Notes: You may wonder - what's that strange connector on the top of the Bullfrog? This is the VOICECARD slot. Voicecards expand functionality of the Bullfrog and make it even more versatile. Essentially, the voicecards replace patch cables - they connect the "modules" of the Bullfrog internally. The ELECTRIC ORGAN voicecard makes internal connections of the Bullfrog to emulate pipe organ, when several notes are played together. It also illustrates the principles of ADDITIVE SYNTHESIS. In additive synthesis several simpler waveforms are mixed together to generate more complex sounds. On this voicecard the pulsewave is sent to the DIVIDER and all outputs of the divider are mixed together with the original pulsewave and sent to the VCF and then to the VCA. Both ENVELOPE GENERATORS are involved in the same way as on the Acid Bassline voicecard. The DIVIDER divides an original frequency by even numbers and as result produces a pitch that is even octaves down form the original pitch. Faders on the voicecard determine an amplitude of each suboctave. Set the VCA OFFSET all way counter clockwise, PULSE OUT to the max. Push the MANUAL GATE button to check the sound. Tweak settings of the faders and observe the difference in the sound. Tweak CUTOFF and RESONANCE knobs. Add some echo by setting the DRY/WET knob to 12:00 and find the best DELAY TIME and FEEDBACK settings. Now, connect the keyboard and you are ready to perform Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

As it's name suggests, the HIGHPASS VCF voicecard expands the sound treatment capabilities of the Bullfrog by bringing a highpass filter into the game. This allows for exploring highpass and bandpass filtering. The voice card features typical VCF controls - CUTOFF frequency, RESONANCE and CV LEVEL. The CV source switch allows for selecting between three CV sources - envelope generator 2, Sample & Hold LFO, which is a pulsewave generator in the Sample&Hold "module". The voice card features internal audio connections - the output from the MIXER is patched into the highpass VCF, the output of the highpass VCF goes into the input of the onboard lowpass VCF which is then connected to the VCA. For more flexibility, no CV connections for the Bullfrog are present on the voice card, so you have to do the patching yourself.

The WIND AND STARS voicecard makes internal connections of the Bullfrog so that it automatically emulates randomly evolving wind sound and blinking stars are controlled by the divider. Toddlers fall asleep better when they hear sounds like these.

The NOISE is patched into VCF and the VCF is patched to VCA. Set the VCA OFFSET to 12:00, ENVELOPE GENERATOR 1 to LOOP mode, NOISE LVL all way clockwise. Then manipulate SAMPLE & HOLD RATE setting, VCF CUTOFF, RESONANCE and CV 1 LVL settings, and well as ATTACK 1 and RELEASE 1 settings. Add some echo by setting the DRY/WET knob to 12:00 and find the best DELAY TIME and FEEDBACK settings.

Bullfrog is a classical subtractive synthesiser - it consists of several "modules" for sound generation - VCO, NOISE GENERATOR - and treatment - VCF, VCA/DELAY, as well as "modules" that generate control and modulation signals to control them - ENVELOPE GENERATORS and SAMPLE & HOLD. The Bullfrog will not make the sound on its own unless it is patched - using eurorack patch cables to interconnect the "modules" or by inserting voice cards that create internal connections between the "modules" in a specific way and add extra functionality, like sampler/looper, sequencer, groovebox, etc. This approach better helps to understand functionality of a subtractive synthesizer and the principles of sound design with instruments like these.

In order to provide a well rounded understanding of the functionality of this synthesizer and sound synthesis in general, a comprehensive user manual is created to accompany the learning process.

The Erica Synths Black BBD is one of kind analogue delay module. It features two BBD lines: short, 1024 stage and long, 4096 stage, that work simultaneously and you can smoothly fade between those two, thus creating distinct multitap effect.

Furthermore, an advanced BBD clock noise cancellation circuit is implemented that reduces unwanted BBD noise without filtering higher frequencies of audio signal. Most of parameters are voltage controlled, which allows to integrate the module in complex modular setups.

Time

This is delay time manual control.

Because of BBD clock suspension circuit, delay time can be pushed in extremely long regions, however in that case BBD clock noise may appear. The Time CV is added to the knob setting.

