's continued decline. Certainly, its woozy electronics and unsettling melodies evoke mental images of late night walks through desolate urban wasterlands. Though bleak in outlook, there are some particularly emotion-rich moments, not least the superb, mournful "Providence or Fate".

Review: Modern Love's newest release comes from British beatmaker Zomby, who has reached into his archives to unearth a long lost album nearly a decade after its completion. Said to be recorded between two weeks around 2008-2009, the Mercury's Rainbow LP sees the London based producer interpreting grime innovator Wiley's Eskibeat productions, which played an instrumental role in the genre's formation. It features the 4AD/Hyperdub affiliated artist utilising intricately hand-programmed arpeggios, 'sliding Triton squares' and post-garage drum patterns. On a conceptual level, it uses theories of colour and its relation to the sonic chromatic spectrum - the circle of fifths.
