Review: A new early cornerstone for Velvet Underground fanatics, 'Words And Music May 1965' is Lou Reed in his earliest incarnation, spanning some of the artist's earliest-known recordings. Demo versions of 'Heroin' and 'Pale Blue Eyes' both make appearances, while seven further completely unreleased and unheard songs also come to fruition. The earliest is a doo-wop serenade recorded in 1958, when Reed was just sixteen years old.

Review: Light In The Attic devoted a fair wedge of energy to reissuing the work of Betty Davis, surely one of the greatest of all the 70s funk divas. More than stepping up to the likes of Ruth Copeland and Lyn Collins, Davis went her own way and developed her own smouldering sound. Her confidence might well have been what posed such a threat to the status quo of the music industry at the time, and it positively leaps out of her seminal 1974 album They Say I'm Different. The reissue has been in need of a repress for some time, and its comes intact with a full 20-page booklet which takes you into the heart of the album and Davis' incredible, but all too short-lived legacy.

Review: Seattle label Light In The Attic Records is proud to present a reissue of material from Nancy Sinatra's most prolific period between 1965-1976, with 23 tracks including her revered collaborations with Lee Hazlewood. Sinatra's performance of 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'' became her signature tune. The pair began a three year run of successful recordings, with 'Sugar Town,' 'Some Velvet Morning,', 'Summer Wine' as well as the James Bond theme 'You Only Live Twice' being just a few. She also worked with songwriter Mac Davis, producer Lenny Waronker and arranger/producer Billy Strange on the album.

Review: Now that's what we call an album title 2021. As the name implies, we're skirting the edges of 1980s Japanese pop, opting to explore the strange, sci-fi hued, traditionally rooted noises that weren't necessarily dominant in the Far East country at that time, but certainly found favour with more explorative listeners. And it's not hard to hear why.

Tracks like 'Days Man' by Yoshio Ojima could work well in a slo-mo house or electronica set today. While preceding effort 'Hikari No Ito Kin No Ito' from Mishio Ogawa is like a strangely innocent hybrid of lullaby and pop song. Elsewhere, the twinkling synths and wet snare hits of Naomi Asai's 'Yakan Hikou' further accentuate the surrealism running through so much of what is here. One for the trophy cabinet, collectors take note (and form a queue).

Review: U.S label Light In The Attic has previously served up compilations exploring various Japanese takes on Western music, most notably folk, rock, ambient and new age. Here they switch tack, curating a brilliant double-album set that showcases the best Japanese synth-pop, AOR and boogie recorded between 1976 and '86. The quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, from the blue-eyed-soul breeze of Taeko Ohnuki's "Kusuri Wo Takusan" and the Chaz Jankel-meets-Thompson Twins style throb of Haruomi Hosono's "Sports Men", to the talkbox-sporting late night AOR-pop flex's Hiroshi Satoh's "Say Goodbye" and the glistening, Latin-influenced jazz-funk brilliance of Masayoshi Takanaka's steel pan-sporting "Bamboo Vender".

Review: As the third installment brings attention back on this crucial series, Light In The Attic are running a repress of their second voyage into the plentiful realm of Japanese city pop - another extended cruise through impossibly slick '70s and '80s groovers with that golden studio sound. There's sultry slinkers like Eiichi Ohtaki and sensual funk from Kimiko Kasai on "Vibration (Love Celebration)". Watch out for the heavy bass and subtle synth inflections of Yu Imai's incredible "Kindaichi Kosuke Nishi E Iku" and the impossibly catchy whistlealong 'Hot Sand' by Piper. It's not a competition, but if you crave that US AOR sound, it might just be that the Japanese did it better.

Review: Light In The Attic made clear they were in for the long haul when opening up on Nancy Sinatra's musical legacy, and of course a significant part of that is her work with Lee Hazlewood. Presented as another part of this committed effort to bring overdue credit to Sinatra's work, we're treated to the first ever vinyl reissue of Sinatra and Hazlewood's 1972 album Nancy & Lee Again. There is just so much gold bedded into these songs, not least the Dolly Parton-penned 'Down From Dover' and the dreamy, psychedelic lilt of 'Tippy Toes', and there's even two bonus tracks in the form of 'Machine Gun Kelly' and 'Think I'm Coming Down'.

