I Can't Make It (4:34)
I Can't Stop Loving You (3:07)
Review: You'd be hard pushed to find a better label than Hawaii's Izipho Soul when it comes to heart aching soul sounds. As it fast approaches its 100th release it is Jesus Alvarez who lands on this new 7" with two tunes taken from an album that has not knowingly been released and never maddest past the promotional test pressing on Columbia. Both just are exceptional and are from the same recording period as 'Sooner or Later', a 7" on Polydoor, with Alvarez being well known at the time for his Sylvia Robinson connection and productions and performances on The Willow Band’s ‘Willowman’ and The Nicky Newarkers ‘Woman’.

How Long Will It Take (feat Stevie Wonder - live) (12:08)
Review: Izipho Soul is the sort of label that gets soul lovers hot under the solar just at mention of its name. The label always turns out stone cold gems and this new EP features the sublime Bernadette Bascom. It takes in the years 1979 to 1981, including the majestic 'I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love' as well as 'Seattle Sunshine; and the previously unreleased nugget 'I Need You' as well as the icing on the cake which is an unheard 12 minute live recording with the legendary Stevie Wonder. Next to the tunes, you'll also get a fine Bernadette Bascom branded pen! Random but great.

Love Stormy Weather (4:09)
Crying For Your Love (4:02)
Review: Soul collectors have long considered Melvin Brown and James Matthews' "Love Stormy Weather" to be a slept-on classic. Initially released (and largely ignored) in 1976, it sits somewhere between the acoustic soul of Terry Callier, the dewy-eyed goodness of Rotary Connection, and the sumptuous jazz-funk that was all the rage in the late 1970s. Don't take our word for it, though: check out the sound clips for yourself. On the flipside you'll find a previously unheard gem from the duo: the impassioned, tear-jerking torch song "Crying For Your Love". Naturally it's a little fuzzy round the edges (the masters were probably sat in someone's loft for 30-odd years), but still sounds powerful and emotional.

I'm Here (4:03)
The Moment (4:35)
Review: 'I'm Here' is the glorious second single from Cornell CC Carter's album, Next Life. It is a superbly seductive and go-slow stepper with neat bass riffs spaciously drawn out beneath acoustic guitar motifs and lumpy drums. The vocal is butter sweet and as the track rolls on the chords grow ever more lush. After that memorising a-side comes a modern take on Curtis Mayfield style soul complete with the steamy spoken vocals, screen string sweeps and pillowy chords. Finishing it off in style is a bassline to die for.

Review: Lovers of heart aching soul are well attuned to the output of the Izipho Soul label. Each and every 7" they serve up is impossibly emotive and the new one is no different from Cornell CC Carter. It features singles taken from the artist's hugely anticipated new album, Next Life, and suggests it's going to be an absolute cracker. It will feature 13 carefully constructed songs with rich 70s and 80s soul influences throughout. Here the two chosen singles offer mid tempo, deep cut funk backed with a big ballad that will melt anyone's heart.

You've Been Wrong So Long (3:31)
Review: Izipho Soul spoil us once again with this never before heard track from New Mexico troubadour Freddie Chavez. Best known for his thumping northern soul classic "They'll Never Know Why", "Cold Rainy Day" slides with a little more jazz funk and shinier production. Written with John Wagner a few years before his cult hit in the early 70s it criminally never saw the light of day. Until now. Flip for a rare country/rock affair from Chavez where the shades sit somewhere between Skynard and John. Only 250 pressed; only being long is wrong...

Ronn Colbert - "Just One Kiss Away" (3:56)
Ronn & Selah - "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" (4:42)
Review: Stand by for the much anticipated follow up to the unreleased Ronn Colbert 7" on this label earlier in the year. "Just One Kiss Away" is an ultra rare soul stepper from 1981. It finds Ronn and Selah Colbert go up against one another, and both serve up super sultry, seductive vocals that tease and please. Add in steamy chords and soaring strings and you have one helluva smoocher. "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" is another romantic to and fro between the pair, with a little more tension and build in the rhythm edition that adds an extra element of spice. Both are sure to become re-found classics.

