Review: Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou was an Ethiopian nun known for her piano playing and musical compositions. She sang for Haile Selassie though later retreated from the world and lived barefoot n a monastery where she worked on perfecting her blues sound. She became known as the honky tonk nun and levied well into her 90s. This reissue of her self titled album shows off her unique sound which started with her first violin recital at the age of ten and went on to include piano albums being released with all profits going to benefit orphaned children in Ethiopia. What a woman.

Review: Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou is an Ethiopian nun known for her unique solo piano playing. For three decades she lived a reclusive life with only rare performances, including one at the Jewish Community Center in Washington, D.C. in 2008. Featured here are recordings sourced from the '60s of her truly captivating performances and are deservedly reissued by the Portland, Oregon based Mississippi/Little Axe Records. Featured here are all original compositions available for the first time on vinyl beyond the original early editions, said to be near impossible to find.

Review: We were first alerted to the wonderful musical universe of Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou back in August when her self-titled album was reissued on this label. We learned that Emahoy was an Ethiopian nun known for her piano playing and musical compositions as well as for singing for Haile Selassie. She then became something of a recluse though spent time perfecting her blues. Her music sales have been used to fund orphaned children in Ethiopia. Jerusalem is the first archival release of her music since 2006 when she was introduced to the world.

Review: ***Reissued for the first time—DEAD MOON’s first record! Originally released in 1988. Dead Moon were a band that existed outside of the
constraints that time and style usually impose on artists. An authentic mix of psychedelic rock, punk, blues, country, and every other American
music worth a damn. This LP features all time classics such as "Graveyard" ( A 13th Floor Elevators type vibrating psychedelic song), "Don''t Burn
The Fires" and "I Hate The Blues.” Lo-fi as hell. Remastered from the original tapes. We are very proud to make this LP available on vinyl once
more.

Review: The first vocal album by beloved Ethiopian nun, composer, and pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, Souvenirs is a profound and deeply moving home collection of cassette recordings made amidst political upheaval and turmoil. These are songs of wisdom, loss, mourning, and exile, sung directly into a boombox and accompanied by Emahoy's unmistakable piano. Though written and recorded while still living at her family's home in Addis Ababa, Emahoy sings of the heartache of leaving her beloved Ethiopia, a reflection on the 1974 revolution and ensuing Red Terror in her homeland, and a presentiment of her future exile in Jerusalem. Rich with the sound of birds outside the window, the creak of the piano bench, the thump of Emahoy's finger on the record button, they create a sense of place, of being near the artist while she records. Emahoy's lyrics, sung in Amharic, are poetic and heavy with the weight of exile; she dreamt of releasing this music to a larger audience before her passing in March of 2023, so in her honour, Mississippi present this album in collaboration with her family now, in what would have been her 100th year.

Review: Kiko Kids Jazz created a truly unique sound after forming in the mid-1950s. They were at the heart of the explosion of Tanzanian talent that happened in the guitar scene in the years leading up to the country's independence. The warm voice of Salim Zahoro leads most tunes, with his electric mandolin underneath and acoustic takes on Cuban Son, mixed with the rhythms of their home town of Tabora, plus the emerging dance sounds of bands in Dar Es Salaam and Nairobi. Poetic lyrics and tranquil sounds transport you to their landscape and wash over you in a soothingly pleasant fashion.

Review: "The message was clear: this was not necessarily music for dancing - even though the rhythms were compelling enough. This was music for the thinkers." When it came to the music of Celestine Ukwu, from where was this message communicated? In his case, it was the coalescing of his fashion sense and performance style, which combined unorthodox dress for highlife musicians - turtlenecks and drab coats - with a polyrhythm-focused, less intense highlife sound. With his bands, most notably The Philosophers National, Ukwu pioneered a more pensive and slow-burning version of the West African style, earning his place in musical history and this compilation of his greatest works.

Review: Mississippi have unearthed a lost classic from what is widely considered Ethiopia's 'golden age' of music before an authoritarian crackdown on arts and culture in the 70s. Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret perform a captivating duet over the distinctive sound of Ethic jazz - fans of Mulatu Astatke will instantly find themselves on familiar ground here, but it's the singers' voices which truly shine. While Beauties was a hit upon release, it was soon quashed by the Derg regime, and has since been out of print. It's been carefully remastered and presented with its stunning artwork intact - a true gem for anyone enthralled with the unique sound incubated in Ethiopia in the mid-20th Century.

