Review: For those submerged in the deep house/disco/slo-mo fusion scene, Kolour Ltd has been one of the standout labels of recent years. It's releases - all limited-edition and pressed on brightly-coloured wax - have offered comfy, touchy-feely grooves from such fast-rising talents as Fantastic Man, Alex Agore, Eddie C and Zoo Look. Having reached ten releases, Kolour Ltd have decided to hand over the reigns to Glasgow's 6th Borough Project for a bit of a celebration. The result is a warm, sofa-comfy mix of label highlights that effortlessly takes in US garage revivalism (Nicholas), sunny smoothness (Deadly Sins), percussive old skool grooves (6th Borough themselves) and hands-in-the-air loop disco (Norm De Plume).

Reach For Love (5:14)
You've Got Me (5:16)
Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Be-Bop
Spring (KZR main)
Review: Big release here for the Kolour Limited series who've scooped up three feel good house cuts from NDATL Music boss Kai Alice. Based around a self explanatory vocal motif "Ahh!" is the sort of euphoric house track you can drop mid set and stand back and watch as a sea of arms are raised in response. The deft track titling continues apace on "Be-Bop" where skat vocals are the perfect accompaniment to the deep chord progressions and metallic percussion, whilst the B Side plays host to just the one track in "Spring (KZR main)" where Alce gets funkier than a mosquito's tweeter thanks to some psychedelic guitar licks, chiming pads and refined 909 sequencing.

Review: The Kolour Ltd label breaks radio silence and does it in style with the heavy hitting It's House Not House EP featuring contributions from Bicep, Rick Wade and DJ Sprinkles! Finding themselves in such respected company, Bicep elect to celebrate their Kolour Ltd debut by granting "Feel It" the vinyl platform it deserves, with the track a much requested secret weapon of their DJ sets. Rick Wade keeps up his near 100% appearance record in the weekly release schedules with "Free" a gem from his late 90s past whilst the flip has DJ Sprinkles going deep in the producer's own inimitably vintage style across 11 minutes on "Kissing Costs Extra".

Ugly Drums & Chesney - "Girls Girls Girls"
Review: Initially released as part of last week's Record Store Day antics, Juno are happy to get our mitts on some of this limited "split grooves" 12" from the always reliable Kolour Ltd. Mr Frank Booker of Hit It Or Quit It fame leads the way with two A Side productions that sit happily between disco and house; loose, funk laden disco is very much the shape of lead track "Movin On" which features some great drum chopping. Complementing this, "It's Time" takes discoid elements and applies them to a crunchy mid tempo house template. Flip over and rising talent Ugly Drums pairs with Chesney for two soul laden productions, with the dusty Raw Cuts style antics of "Soul To Keep" complemented by the sugary beatdown of "Girls Girls Girls".

I Can Prove It (5:58)
Free Love (6:50)
Review: Chevals, who brilliantly describes himself as a "French house producer, disco cutter and horse", came to our attention last year via a fine debut on Better Listen. You'll find further proof of his "rising star" status on this tasty, two-track contribution to Kolour LTD's 10-inch series. Both tracks are essentially re-edits, though there are enough additional touches and new musical elements to elevate them way beyond your average scalpel re-arrangement. The Frenchman kicks thing off with "I Can Prove It", a gently tooled-up and reworked version of a soaring, glassy-eyed disco-soul gem that will sound fantastic at this summer's open-air events. Flipside "Free Love" is an altogether more low-slung affair, with a fizzing, funk-fuelled groove building towards a rush-inducing Philadelphia Soul-goes-disco-house conclusion.

Closed Paradise & Journey Reverse - "Moelleuz" (7:24)
Review: Following recent impressive outings on Above Machine and, surprisingly, Whiskey Disco, Mathieu Cle once again dons the Closed Paradise guise, this time for Kolour Ltd. Opener "Planets" sets the tone, delivering a warm and dreamy blend of fluttering chords, stretched-out build-ups and rolling grooves. Brame and Hamo deliver a sunnier, more obviously soulful take on the same track - complete with what sound like a few live instrumental flourishes - before Cle drops the locked-in, bass-heavy chug of "Tunnels". Finally, he joins forces with Journey Reverse on "Moelleuz", a loose, soulful and woozy jam that benefits greatly from an ultra-dreamy breakdown and some choice vocal samples.

