This Ain't Work Pt 2 (limited 7")
Cat: KU 080. Rel: 19 Jun 20
Funk
  1. This Ain't Work (part 2) (2:28)
  2. Coming Down (1:24)
  3. RTA (4:17)
Review: The New Mastersounds are Simon Allen on drums, Eddie Roberts on guitar, Pete Shand on bass and Bob Birch on organ and piano, and for year snow they have been one of the tightest funk bands around. Mixing raw talent and an unrivalled love of funk, they mix up classic know how with new school thinking. This 45 shows plenty of influences form library sounds to gangster style funk with yacht rock and jazz also thrown in. The synths and guitars interplay to perfection and ensure dance floors will be in raptures when they hear this one.

Review: Despite his London roots, rapper and beat-maker Lewis Parker has always excelled at making dusty, sample-heavy tracks that sound like they could have come out of New York in the midst of hip-hop's "golden era". For proof, check this brilliant box set, which gathers together some of his finest moments from the late 1990s and early 2000s on five "45s". There's a mix of killer vocal tunes, accompanying instrumentals and the kind of deep, head-nodding soundscapes that would once have been classed as trip-hop (he did feature prominently on Massive Attack's Melankoly label after all). It's not hyperbole to say that "The 45 Collection" contains some of the most entertaining and well-produced British hip-hop ever made.

The 45 Collection No 2 (7" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: FKU 074. Rel: 10 Feb 20
Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Fakin' Jax Remix (instrumental) (3:58)
  2. Shaky Dog (instrumental) (3:49)
Review: KingUnderground and Lewis Parker came together late last year for a splendid five x 7" 45rpm box set. Each of the 10 unreleased songs work as playable and standalone tunes so it makes sense they packaged it in this way, and makes just as much sense that each one is also released on its own terms. The beats hit hard from front to back, with "Fakin' Jax Remix (Instrumental)" digging deep on psyched out riffs and with some magic flute leads. "Shaky Dog (Instrumental)" on the reverse is just as dramatic, with big chords, rolling beats and impassioned vocals.