Review: It's amazing to think the now-legendary Fred Cole and his Weeds comrades were forced to change their band name for fear of marijuana references. Rising to prominence in the mid-late-1960s, long before the main man would find himself on the honorary list of garage rock greats (not that this period didn't contribute to that), management and labels deemed it a much better idea to release his music under The Lollipop Shoppe, which is how Just Colour saw the light of day.
One quick listen proves how unsuitable that decision was, with the contents of this highly sought after boxset anything but the bubblegum those misguided but powerful minds wanted to cash in on. Presented with two reconfigured 7" singles alongside the full album - the idea being to give fans all the essential cuts in one - it's a stunning way to remember we should never, or rarely, listen to The Industry.

Review: Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff is a drum collective from Dental that has been, nay all accounts, tearing up their local nightlife scene in Dakar. An array of 14 different percussive instruments plus horns, winds, balafon and accordion all back the Senegalese poet Djiby Ly as they coo up spiritually infused polyrhythms, the energy of Fela's orchestras and the grooves of Tony Allen. Though steeped in ancient rituals and tradition, there is plenty modern thinking on display here in a collection of vital, exciting music that is very much alive with purpose as well as groove.

Review: Souvenirs is the first vocal album from Ethiopian nun, composer and pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. It was recorded between 1977 and 1985 in a lo-fi setup in her family home in Addis Ababa shortly before she was exiled to Jerusalem. Playing the piano and singing through a boom box, Gebru captured the solemn mood of the time as she faced the prospect of leaving her homeland to escape the upheaval brought about the 1974 revolution in Ethiopia. Her playing fuses Western classical with Ethiopian traditional and Orthodox music, while her Amharic lyrics touch on the tumultuous situation she found herself in, in profoundly poetic ways. The accompanying 16-page booklet offers translations of these words, so the message can land for listeners beyond the powerful impact of the recordings themselves.

Review: Reissued in the aftermath of her passing away in 2023, Souvenirs is probably the best-known album by Ethiopian legend Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, whose morphing from nun to composer, pianist and vocalist tracks an exquisitely bleak but powerful history. The first album to feature her own voice, the album was written and recorded at her family home in Addis Ababa, and deals in personal themes of loss, homesickness and transience, reflecting on Emahoy's experiences of the turmoil of the 1976 Red Terror in Ethiopia, in which the provisional Derg military dictatorship violently suppressed the rise of other competing revolutionary militia groups, and in so doing caused mass upheavals and migrations. With lyrics sung in Amharic and overlaid against uniquely mournful DIY instrumentations, Mississippi's CD reissue reminds us of its heart-warmer status, betraying Emahoy's deep familial fidelity and integrity.

Review: Rail Band are one of the most legendary bands in Malian musical history, and like all great legends their greatest moment was fleeting. This incredibly heavy, soulful and hard-grooving record was released in 1973, when the official orchestra of the Malian State Railway decided to enter the studio and lay down their potent blend of Western funk and surf, Mande tradition and Afro-Cuban percussion. The band was led by trumpet and sax player Tidiani Kone and Djelimady Tounkara on guitar, but in the iteration captured on this album they also featured future stars Salif Keita and Mory Kante on vocals. Shortly after, Keita and Kante eloped to embark on hugely successful solo careers, but for a brief moment in 1973 one of the greatest African guitar bands of all time created a perfect storm of West African storytelling and smoking hot grooves.

Review: Rail Band's self-titled record is one of the greatest, heaviest, and most sought-after guitar records from 1970s West Africa, available on vinyl for the first time in over a decade. Of humble origin, the utilitarian name Rail Band was the christening nom de plume lent to the official orchestra of Mali's state railway. Though they began as hired hands, their unique approach and playstyle - characterised by American funk, jazz and Afro-Cuban influences - helped break the Malian traditional musical mould. Thus, Rail Band took on an autonomy of their own, one which would be continually assured by the sax and trumpet playing of Tidiani Kone, the jingling guitar of Djelimady Tounkara, and the vocal diving-flights of Salif Keita and Mory Kante. Now reissued by Mississippi, this high-quality vinyl edition of their debut record comes in either black or translucent blue - take your pick.
