Review: In so many ways, "Making A New World" has been an age coming. A full century, in fact. The seventh album from Peter and David Brewis' rightly lauded outfit is their most ambitious, with the talented craftsmen forsaking the contemporaneous commentary present throughout much of their oeuvre in favour of adopting the position of historic documenters. Confused? No worries, let's cut to the kind of direct chase suited to their North East English roots. A highly political work, the record attempts to explain the shocking state of today's planet - and civilisation - by tracing problems back to World War I. And it makes a big impression in doing so. Opening with the field recording-esque "Sound Ranging", and then the startlingly tender piano solo "Silence/After The Fact", it's not long before the art-pop-prog starts to properly unfold, spanning a fittingly huge 19 tracks to close on the sinister-sounding and resoundingly unsettling "An Independent State". Marvellous stuff.

Review: The fourth album from this effervescent Brighton-born institution marks something of a change of direction; this time around, band mastermind Ian Parton wrote, performed and produced the entire thing, and the emphasis for 'The Scene Between' slides towards pure pop, sidelining much of the plunderphonic sampling and genre-mashing of yore in favour of a sunny and ever-uplifting barrage of righteousness. What's more, rather than the well-known guest artists he employed last time around, Parton ensures freshness here brings in previously unknown vocalists, and the resultant noisy, ebullient melange is a reinvention that only focuses on the positivity always at the heart of this outfit.

Review: On her fifth solo album, singer and songwriter Jesca Hoop teams up with UK producer John Parish, best known for his work with singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. "Stonechild" marks a slight sonic seachange here with the American arguably delivering her quietest, most contemplative studio work yet. Cryptic confessionals, fabled tales and spiritual expression are just some of the more subdued themes that come up across these 11 songs, and with environmental concerns and emotional harmonies both voiced through vocals and guitars, Jesca Hoop lacks no fear in chronicling her take of exploring the depths of one's own abyss.

Review: It's not that easy to put your finger on Mush's sound. At times frenetic without being intense, at other moments locked in a sweaty funk, the Leeds outfit certainly seem at home on the ever-reliable Memphis Industries label. Those looking for immediate guitar hooks set in a lo-fi-ish landscape should be in their element.

There's also more than a hint at where they're coming from politically, charting the time of turmoil their native Britain is stuck in on fare such as "Hey Gammonhead!". Moving past the dreaded B-word, the likes of "Existential Dread" almost positions them in a skate-blues guise, the hugely topical "Gig Economy" conjures the propulsive work rate of anyone who has to get to their next task fast in order to make ends meet, while "No Signal In The Paddock" plays with rhythm and time effectively. A rock album very much of our moment in history.

Review: One in the eye for anyone who thought trip hop had nothing more to say, the fifth album from Minneapolis' Polica conjures audible shadows that seem to creep out from the tracks themselves. Listener immersed in a pared-back but deep audio realm packed with dubby reverb and solid, stepping drums. Throw in Channy Leaneagh's ever-spectacular vocal prowess, her words beautiful but broken, and you've got a genre masterclass.

Or at lest you do on numbers such as dark opener 'Driving', 'Fold Up' and its combination of tracking tempo and surreal echoes of menacing noise, or 'Feel Life''s lush, submersed lilting low ends. Elsewhere things emerge into poppier notes, 'Forget Me Now' is heartfelt balladry at its best, 'Sea Without Blue' is an icy choral joy, 'Steady' would sound at home on any collection of acoustic odes to loss and recovery, if it weren't for the occasional bleep, sample and electric guitar refrain.

Review: It's been just over a decade since Rozi Plain debuted with her laid back, summery and melancholic, singer-songwriting sound. "What A Boost" finds a release through North London label Memphis Industries and this fifth studio LP sees the artist go bass heavy on tracks like album opener "Inner Circle", with the slightest of electronic music production ethics making themselves known throughout the LP. Across the record, programmed kick drums are subtle and vocal loops creative, while syncopated jazz beats, sub-sonic grooves and skittering, brushy snares make for a unique take on solo vocalist, folk-inspired, new age sounds. Far from a record that feels as though it was recorded in a bedroom, Rozi Plain's lo-fi sonic only adds to the calming, melancholic malaise of her soulful style.

Review: Who remembers Joel Wastberg aka sir Was' 2017 LP, "Digging A Tunnel"? It was one of those albums that achieved cult status not just because of its star's unarguable talent, but its means of production. Recorded close enough to a train line to feel the locomotives shaking the studio itself, it had to be loud, daring and striking to drown out the passing carriages. "Holding On To A Dream" is an altogether quieter affair because the two years between then and now have afforded our man luxuries like a real place to refine his wares. And refine them he has. "No Giving Up" is smooth pop perfection. "The Sun Will Shine" takes us closer to soul, while "Deployed" emphasises electronics to create something closer to early-MGMT's intimate moments than MGMT seem capable of these days - Little "does-no-wrong" Dragon's guest appearance accentuating the notion that this is exquisitely crafted stuff, and far from by numbers.

Review: A vibrant and zesty art-rock quartet from Toronto, Weaves have made a debut that brims with both intent and good old-fashioned fun, a demolition derby of punk-tinged brio and candysweet pop suss. The frenetic air of sonic brinksmanship - with restless rhythms and abrasive guitar scree holding court - might seem at odds with the colourful melodies herein, but Weaves appear to have the nous to make both spark off each other to provide a tonic as likely to appeal to fans of Romeo Void, Erase Errata or Patti Smith alike. Most importantly, in an indie milieu increasingly failling prey to rock classicism, this is band with quirky character and incandescent chutzpah to burn.

Review: Following the precursing release of a Memphis Industries 7" last year by You Tell Me, Peter Brewis (Field Music) and Admiral Fallow member Sarah Hayes finally present their debut self-titled record of their new collaboration. Said to be an album taking on themes of 'expectations and people's individual ways of navigating' them, this record presents a bold, folky and big band trundle through rolling pasture of horns, strings and powerful pop rock and disco dance! Both artists distinct styles come together here like a birthday party going off and the pair's vocal interplay stands out tremendously among a huge assortment of highly, well-produced instrumentation that makes you feel like your somewhere between 1969 and 1992. Where were you?