In My Life (3:37)
Review: Dallas based singer-songwriter Derek Damian recorded the gloriously life-affirming soul nugget 'Watcha Wanna Do' a decade ago. It has lost none of its charm or magic all these years later as this new pressing attests. The rolling grooves, the effortlessly epic vocals and the serene string all ooze class. On the flip, he gets more romantic with the perfectly tender and intimate 'Never Felt So Good.' It's beefed up by bold baritone vocals, contemporary R&B production and gooey bass. A killer 45 for sure.

Get Off The Phone (1978 version) (3:10)
Get Off The Phone (unreleased 1981 version) (3:20)
Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing Epicentre's "Get Off The Phone". Until 2014, when it appeared on a Light In The Attic compilation, this near perfect slice of jazz-funk/proto-boogie goodness had only even been available on an obscure 1978 collection celebrating local bands put together by a Seattle radio station. It's well worth a single release, not least to get a decent quality pressing suitable for club plays. The unknown band's original version - which features a suitably dewy-eyed vocal from Bernadette Bascom, eyes-closed electric guitar solos and warm period instrumentation - is this time accompanied by a previously 1980 re-make that's arguably even better thanks to the presence of spacey synthesizers and elastic slap bass.

June Evans is the latest lung busting vocalist to swoon her way into our hearts with this dazzling performance from 1981 over golden chords, leggy drums and a killer synth bassline that is phat as hell. Flip it over for 'Hardly Need To Say,' an achingly beautiful lament over a fusion groove that glows bright and exudes warmth.

Let Go (4:39)
Review: Izipho Soul recently described Frederick Davis as "one of Cleveland's hidden gems". This tasty seven-inch, which contains two tracks recorded way back in 1992 but never before issued, certainly backs up their assertion. A-side "Shoulder to Cry On" is something of a sparkling, late night synth-soul treat - a close-dancing slow jam that sees Davis's fine vocal rise above a backing track rich in chiming electronic melodies, post New Jack Swing R&B style beats and sensual saxophone solos. Flip for the similarly minded but arguably more elastic "Let Go", where the unheralded Cleveland singer whispers seductively over a killer synth bassline and more cascading '80s soul melodies.

It Never Rains (Effex Desert Soul remix) (4:13)
Review: Previously spotted adding his potent dulcets to the work of Kejam, US soul governor Terry Harris returns solo with his new album Prince Of Stepping. This striking 45 on Izipho Soul gives us an apt snapshot of the LP as "On The Floor" hits hard with its O'Neal level vocal soul syrup trickling down your ears like some type of life preserving elixir while Harris' "It Never Rains" is subtly transformed into deep, sweet shuffling house by way of the Effex Desert Soul remix. Turn the lights down, Harris is here to stay.

I'm Gonna Love You More (part 2) (5:23)
Review: Soul fans hold Heart-Soul up there as one of the most mythical outfits of their era. Along with their band leader, drummer and producer Vine Howard they recorded just one album, their 1974 debut, but it was packed with buttery and heart melting gems. One of the enduring standouts is the epic 11-minute 'I'm Gonna Love You More' which reimagines Barry White's erotic classic from the year before. It's a steamy mix of slow grooves and baritone vocal brilliance. It is cut up across both sides here with some extended breaks meaning it is even more of a seductive funk workout.

Summer Breeze (4:09)
Review: Initially released in very limited quantities way back in 1983 via private press imprint Break-A-Way Records, Rex Hush's sole single 'Pull Over' has long been unknown to all but a handful of dedicated, dusty-fingered collectors. Happily, Izipho Soul managed to track down Hush and arranged a licensed reissue. 'Pull Over' is simply superb: a classic, boogie-era fusion of contemporaneous electronic funk and cosmic soul rich in spacey, liquid bass guitar, flash-fried guitar licks and jaunty piano lines, all topped off by a fine lead vocal from Hush. This time round, the song comes backed by a previously unreleased cut recorded during the same sessions: the sweet, piano-laden ballad 'Summer Breeze'. It's good, though it's the dynamite A-side that you really need in your life

God's Got A Blessing (With My Name On It!) (4:22)
Review: The irrepressible Izipho Soul label has another vital soul 7" on its hands here, this time from Norman Hutchins. He's a bishop in the church with a voice powerful enough to bring anyone to tears and here he is backed with a fantastic choir who help elevate these tunes to an even higher level. They drip with gospel force and spiritualism and the a-side tune - a joyous and uplifting modern gospel soul anthem - is presented as an extended version with extra focus on the vocals. 'God Is A Blessing' on the flip is no less potent. Two real pearlers.