In level

This is the input attenuator switch. Select among full amplitude, half amplitude and audio off.

BBD mode

This control smoothly fades between short and long delays. Any setting in-between will result in distinct multitap delay effect.

LFO rate

Adjust the internal modulation LFO rate. The internal LFO controls delay time, and it's automatically disengaged, when an external modulation signal is connected. The LED gives visual feedback on the LFO rate.

LFO shape

Select the LFO shape. Three shapes are available - triangle, square and in-between shape - mix of triangle and square.

Input

This is the audio input of the module. This is manual Dry/Wet mix. The MIX CV is added to the knob setting.

Colour

Even though the module has BBD clock suspension circuit, the colour switch provides extra lowpass filtering of the signal. At top setting no filtering is applied, at lower settings increasing filtering is present.

Feedback

This is the delay feedback manual control. In extreme clockwise settings the module goes into self-oscillation, and by adjusting delay time and BBD mode settings, the module becomes a drone machine. The FBK CV is added to the knob setting.

CV level

This is the Time CV level attenuator. If nothing is patched into TIME CV socket, it controls the internal LFO amplitude.

WET out

This is the WET signal output of the module - use it for advanced patches.

Out

This is the main output of the module.

Notes: Take a DJ-mixer-style combined high-pass and low-pass filter, cram it into Eurorack and you have the DJ VCF. A simple formula, but one perfected by Erica's attention to detail, with CV control and adjustable resonance.

As its name suggests, the Erica Synths Black DJ VCF provides sound treatment functionality typically found on DJ decks - it is fully open when the cutoff knob is set to 12:00. When turned counter-clockwise, lowpass filtering is applied and when turned clockwise, highpass filtering is applied. The filter also has a nice-sounding resonance parameter. This module provides hands-on control over the sound during the performance, as well as unconventional timbre modulations that are hard to achieve with conventional state variable filters. The Black DJ VCF is a fully analogue design and consists of two VCFs - highpass and lowpass in series and the filter management is done by complex CV routing.

CUTOFF
This is the main control of the module - manual cutoff frequency adjustment with a twist - it's fully open when the cutoff knob is set to 12:00. When turned counter-clockwise, lowpass filtering is applied and when turned clockwise, highpass filtering is initiated

Adjust the audio signal level

RESONANCE
Adjust the resonance level manually. On settings over 1PM, the filter will start to self-oscillate. The resonance is incoming audio signal-sensitive - a signal of greater amplitude may reduce the impact of resonance on the resulting sound

This is the cuto CV attenuverter. Adjust the CV level to your taste! Notice that the cutoff CV works differently compared to conventional state variable filters - it sweeps the filter from closed lowpass through fully open to closed highpass

The Erica Synths Black Dual ASR EG is a versatile, full analogue voltage controlled looping envelope generator and low frequency oscillator with manually and voltage controlled shape and rate, designed for use in advanced modular systems.

It has two identical parts, each featuring all typical envelope generator controls and bonus features - the end of the cycle output and bi-polar LFO output. When in loop mode the shortest attack and decay settings turn the module into voltage controlled drone oscillator with adjustable waveform (it will not track 1V/oct, though).

Notes: The Erica Synths Envelope Generator 2 is a re-triggerable, looping envelope generator with some unconventional features that are very useful for experimental setups. What sets the Black EG2 apart from other envelope generators is its optional GATE LENGTH setting, which allows for generating full ADSR envelopes even if a short trigger is used at the input. Likewise, in LOOP mode, the module outputs a full ADSR envelope instead of a classical AD envelope. The gate length is both manual and CV controlled, which allows for using this envelope generator in compact modular setups controlled by trigger sequencers only.

LOOP/SINGLE

Select between SINGLE SHOT or LOOP modes. When the internal gate is o , the rise and fall times are set via the A and R knobs. When the internal gate is on, all knobs have an e ect on the envelope shape.

The LED gives visual feedback on the envelope state.
GATE ON
Engage the internal gate and you have a full ADSR envelope in loop mode and with a trigger applied to the trigger input in single mode.

TRIGGER

This is the TRIGGER input. You can retrigger the envelope and start the attack stage again, even if the gate is still high (see Figure 1).

