Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Review: Emotional Rescue's trilogy of obscure reggae-disco reissues comes to a close with another killer, this time from former Studio One session man Richard Ace. Those with a passion for the genre will no doubt already know Ace's cheery 1979 cover of "Stayin' Alive". "Jones Town Massacre", though, is arguably even more potent; a rolling, floor-friendly cover of a Prince Tony number full of punchy, rum-soaked horns, jangling pianos, rolling beats and a killer bassline. As with the previous titles in the series, the flipside features an extended contemporary re-edit, with in-house crew Apophenia (AKA boss Stuart 'Chuggy' Leath and Soft Rocks' Piers Harrison) emphasizing the killer groove in a tough, dubwise style.

Review: Emotional Rescue is delighted to announce bringing together two classic Suicide songs reinterpreted by avant-garde pop auteur Angel Corpus Christi. Recorded as part of Angel's personal take on the Downtown NYC scene, this release brings her cover versions of this cult band on one dedicated release for the first time. Singer, songwriter and accordionist, Angel Corpus Christi has carved out a niche all her own, releasing 5 albums and numerous singles that highlight her oft-nonchalant musings over off kilter production and a post-punk-pop aesthetic. Her debut album - "I LOVE NY" was a concept collection celebrating the ground breaking music formed and released in New York during it's pre and post punk heyday of the late 60 to early 80s. Taking in the inspiration from the original punk sounds of the Velvet Underground through to her own re-take of Theme From Taxi Driver, as well as punk standards like Blank Generation, the album has become a cult classic itself. Within this collection though contained two stand-out gems in Angel's covers of Suicide's Cheree and Dream Baby Dream. For some these songs represent the high mark of Alan Vega and Martin Rev's special and ground breaking partnership and in original form have a special place in this label's heart. Featuring no less than Alan Vega on backing vocals, plus life-time partner Bruce Anderson on guitar and produced by Howard Thompson, "I Love Baby" is itself a homage from Emotional Rescue to Suicide and will hopefully be appreciated as a special release in due course.

Emotional Rescue's killer Bob Chance 7" makes a welcome return sporting some new blue artwork ** With two massive reissues from Suns of Arqa and Jaki Whitren under their belts, the fledging label Emotional Rescue have come up with the goods once again, with this remastered reissue of incredibly rare 70s psyche-funk from Bob Chance. Two versions are included: the original 7" version, driven along by a razor-sharp guitar riff and sweetly lamenting lyrics, topped off with weird cosmic synths and galloping rhythm. However, the real gem is the edit entitled "Wild It's Broken" which sharpens the focus of the guitar and adds some serious kick to the drums to create a beefy counterpart to the new age original.

Review: "Lescudjack" is one of the finest moments in Michael Chapman's epic discography. Originally featured on 1978's "Life On The Ceiling" album, the instrumental track melded the British guitarist's distinctive finger picking style with throbbing synthesizer lines and heavy space rock influences. Famously a favourite of Daniele Baldelli, and a long-standing secret weapon of Kosmiche-minded DJs, Chapman's peerless original version is joined here by a brilliant Lexx edit that subtly extends it into a more dancefloor-friendly version, with a longer opening build-up, a tasty drum break in the original, and a deliciously dubbed-out conclusion.

Review: Emotional Rescue's latest reissue project sees them collect three separate EPs of collected material from Dunkelziffer, one of Germany's best - if most underrated - bands. Arriving at the end of the Krautrock explosion of the 1970s, Dunkelziffer was formed out of the original sessions that created the classic Phantom Band, and was centred around Dominik von Senger (Golf Channel), Reiner Linke and Helmut Zerlett, but with a cast of floating members that included Jaki Liebezeit, Damo Suzuki, Olek Gelba, Wolfgang Schubert, Stefan Krachten and Matthias Keul. Making four ground breaking albums over a 6 year period, the took their cue from the classic Krautrock triumverate of heavy repetitive drumming, intricate, overlapping melody and sonic intonation, Dunkelziffer added dub, soul and jazz elements to expand the sound into the new decade. Alessandro Parisi keeps things on a distinctly new wave tip for "Aim For The Yellow Sector", and Perseus Traxx brings a bold set of machine beats and technicolour synths to "Saco Bay". Antenna finishes the EP off by creating a winsome, wavey version of "Night Ferry" for sensitive souls to do the robot to.

"Transatlantic Cable" compares the cliches of a certain type of American romance - Bogart, Sinatra, Dean - to the reality of life in West London. "They're On Me" is probably one of very few pop songs to feature double bass and the word "newsagent", while "Robert Nightman's Story" is powered by a riff on marimba and abrasive rhythm guitar.
"I Miss You", a torch song so good you'd think Julie London might have cut it. A highlight for many is "Why Are We In Love". This track is a key reason for the revival of interest in the band, with pattering rhythm part and the sweet clarinet melody, creating an atmosphere that has attracted a following among discerning DJs. "A Letter To Myself" introduced the band's new, expanded line-up adding Sally Still (bass, vocals) and Maya Gilder (keyboards), which would endure until the band stopped in 1990.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: As Emotional Rescue continues to deliver the goods for those who love discofied rarities from the 70s and 80s, here comes this EP from Kevin Harrison, originally released in 1982 and worth a pretty penny second hand. It's a wistful, proggy kind of groove that finds Harrison's voice lost in an alien phaser while the live band feel gels with synthesiser parts for a fluid kind of cosmic goodness. There's simply no arguing with the plush melodic wonderment of "Views Of The Rhine", while "Fly" is the jam the party DJs will reach for, not least for its slinky bassline. Amazing.

