  1. Superior Conjunction (9:27)
  2. Arpadia (8:18)
  3. The Train Of Fantastic (feat Fantastic Twins) (11:58)
Review: After a relatively quiet 2016, Marvin and Guy seemed to have stepped up a level in 2017. Super Conjunction is undoubtedly one of their strongest releases to date, with the brilliant title track - a mid-tempo fusion of spacey arpeggio lines, restless TB-303 psychedelia, blissful breakdowns and hypnotic drum machine hits - impressively setting the tone. The track that follows, the melancholic Italo-disco drug-chug of "Arpadia" is quietly impressive too, but pales in comparison with epic flipside "The Train of Fantastic". Featuring contributions from occasional Optimo Music sorts the Fantastic Twins, the track seems to build in waves of 12 mesmerizing minutes, as Marvin & Guy pepper another Italo-style arpeggio groove with tumbling pianos, positive chord progressions and stylish spoken word vocals.

Kalacol EP (12")
Cat: LAD 032. Rel: 23 Oct 17
Deep House
  1. Kalacol (feat Yuli Vainshtein) (6:53)
  2. Vego Gam (6:24)
  3. Round (7:48)
  4. Sami (4:35)
Review: By their usual standards, prolific Tel Aviv twosome Red Axes has enjoyed a relatively quiet year. In fact, this four-track EP on Life & Death contains their first original material of 2017. As usual, it's an eccentric collection of tracks. Compare, for example, the cowbell-rich, wonky house hustle of chiming opener "Calacol", which manages to be both funky and weird, and "Vego Gam", where surf guitars and alien synth lines surf an eccentric, post-punk house groove. The dancefloor eclecticism continues on the flip, where the Italo-disco/dub disco fusion of "Round" makes way for the undulating tropical drums, pots-and-pans melodies and glassy-eyed vocal snippets of "Sami".

Review: Manfredi Romano aka DJ Tennis grew up touring/managing punk bands and organising leftfield music events in his native Italy, before launching his majorly successful Life and Death imprint back in 2010. It has gone on to become one of the most widely embraced and respected house/techno labels, launching several acts including fellow countrymen Tale Of Us and Mind Against: who are now at the peak of their careers. For the first instalment in a new series, DJ Tennis gives unlimited freedom to some of his most trusted contemporaries, enabling them to display their hidden talents as composers. Said to have been gathered from a long-aborted film, this collection of tracks represent another stage in this much celebrated label's evolution. Highlights include Nick Lapien aka Artfekt's "Magnetic Midnight" showing his impeccable flair for trance induction, London based retrovert Black Merlin turns in a deep hypnotic techno cut "OPI" while more familiar household names such as Simian Mobile Disco appear (with the mesmerising freeform synth experiment of "Hades Rocket") and Miami's Danny Daze with the trip-hop themed "Orb".