If you wish to use the envelope generator with an internal gate, patch the incoming trigger signal here. The internal gate is linked to the trigger input, not the gate input.

Notes: Erica Synths Black Hole DSP 2, an updated version of Black Hole DSP features 24 custom effects, designed in close co-operation of Erica Synths team rider KODEK and creator of SpinCAD software Gary Worsham. The module features 10 sets of custom Crash and Ride cymbal samples with Tune control and individual Decay control. An extra feature is sample looping - when it's on, a certain part of the sample is looped while the envelope decay is on, thus creating a distinct, delay-like effect. As its name suggests, the Erica Synths DJ VCF STEREO module provides sound treatment functionality typically found on DJ decks - it is fully open when the cutoff knob is at 12:00. When turned counter-clockwise, lowpass filtering is applied and when turned clockwise, highpass filtering is initiated. Additionally, there is a nice-sounding, adjustable resonance parameter. This provides hands-on control over the sound during performances as well as unconventional timbre modulations that are hard to achieve with conventional state variable filters.

Erica Synths Modulator is an advanced modulation and pitched noise source with focus on rhythmic (but not limited to) compositions in mind. It features two identical syncable to the BPM LFOs/noise sources with selectable morphing waveshapes. LFO frequency can be manually adjustable, as well as they provide frequency divisions and multiplication in Sync mode. Each LFO has two outputs- main one and secondary one with adjustable phase, so you can create evolving modulations. Furthermore, LFOs can be linked to work at the same frequency and the first LFO has built in VCA to control output signal amplitude.

X0X-style beat creation for modular systems - Erica's drum sequencer is based on the concepts of classic Roland TR rhythm composers. The module offers 16 trigger channels, twelve of which also feature accent outputs. Additionally, there is a CV and a gate track, meaning you can also notate a bass line or melody. The maximum pattern length is 64 steps. Extensive playback and random functions plus two LFOs help you with creating lively results. Notes: Erica Synths Fusion Dual Mixer is designed to mix and overdrive audio signals on the vacuum tube.

Use the Fusion Mixer as two independent 3-input mixers (also for stereo signal mixing) or a 6-input mixer. Special feature of the Fusion Mixer - great tube overdrive effects when level knobs are set to 3 o'clock or above. When used with drum machines, it even emulates sidechain compressors. When used to mix signals from VCOs Fusion Mixer it works as waveshaper, especially, if pulse width modulated pulse signals is used in one of inputs.

All Fusion modules by default are configured to work with regular eurorack PSU.

Due to the fact that cold tube heaters have lower resistance, Fusion modules have significant power consumption peak at startup, when power consumption almost doubles for 1-2 seconds. This is not a problem with linear PSUs that have power inertia, but may cause switching PSU internal protection to turn off power supply. Please make sure your PSU has some headroom before installing multiple Fusion modules.

The core of the module is highly stable AS3340-based VCO with three simultaneously available waveforms, transistor-based suboscillator and detune function - two BBD delay lines that make frequency shifter that is mixed back to the principal oscillator in order to emulate two detuned VCOs. Tube crunch - distinct tube overdrive - is added on the top of the mix. Furthermore, Audio input mixes an external audio signal with the principal oscillator which results in crazy sonic experience. Fusion VCO2 is exactly what you need, if you wish to get really low frequencies and have a sound that sets your modular system apart from mass!

The sound is clean, modern, punchy and detailed thanks to the unit running at 96kHz - quite different to some low bit-rate wavetable oscillators on the market. Wavetable interpolation is smooth as butter and with the built-in effects you can dirty things up in many different ways. The module scores highly on the sound front. The Graphic VCO is a very capable oscillator module with excellent sound quality and a lot of features that could make it the right choice, especially if live performance is your thing. - Sound On Sound
The bottom line is that the Graphic VCO is a joy to use. It's a module that's unashamedly digital, yet unmistakably eurorack. I think Erica showed a great deal of careful judgement and restraint in the design of this module. It would have been easy to have made it bloated and cumbersome trying to cram as many features as possible into it, but they kept it fairly simple which keeps the module fun and immediate in use.
