Lose Control/It's (Not) Just An 808
Cat: CHANNEL 043. Rel: 07 Oct 14
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Lose Control
  2. Bent
  3. It's (Not) Just An 808
  4. It's (Not) Just An 808 (Warehouse mix)
Review: You'd perhaps expect a collaboration between veteran dub disco eccentric DJ Spun and one-time Spacetime Continuum man Jonah Sharp to be a particularly spaced-out affair. By and large, this first 12" under the collective Loose Control Band moniker is, with the deep ambient dub-meets-808 electro of "It's (NOT) Just An 808" sounding like one of Sharp's own productions from the late '90s. There's a similarly intergalactic feel to the tougher, chunkier "Warehouse Mix" of the same track, while "Bent" is a prime chunk of muddy, early Dubtribe San Francisco deep house crossed with Spun's usual dub disco grooves. Best of all, though, is "Lose Control", an unflinchingly positive chunk of breezy jazz-house complete with cymbal-heavy percussion and gentle electronic builds.

Broken Drums
Cat: CHANNEL 047. Rel: 08 Sep 14
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Broken Drums
  2. Super Chips
  3. Super Chips 808
Review: Former Chicken Lips man Dean Meredith seems to have found a soul mate in grumpy New York DJ/producer Eric Duncan; this is the duo's fifth collaborative 12" for Golf Channel in the last two years. "Broken Drums" picks up where previous installments left off, delivering an attractive, unfussy blend of proto-house influenced drum machine rhythms, looped chords and vintage synthesizer melodies. As is customary with their 12" singles, flipside "Super Chips" drops the tempo, offering up a faintly foreboding leftfield nu-disco jam blessed with trippy synths and vintage sounds. The "Super Chips 808" version strips the track back to its hissing, woozy rhythm, delivering a no-nonsense, freestyle-influenced take for late night floors.

Dominatrix
Cat: CHANNEL 074. Rel: 06 Mar 18
Deep House
  1. Dominatrix (7:13)
  2. Dominatrix (acappella) (4:48)
Review: Golf Channel present a whip-crackingly seductive gem from cult actress Rossy and Polish groove fiend Max Skiba. Slinking with loose drums, sparkling with tightly strummed guitars, slapping with a lubed up bassline; everything is in place for a devastatingly sexy purring vocal from Rossy as she explicitly tells you what you're going to do and how you're going to do it. With a big string crescendo and cool accapella DJ tool, this one will be soundtracking dungeons for a long time to come.

Only Love Can Take Us Home (Welcome Stranger mixes)
  1. Only Love Can Take Us Home (Welcome Stranger mix 1)
  2. Only Love Can Take Us Home (Welcome Stranger mix 2)
Review: Golf Channel delve back into the canon of former Phantom Band member and Can cohort Dominik Von Senger with two supreme remixes of "Only Love Can Take Us Home" from Thomas Bullock under the Welcome Stranger moniker. As appealing as those upfront and limited Golf Channel promos are, there's always the sense you might want to wait for the finished copies to arrive due to the excellent artwork that invariably adorns them. Whilst last week's Juju & Jordash 12" was an office opinion splitter (certain Juno employees have been put off hamantash for life) the cover art for the full edition of Only Love Can Take Us Home is an excellent collage of saturated photography that complements the double dose of hypnotic Welcome Stranger edits within. Bullock's first version is a woozy, motorik delight embellished with sporadic bursts of guitar feedback, while the flipside is all blissful and beatless ambience.
