Cat: IDLE 047. Rel: 12 Oct 17
Techno
  1. Pseudo Science (6:03)
  2. Heavy Manners (8:24)
Review: Nick Harris aka A Sagittariun lands on Bristol's Idle Hands with a smacking two-tracker for the techno puritans! Fair enough, the flow and structure of "Pseudo Science" might not be typically classed as traditional techno, but there is so much freedom in its half-step beats and circular percussion shots, making this a beautiful relic of the sort of dance music that was being made just before the rise of 'minimal'. On the B-side, "Heavy Manners" is slower to pick up pace, kicking off with a frosty, barren procession of hi-hats and mild beats, both giving way to the much more powerful swing of the pads and harmonies in the backdrop. Excellent.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Katalox (6:08)
  2. Del's Kicks (6:10)
Review: Although he's only on his third release to date, Christian Jay is an Idle Hands boy, through and through. This return to the imprint places him in a convenient position, now able to show the world what 'bass' means to him, and exactly how he likes to construct his hybrid cuts. The lead tune "Katalox" is a suave, minimalistic garage stepper with a two-step stance, wrapped in all sorts of airy ambient waves; "Del's Kicks" is a similar sort of groove, this time breaking out yet more percussive glory. Cold, calculated, and utterly excellent.

Orphan (12")
Cat: IDLE 055. Rel: 06 Dec 18
Deep House
  1. Orphan (6:24)
  2. Lundgatan (7:18)
  3. Esqpads (7:34)
Review: Idle Hands has released a lot of good music over the years, but little that's quite as instantly rush-inducing as "Orphan", the A-side to Stockholm producer Pistol Pete's first 12" for the Bristol institution. Warm, melodious and loved-up to the max, it sits somewhere between the piano-powered techno rush of Shed's Head High project and the sort of dusty deep house that seems so popular in Europe right now. It has the feel of a summer anthem in waiting, though it will provide its own audio sunshine if you drop it in a dark club in the middle of winter. The B-side cuts are a little deeper but no less touchy-feely in vibe, with the loopy, soulful warmth of "Lundgatan" being followed by the groovy, head-in-the-clouds deep house hypnotism of "Esqpads".
