Irreversible Entanglements (LP with obi-strip)

  1. Chicago To Texas (10:44)
  2. Fireworks (9:14)
  3. Enough (7:25)
  4. Projects (16:01)
Review: From the moment "Chicago to Texas" begins in a riot of restless drum rolls, solo trumpet improvisation and cosmic beat poetry, you know that Irreversible Entanglements' debut album is going to be an enjoyable listen. The free jazz collective first performed in 2015, later adding two more members to become the inspired five-piece showcased here. Remarkably, the four epic workouts featured were genuine improvisations recorded on their very first day in the studio. Given their quality - especially the spiritual "Fireworks" and cacophonous "Projects", a 16-minute epic that changes tack several times - it would be safe to say that the players involved all have serious skills. Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: The debut album for Ben LaMar Gay can also be considered his greatest hits of sorts. It's a collection of songs performed and produced by the Chicago born, sometimes Brazil-residing artist - all compiled from seven albums he made over the last several years, but never made the effort to actually release. With its title taken from the mantra he repeats across several tracks, Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun is 'avant-garde Americana' at its finest by a talented musician that has previously worked with the likes of legends Mark Pritchard, Theo Parrish, Wajeed and Steve Spacek. Released via local imprint International Anthem: a recording company that produces and promotes progressive media.

Review: While moving from his long-term home Chicago to Los Angeles a few years back, Tortoise member Jeff Parker rediscovered a swathe of old home recordings - "beat projects" built around samples of dusty old jazz tracks. These became the starting point for New Breed, his most expansive solo album for some time. Full of his usual loose and evocative jazz guitar, the set sits somewhere between lo-fi post-rock/jazz fusion, experimental hip-hop, and softly spun electronica. Regardless of style, it's a hugely evocative and entertaining collection of tracks.