Review: Since Light In The Attic embarked on its comprehensive Nancy Sinatra Archival Series, it has done wondrous justice to the towering career of the American popular singer. But the work isn't done yet, and the latest chipping-away at the cinderblock comes in the form of a reissue (surprisingly not ever reissued before) of Nancy & Lee Again, her second trailblazing duet album with Lee Hazlewood. Haunting, nostalgic and full of sunned takes on a marriage, splits, lost jobs and general social tumult - the stories are narrated by Hazlewood in his best gruff voice - the overall tone of this album could be said to be predictive of shoegaze, as it is generously doused in reverb, but the similarity ends there. Sinatra's stark Americana influences are most obvious; they shine through on the use of sublime slide guitar ('Did You Ever'), skiffling ¾ metres, and twangy banjo fingerstylings.

Review: Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's monumental 1968 duet album gets a definitive reissue via Light In The Attic, harkening back to a time when the crossover between Americana, pop and country worked in a much simpler style. Now once again coming back to stereo, they show off a powerful duetting synergy through classic bits like 'Lady Bird', 'Sundown, Sundown' and 'Elusive Dreams'. This one also contains a new gatefold jacket, and comes with an array of exclusive content, including a brand new interview.

Review: Reissued again (following an initial 2009 run) via Light In The Attic, It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You The Best is the debut album by American folk blues musician Karen Dalton, originally released in 1969 by Capitol Records. The Native American singer made her mark on the seventies folk scene through a distinctly yearning sound, evoked through an unmistakable, tremolo'ing alto. On the album, her voice, exemplary of this, effortlessly pokes out from each quiet miasma of guitar, a template soon to be fleshed out by latter-day chart-toppers such as Lacy J. Dalton (whose name is a tribute) and Bob Dylan. Covering classics by Lead Belly, Fred Neil, and Tim Hardin, this is tender, one-of-a-kind country folk, with this edition coming as an all-analog version featuring remastered audio from the original Capitol masters.

Review: Hold tight all serious funk heads, you won't want to miss this one. Betty Davis is finally getting her dues as a true funk pioneer, but there are still dimensions to her brief and brilliant music career which have taken their time to reach our ears. After three knockout LPs she laid down a fourth in a rural Louisiana studio with her band Funk House, but it was shelved by the label and remained in obscurity for some 30 years. Finally, Light In The Attic are giving Is It Love Or Desire the release it deserves, capturing Davis at her rawest and packing the unfiltered funk in with rare photos, archival material and all the good stuff in between.

Review: Betty Davis was a true firebrand of soul who needs more recognition than she gets, and that's where Light In The Attic came in with their reissue campaign around 2009. Amongst some of Davis' other classic albums from the mid-70s, the label also helped unearth this previously unreleased gem of truly next level funk which shows Davis at her sensuous, uncompromising best. There's a grittiness to the likes of 'It's So Good' which lays bare the raw talent at the heart of Davis' work with her band Funk House. The idea the label shelved it is unfathomable, and that no doubt had a hand in curtailing Davis' career, but at the very least the music can get the recognition it deserves now.

Review: Karen Dalton is one of the most mysterious and enigmatic but also influential artists of her time. Her 1971 album In My Own Time is a real masterpiece that Light In The Attic now presented on newly mastered vinyl. It was originally recorded over a six month time frame at Bearsville and was crafted by producer and musician Harvey Brooks, a key figure in rock-jazz having worked on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It's a wild and vivid record with walking basslines and manic melodies topped off with the expressive vocals.

The Oklahoma singer-songwriter's debut is technically a country-folk-blues covers album, but Dalton's signature vocal style and distinct manner of banjo playing renders each song unique. Review: Stone Flower was a little-known, short-lived record label licensed exclusively to Sly Stone himself. It produced but four singles in the period 1970-74, and beyond that, saw to a short run of LPs from the likes of Gladys Knight, Herbie Mann and Eddie Jefferson. However, thanks to a series of retakes and bonus material, LITA were able to reproduce this compilation; a compendium of all the best music the label had to offer, with choice bits from Joe Hicks, Sly, Little Sister and 6ix in tow.

Review: Light In The Attic's continued series of Lou Reed reissues follows up the outstanding Words and Music, May 1965 with this wholly different side to the legendary singer-songwriter. As a devoted student of Tai Chi, Reed composed some ambient pieces for his own personal use while practicing. It was only as friends started to ask for copies that he decided to round the project out and present it as his last solo album - in his own words, "I then wrote two more pieces with the same intent: to relax the body, mind, and spirit and facilitate meditation." As well as the music, remastered and pressed onto double vinyl, there's bonus reading material in the form of interviews with people close to Reed in the context of his Tai Chi, yoga and meditation practice.

Review: Beyond his most famous work in The Velvet Underground and as a solo rock artist, Lou Reed lived many other lives in and outside of music. While he's not readily recognised as an ambient artist, his early foray into Metal Machine Music proved he was more than capable of leaving traditional song structures behind.