Edit 022 (6:00)
Review: Mike W and Justin McMillen invite Conga to the Kolour factory for two deliciously dubby slabs of loopy disco house. Side A is a thick swampy session of tweakery and loopery where the textures never quite sit still and the sample is so buried under the feels your concentration is completely locked. Side B takes us straight to the peak time with a much more upbeat house groove, another simple-but-effective sample and filters. Huge filters. Heady.

The Feeling Is Strong (7:36)
Long Time Dancing (7:34)
Review: The latest volume in Kolour LTD's popular ten-inch series comes from Dicky Trisco, a producer arguably better known for his impeccable scalpel jobs than his original productions. The two tracks here sit somewhere between the two, building tasty dancefloor tools out a swathe of samples and a handful of new musical elements. Rahaan style A-side "The Feeling Is Strong" peppers a rubbery, bass-heavy disco groove with jammed-out electric piano lines and razor-sharp guitars. On the flip, Trisco adds weighty new drums to a looped-up old disco/boogie fusion jam. So while the vocal-heavy samples scream disco, the alien synths and mutant funk electronics are closer to vintage electrofunk.

Roses (6:51)
Fourpoint-5 (7:01)

H4 (6:50)
Review: Dusty and soulful deep house jams from Richmond, Virginia's DJ Aakmael aka Greg Stewart who has actually been producing since 2004 on a variety of labels but mainly his own imprint, UnXpozd Entertainment. First track "Roses" utilises some stunning grand piano and trumpet solos as well as a sample from 'Jean" by Rod McKuen to accompany some tight rhythm patterns and rich strings. "Fourpoint-5" is classic deep house reminiscent of old Mr. Fingers, in all its emotive and melancholic glory. On the flip there's "Equinox" keeping on with a deep and soulful Detroit deep house sound that fans of Kai Alce would appreciate while "H4" ends things on truly uplifting note, with its dreamy xylophone vibes working with some more nice trumpet sounds and rich strings on a seven minute epic reminiscent of Chris Brann's Wamdue Project from way back. This is quality!

Patchworks - "Batracien" (5:08)
Le Blanc - "We Can Fly" (4:40)
Review: Detroit/Houston joint venture Kolour are back with another instalment in the Tale Of Two Cities series - and this is one serious all star cast if we've ever seen it! The creme de la creme of nu-disco appears here, starting with crazy Canadian Eddie C kicking off the A side with the sunny slo-mo antics of "All Time Freak", followed by the one and only Napoleon! Simon Mills throws down some more of his usual sexy and lo-slung grooves on "Over & Done". On the flip, current scene favourite - the Whiskey Disco boss Sleazy McQueen teams up with Vinyl Addicted on a seriously hot edit of an underground classic (to those that know) on "Hot To Trot" while Lyon's Patchworks hands in another similarly 'respectful edit' on the sultry late night blues of "Batracien". Finally they head down under (to Adelaide, Australia that is!) for Le Blanc's funked up disco house jam "We Can Fly".

Riding In Daddy's Car (6:39)

Strangers Must Be (6:03)
Awake (To The Ways Of The Word) (1:37)
Review: Moonrise Hill Material regular Ethyene is the latest producer to join the Kolour Ltd stable, bringing with him a fine selection of Clubs Dubs & Rubs. The four tracks on offer are effectively high quality club tools for deep house DJs who aren't afraid to drop disco jams in the pursuit of dancefloor magic. Opener "Truth About The Unseen" combines loose, swinging deep house beats with selected passages of a forgotten disco jam, while "Riding In Daddy's Car" adds an extended, filter-heavy breakdown to a similar discoid template. The tempo drops considerably on the groovy, saucer-eyed disco-house chug of "Time Won't Change", while "Strangers Must Be" turns an '80s soul treat into a dreamy deep house shuffler.

