Lyra (180 gram vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: MEANDER 025. Rel: 13 Feb 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Atralux (11:49)
  2. Phylae (7:35)
  3. Lyra (6:59)
  4. Vega (13:39)
  5. Myths (7:26)
  6. Cabinet Of Mirrors (8:02)
Review: David Koch, better known as Dewalta has gradually grown his Berlin-based Meander label into one of the most respected names in minimal techno, and production wise he has really hit his stride in recent years. Testament to this is his new double opus Lyra, with the second part being a collection of ambient productions that will launch the new Horizons sublabel. In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the Lyre of Orpheus, given to Apollo, which is said to be the first music instrument ever made. The dusty and understated techno reductions that he similarly explores with studio pal Mike Shannon are evident on the album, with highlights such as "Atralux" and "Myths". Things get fully cavernous and glacial on chilling dub techno journeys such as the title track, and broadening the album's groove diversity are deep, dreamy and ethereal numbers (well suited to the afterhours) such as the evocative closer "Cabinet Of Mirrors". One of 2019's most highly anticipated albums and worth the wait.

Lyra Pi (180 gram vinyl 12" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: MEANDER 026PI. Rel: 13 Feb 19
Experimental/Electronic
  1. North Star (14:08)
  2. Fugacity (7:56)
  3. Lyra (8:16)
  4. Pulses (9:34)
  5. Photons (5:52)
Review: Meander boss David Koch AKA DeWalta has been a busy boy of late. Hot on the heels of his well received "Lyra" album comes "Lyra Pi", an expansive EP that's apparently meant to be a "partner piece" (or, as some in the Juno office called it, "an encore to the album"). Intriguingly, it sees him dispense with beats altogether; instead, he offers up a quintet of spacey, otherworldly ambient and experimental electronic cuts of the highest order. Highlights include the unsettling, wayward synthesizer arpeggio lines of "Fugacity", the dub techno style deep space hypnotism of "Lyra Pi", the droning darkness and buzzing, end-of-days electronics of "Pulses", and the fluid bliss of mind-altering closing cut "Photons".

Dark Moon EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 027. Rel: 22 May 19
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Dark Moon (6:44)
  2. The Ninth Cloud (7:30)
  3. Solaris (7:29)
  4. Scarlet Heaven (7:21)
Review: Dewalta has been doing a fine job of curating his respected Meander imprint of late, with some stunning releases by the brightest stars in the minimal techno scene at present. Following up some quality EPs by newcomers like Sublee and Alci, we've got a stunning release by Italian virtuoso Christopher Ledger - who has carved his own distinct sonic path over the last few years with releases on Brouqade, Animae and Ada Kaleh. "Dark Moon EP" consolidates many of his sonic aesthetics on this 4-tracker: the moody and intoxicating title track with its UKG influence, to the straight up hypnotic tech house of "The Ninth Cloud" (which will mix in perfectly with most of the label's back catalogue), closing with the emotive breakbeat IDM of "Scarlet Heaven" which calls to mind a similar vibe as explored on his recent 'MPC Sketches' EP.