Review: We are big fans of the Izipho Soul label here at Juno, and anyone with a heart surely is too. It puts out the most emotive soul sounds from across the ages and this latest super limited 7" is another essential one to add to the racks. It comes from Mississippi Bluesman Vasti Jackson who always brings sweat as well as sensuousness to his sounds. He recorded this ode to undying love back in 2015 and reaches real heights with the vocals that espouse endless love. The flip-side is just as special - a ballad from a few years before that is no less powerful.

Both of these magnificent versions of this lovely track are a few years old but are making their vinyl debut here. Review: Julian Jonah is a true veteran of British music, having caught the earliest wave of UK house music, worked with Billie Ray Martin, and even lent his chops to the mighty 187 Lockdown. On this single for Izipho Soul, he's tapping into a classic vein of late 80s-early 90s soul, with a smooth as silk production style and stunning vocal turns from Tamika (on 'Now's The Time For Us') and Ada Dyer (on 'Comin' Back For Your Lovin''). If you grew up through the original era this record will trigger all those nostalgic feelings for quintessential prime time radio soul, with all the feel-good factor in place on one handy little 7".

Review: It would be fair to say that Dee "Kejam" Majek (real name Oladisun Majekodunmi) is something of a veteran, with the Nigeria-born writer, musician and label owner producing his first released music way back in the early 1980s. This double seven-inch single marks his debut for Izipho Soul, and his first release of any sort since 2016 debut album "Majek". There's much to admire throughout, from the slick '80s soul warmth of Lisa Taylor collaborations "Can You Feel The Love" and "My Only Love" - the latter featuring a slight two-step soul feel - to the electrofunk-influenced R&B shuffle of Chanel hook-up "This Love Is Magic (Soul Rockers Mix)" and the toasty, dewy-eyed goodness of "When It Rains", which features lovely lead vocals from Cleveland Jones.

Gospel Clouds - "Let Us Pray" (3:38)
Review: Leonard Lothlen is a California gospel music icon who this label made contact with for this release. It comes with a concept and that is "to place two gospel compositions recorded fifty years apart on one record." It means there are two very different and diverse tunes but two equally brillaint ones on this 7" with powerful vocals from Derick Hughes on 'In The Presence.' They come with a subtle doff of the cap to the late great Bishop Rance Allen. On the flip is 'Let Us Pray,' which was the first tune Leonard did with his GC's group in 1971. It is a real rarity and expensive gem if you can find an OG, Importantly, it is worth the cash whatever you pay.

Review: Clarence Mann is from Alabama. He was 14 years old when he completed his first recording with a high school choral group on RCA Records. After high school, he sang with various bands while attending college. In 1973, he released his first single entitled "Man's Temptation / Have Faith In Me" on T&M Records followed by "Please Accept My Love" and "You Met Your Match" respectively. After his solo career, he joined the group True Image as lead vocalist. Their recordings were released on a subsidiary of the famed TK Productions. The group continued with the independent Alabama label Juana Records when T.K. closed its doors. True Image released two singles in 1980. After these recordings Clarence Mann did several different versions of the song "Come What May". The original recording was recorded by John Gary Williams in 1973 and was released on Stax Records. Although Clarence Mann did several versions of it, only two of them with True Image have seen the spotlight.

Review: Richard Marks is something of an Atlanta soul music hero who had a fine run of brillaint singles on small labels local to him. A pair of his most hardcore fans - Eothen Alapatt from Now-Again and Georgia's soul expert Brian Poust - have worked hard to put together a string of releases of his best work with the blessing of the Marks family. This 7" focusses on two alternate versions of his solitary 7" release for Shout on one side - the pained, soulful 'Love Is Gone' and more upbeat 'Don't Take It On Me', and a sentimental, soppy 80s ballad on the flip that was his last ever release.