Review: Paxton Fettel has made a name for himself through the Greta Cottage Workshop label over the last few years, so we're always keeping our ears open when a new release by the producer drops onto our shelves. In case you hadn't gotten it, we're big fans of the GCW mandem. But, this time he's on the less expansive yet more incisive Kolour LTD label with the Will It Berghain EP, something of an inside joke within the house community. "Claire Likes To Eurodance" is gorgeous house tune that recalls Pepe Bradock material from the late 1990's, all filtered and groovy, while "Track To The Future" is deeper and more jazz-minded. On the B-side, "Buoyancy" contains a set of masterful disco sample strings and sublime stop-start rhythm, only for "You're All My Dreams Are Made Of" to deliver the FUNK. TIP!

Review: The vinyl only Kolour Ltd operation dip their toes in the rich pool of house music talent currently bubbling away in Russia, welcoming Grodno based pair Four Walls & Funkyjaws into the fold on their first 12" of 2014. Four tracks deep, One Night In Grodno demonstrates this pair have a firm and diverse production grasp of what's classified as underground deep house. Check the mad sax solo that breaks free on opening cut "Jazzy Things" Listen on "His Name Is Fast Eddie" reveals Four Walls and Funkyjaws find it difficult not to let their musical side take hold, though the understated diva flex of "Love Train" might be the best cut here.

Them & Us (5:55)
Peasant Dance (5:52)
Review: Detroit/Houston based Kolour have had some pretty credible names feature on their new 10 inch series this year, such as Eddic C, Napoleon, Frank Booker and Lady Blacktronika. Now it is over to the Belarus based disco DJ Funkyjaws who serves up two irresistible jams on Vol 8 of the series. On the A side, we have the soulful and life affirming African boogie of "Them & Us". We have not heard the original but it sounds pretty seamless to us: a respectful edit indeed. On the flip, we have one seriously mad boogie-down jam in the form of "Peasant Dance" which is a truly exotic affair from god knows where! Accordions, wah-wah guitar and some super string arrangements clash wonderfully. This may sound like an unholy mixture but this is exactly the kind of disco deviance that truly floats our boat! The Grodno based producer last appeared for the label on Kolour LTD 22 a couple of years back, and in the meantime has also appeared for the likes of Shadeleaf Music and Austrian imprint Pusic.

Sundown (5:59)
Review: Its feelgood, summertime disco house on the Feel This Way EP, by Belarusian DJ and producer from Grodno and reminiscent of DJ Sneak or Nick Holder's disco cut ups from the mid-nineties. There's some sure fire goodness for sunny day parties on the A side: From the hands in the air vibe of the title track, to the soulful funk groove of "Party Train". On the flip, things get a bit techier on "Acid Indie Club" which much like the name suggests has a warped synth lead that soon gives way to some wicked, big band disco style brass sounds. They leave the best 'til last on "Sundown" though, which you could imagine being played at exactly that time at one awesome beach party to remember.

Now he continues his Stateside swing for Detroit/Houston based Kolour LTD for the sixth edition of their limited 10" series. On the A side "Honey Rider" sees the Dutch producer serve up a deep and slinky house cut, on the soulful and filtered tip. Some sexy synth work and boogie down vibes in full effect here. On the flip, we have got the low slung/slo-mo house of "Mr Scaramanga" which really brings the P-funk style to the max, accompanied by some dusty disco drums and spacey vibes for sexy times on the dancefloor.

