Review: Cecile Schott's cult conceptual classic from 2006 Colleen Et es Boites A Musique was commissioned by France Culture's Atelier De Creation Radiophonique as a one-off broadcast. Using almost exclusively the tones and textures of music boxes, Cecile has created a wholly unique music universe that's at once familiar and comforting in an almost dreamlike way yet alluring and alien in its experimental layers and creative approach to form. With echoes of familiar ditties and stretched aesthetics that get really far-out and perplexing, this really is a unique piece of contemporary experimental composition. Available for the first time on vinyl, and limited to 750 Record Store Day, this won't hang around.

Review: If you missed The Comet is Coming's brilliant debut album, Channel The Spirits, first time around, help is at hand. Happily, the Leaf label has decided to reissue the Mercury Music Prize nominated album, expanding it to two discs via the addition of 2015's similarly sublime Prophecy EP and a trio of previously unheard wig-outs. The genius of the London combo's music lies in their unique and eccentric approach to musical fusion. While their roots lie in fusing spiritual jazz and freaky psychedelic rock, keen listeners will hear a myriad of other influences and inspirations seeping into their distinctive instrumental compositions, from spiraling electronica, Afrobeat and skewed funk, to ambient, dub, drum and bass, Roots Manuva and low-slung industrial funk.

Review: Hailing from London yet taking their influences from considerably further afield, Melt Yourself Down seem hell bent on giving the word 'supergroup' a good name - formed initially by Acoustic Ladyland saxophonist Pete Wareham and now including luminaries from outfits like Sons Of Kemet and Transglobal Underground, this second album's vibrant sound builds on the vicious party stylings of their debut to encompass incandescent free jazz, incendiary punk-funk, Afrobeat and a myriad other extrapolations beyond. Yet the skill of this band is in blending these volatile ingredients together to create an electrifying and kinetic sound that can just as easily summon the tensions of the city as it can exorcise its demons.

Review: Bringing all matter of alt synth, rock and pop to the sound of indie music, Snapped Ankles' second album dresses itself up in flashy pink for its ultimate release. It presents a second full length record for Leeds-based label Leaf, and Stunning Luxury finds the band tumbling through a kaleidoscope of post-Beatlemania psychedelica; well, "Skirmish In The Suburbs" at least. With other comparable references to outfits like Soulwax and The Rapture, to some Madchester familiarities throughout, it's tracks like "Letter From Hampi Mountain" and "Rechargeable" that gives Snapped Ankles a punky New York sound good enough for the virtual CBGBs dancefloor. Get Dancey.

Review: It takes precisely two minutes of "Tainted Lunch" to realise that Warmduscher really don't give a flying funk what you think. The sort of band who are happy with the strange and rather hallucinatory world they've created for themselves - ideal trippers, if you like.
Opening with the Iggy Pop collaboration "Rules Of The Game", the London outfit are informed by everything from hip hop ("Burner", featuring legend Kool Keith), early Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Midnight Dipper"), post-punk ("Blood Load") and experimental, grungy scuzz, if that's really a thing ("Grape Face"). The result is an album that's pretty much impossible to categorise, which although increasingly common in the genre-less today, rarely presents itself in such a fascinating, abrasive and unapologetic form. Where from here is anyone's guess, simply because the band could quite literally go anywhere from here. Hence closer "Tiny Letters" coming across like the deranged child of 1950s balladry.
