Review: We've recently waxed lyrical about Jazz N Palms' fantastic re-edit EPs, which see the London collective offer-up tidy revisions of all manner of jazz and jazz-funk obscurities. Predictably, their latest clutch of cut-jobs is well worth picking up, too. They begin in gloriously summery fashion via the glistening jazz guitars, hazy horns and two-step jazz-funk beats of 'Passion', before rearranging a soft-focus flamenco-jazz gem ('Van Van'). They fast forward to the electrofunk era on luscious B-side opener 'Night Rider' - all electronic beats, elongated electric guitar solos and fretless bass - while 'Bueonos Dias' is laidback, lovely, rich in classy horn sounds and blessed with some suitably languid solos.

Review: Jazz N Palms turn out another of their standout re-edit EPs here and the sixth in the series is no less special than the previous five. As ever, the MO is that the London collective offers tidy revisions of all a wide range of jazz and jazz-funk obscurities. This one kicks off with a Bob James style jam full of instrumental funk and then goes on to the glossy samba rhythms and woodblock hits of 'Santa Ana.' There are more languorous sounds on the stretched out solos of 'El Sabe' then the pace picks up for the energetic shuffles of 'El Sabe.' Last but not least is 'Exotic Flavour,' a freeform cut with wandering bass and steamy sax lines.

Review: DJ crew Jazz 'N' Palms are probably best known for their association with Ronnie Scott's in London, where they can regularly be heard warming up for bands. Their new vinyl venture explores the more Balearic side of their musical personality, with EP one featuring re-edits of tracks often played poolside at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. That means a mixture of languid, Pat Metheny-ish Mediterranean jazz-fusion ("Coastal Highway"), Latin-fired jazz-funk ("Going East"), sumptuous Rhodes-laden soundscapes ("Chica"), humid Afro-Cuban jazz ("1492"), afternoon-fresh Flamenco-jazz fusion ("St Martin"), and the kind of relaxed, louche fare that Bob James would probably enjoy ("Strings of Spring").

Review: Jazz N Palms let loose with noter of their impossibly sunny and freeform new EPs. It packs in five more iconic tunes that have all been reworked, retouched and edited by the in house team. They're the sort of joyous jams you'd hear in more grown up spots in Ibiza and at monthly warm-up sets at the Ronnie Scott's (London) jazz concerts held at Pikes. Latin, funk, jazz, bossa, beats and soul all collide here with big brass sounds, organic percussive energy and sunshine to spare. The playful porno sounds of 'La Ola' is our pick.

  1. Latin Rollercoaster (8:15)
  2. Flying Over Corcovado (6:08)
  3. M Squared (6:48)
  4. Stay Awhile (5:14)
Review: New edit label on the block Jazz N Palms is back for a second round of super smooth sounds aimed squarely at the summertime vibe. First up is "Latin Rollercoaster", a wonderful undulating slice of jazz funk that doesn't hide its chops where they've stretched out the groove but still flows beautifully. "Flying Over Corcovado" is a more mellow, string-swelling affair with swooning moods to make you all misty eyed. "M Squared" locks down into a cool, sax-fuelled groove that you could get down to as easily as kick back and relax. "Stay A While" completes this sumptuous set with a seductive, slinky groove peppered with flutes, blissful keys and some sweet slap bass. Need we say more?

  8. Cielo (7:54)
Review: Previously, the shadowy Jazz 'N' Palms crew has stuck to re-edits, offering up on-point, scalpel style reworks of thoroughly obscure jazz, tropical and Balearic gems. With Ses Rodes, they've ditched the re-edits, instead offering up an album of original tracks, recorded in Ibiza with the help of a quartet of musicians. The results are pleasingly leisurely and soft focus, with winding analogue synth solos, languid saxophone lines, horizontal jazz guitar solos and warming Rhodes motifs - and the odd Pat Metheny style improvised vocal - rising above mostly laidback grooves. Along the way, you can expect forays into jazz-funk, spiritual jazz, art-rock, exotica, library music, soundtrack grooves and sun-splashed Balearic beats.

Jazz N Palms 04

  1. Luz Del Sol (4:59)
  2. Cold Drink (5:17)
  3. I Won't Be Long (5:21)
  4. Fenix (3:43)
Review: Here's another essential selection of reworks from London's Jazz N Palms crew, a collective of dusty-fingered diggers and good groove enthusiasts best known for the (pre-pandemic) residency at Ronnie Scott's. They hit the ground running with 'Luz Del Sol', a tidy revision of a gorgeously sunny, vibraphone-sporting chunk or orchestrated smoothness, before going all Balearic on the similarly summery 'Cold Drink' (think Pat Metheny style jazz-fusion, and you're close). Over on the flip, 'I Won't Be Long' is a fantastic extension of a previously oh-too-short, disco era jazz-funk gem, while 'Fenix' is a deeper, more spiritual jazz excursion that boasts a soft-touch groove and some spellbinding woodwind solos.