Starting out with the deeply uplifting soulfulness of "Never Gonna Leave You 2K16" they are then into "Losing Memory" on the flip which gets more reduced, dubby and emotive, giving a nod to the kind of loopy deepness as heard on labels like Office or Slices Of Life. Million Toes (interlude)
Review: The latest transmission from Kolour Ltd is that bit more special, collating some choice out-of-print cuts that French producer Patchworks released on Parisian hub Q Tapes for this black splattered clear plate. Just one of numerous aliases adopted by Bruno Hovart, the inherent musicality of these Patchwork productions date almost a decade and really do show up a lot of what passes for contemporary "deep house". A long version of "Million Toes" - originally released in 2005 - opens proceedings, finely balancing Hovart's undoubted skill for jazz arrangements with a sumptuous deep house groove that seems perfectly suited to set opening needs (the piano flourishes are particularly luxurious). "Cornbread" from the aforementioned EP is also included here, while Kolour look to Hovart's undervalued work as Porks Watch, with the thickly hypnotic disco-flecked title track from his 2005 Minotaur EP the highlight of the B Side.

Review: Matlock-residing Matt Rivem has been doing his thing on the East Midlands deep house scene for longer than anyone can remember, most notably as part of Rhythm Plate. Here he debuts a new solo alias, Goshawk. Naturally, From The Woods is impeccably produced, and features a trio of delicious deep house gems. There's a pleasingly breezy feel about the bluesy vocal samples, jazzy beats and heavy sub of "In The Evening", while "Sun Up (Heavy Vibes)" comes blinking towards the light via shuffling, Osunlade-ish beats, soulful vocal samples and Balearic electronics. "I Know You Told Me", on the other hand, sounds like vintage US deep house - all eyes-closed diva vocal hits, bumpin' beats and bespoke chords.

Review: We're not sure if the crew from Kolour are from Houston or Detroit; perhaps both? What we do know is that they release some funky sure-fire deep house that's guaranteed to rock dancefloors and this is further indication. Shaka is a Swiss fellow known to his mum as Kurt Spichiger. Some of you may know him from early noughties minimal imprints such as Revolver and Morris Audio. On this four tracker he provides some nifty deep house that's worth checking. "Urbanature" is the first track and it's all swirling, feel good nu-disco business. On the flip "Time Is A Trick" is smoother and has those lush arp stabs facing off with a killer 303 lead and the real highlight on here.

Review: In recent years American imprint Kolour have fast become an institution of sorts, known for purveying quality grooves of the deeper spectrum. Their new compilation A Tale Of 2 Cities no doubt refers to both Detroit and Houston (the two cities from where the label is based) but rest assured that on this compilation their focus is absolutely global. There's a lot to cover on here, but we can tell you it's all good. Our highlights weren't limited to the bittersweet and emotive deepness of Ugly Drums & Lady BlackTronika's "Change The Key", Kiwi slo-mo house hero Frank Booker with his smooth Rhodes heavy groove "Unburdened", Canuck in Berlin Eddie C with the wicked low slung groove of "All Time Freak" and of course former Bent main man Simon Mills aka Napoleon who works more disco magic as always with the fabulous "Over & Done".

It's House Not House Part 2
Cat: KLRLTD 014. Rel: 12 Sep 13

Deep House
Waze & Odyssey - "Playin Musique"
M Ono & Luvless - "Auckland Joggers"
Zoo Look - "My Mind (What You Do)"
Terrence Pearce - "The Fantastic"
Review: Earlier this year the Kolour Ltd label issued the (rather indecisively titled) It's House Not House EP which featured DJ Sprinkles, Rick Wade and Bicep; understandably it was quite well received by the house (not house) vinyl buying public and sensing they are onto a winning formula Kolour now issue a second volume. It's an equally international affair too with the UK represented by the ubiquitous Waze & Oddysey and the like minded Zoo Look whilst Leipzig and South African are represented in the shape of M.ono & Luvless and Terrence Pearce respectively. W&O demonstrate a slightly more contemplative mood melodically speaking amidst the swooping vocal hooks and club ready beats on "Playin Musique" whilst "Auckland Joggers" showcases the inherent musicality of M.ono & Luvless. On the flip Zoo Look come through with a deeply layered slab of contemporary UK house whilst "The Fantastic" from Mr Pearce lives up to it's name and then some.