Review: A connection that perhaps didn't seem obvious at first but makes sense when you think about it, space rock titans get the niche reissue treatment on Emotional Rescue with Chuggy's ever prolific stable picking two deep cuts from the band's frankly intimidating back catalogue. Originally released in 1976 on "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music", "The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon" and "City Of Lagoons" are both examples of Hawkwind at their cosmic best, and not afraid to hold down a groove either. Alongside the originals, we're also treated to some wild remix versions from wayfaring astral traveler Cherrystones - lucky for us!

Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

Review: REPRESS ALERT! If you read interviews with Stuart Leath, you'll probably be aware of the amount of work he was put into tracking down Trinidadian husband-and-wife team Carl and Carol Jacobs. Some 24 months later, the fruits of his efforts have materialized in this superb reissue of their obscure (and ludicrously hard to find) 1986 electro-calypso gem "Robot Jam". It's one of those records that shouldn't work - it's effectively a fusion of replayed and re-sung bits from records by Santana, Rock Master Scott and Rappin' Duke - but still sounds brilliantly futuristic nearly 30 years after its' initial release. The two-part original is joined on the flip by a brilliantly fitting, echo-laden "re-rub" from Nick The Record and Dan Tyler, better known as one half of the Idjut Boys.

Review: Elaine Kibaro is a French singer who grew up in Tunisia before enjoying a reasonably productive career in the late 70s and through the 80s. Emotional Rescue caught on to her fine contributions to the disco world via the Pour L'Amour collection, and now they offer up a pair of alternative cuts that add to the overall legacy of her career peak. "Fajrann" is a re-vocalled version of Kibaro's biggest hit "Aurore" sung in Arabic, speaking to her Tunisian roots, while "Ne Doute Pas" appears in its instrumental form for those who want the punchy Linn Drum beats and dazzling synth lines in all their glory.

Review: The second 7" in the Konduko series reissues this mega-rarity, Noel Williams aka King Sporty's own version of Bob Marley's Concrete Jungle. The connection between Marley and Williams was long-standing, both living in the tenements of West Kingston and gaining their musical foundations as part of the Studio One, that would reach fruition when they later co-wrote Buffalo Soldier together.
Clement Dodd's organisation was more than a label, running a sound system, studio, pressing plant and its own distribution. As Deejay on the system and later releasing his debut single on the label, William's learnt his craft, taking this knowledge to Miami and replicating much - expanding the Konduko label to encompass studio, plant and distribution.

Review: Emotional Rescue do the right thing and tap up the Konduko label - an oft overlooked gem of the Miami bass scene - for one of the biggest tracks in Noel 'King Sporty' Williams' back catalogue. "Haven't Been Funked Enough" is an absolute battering ram of proto electro, staggeringly advanced for its time (it was originally released in 1982). There's also a "Rapstrumental" mix with some life-affirming instructive speech across the jam, but the real icing on the cake is Idjut Boy Nad's wild and ranging "Discomix" on the B side. It's a truly spaced out affair that sounds like it was mixed live on the desk with its rugged FX sends and woozy atmosphere.

Review: The Konduko label was a gem of early 80s Miami groove, playing host to a range of projects from Noel Williams. "Rock Attack" was originally credited to J. Griffith, but resurfaces here on Emotional Rescue with Williams' King Sporty & The Ex Tras billed at the helm. It's a firecracker of a tune, revolving around a stuttering electro bassline and the loosest, funkiest set of drums, sounding fresh as a daisy with a new lick of mastering paint. Meanwhile Faze Action sprinkle a little contemporary magic on the track, making a beautifully tripped out "Discomix" that sounds more like a cosmic dub extravaganza to these ears.

Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: The latest dusted down archival dig from Emotional Rescue is by Politrio, a short-lived new wave / post punk band from Italy who released one album in the mid 80s. The focus of this release is their cover of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," which originally appeared on the Amnesty International P.E.A.C.E Benefit Compilation in 1987. It's a wild take full of rampant guitar wailing and limber slap bass that teeters towards the 80s funk rock of Faith No More et al, and that's no bad thing at all. On the B side of this 7" Double Wave gets busy in the edit, offering up a stripped back version for the spinners.

The veteran French artist has plenty of work to explore, but it certainly helps having the curatorial instincts of a label like Emotional Rescue to guide you, and so they return to the very same year and another startling work, 24 Hrs. The A side of this album deals in shorter pieces rich in expressive instrumental conversations, as tabla, trumpet and guitar retort with a flowing, open-ended impetus. You can hear Matta's links to Don Cherry coming through in this spiritually charged style, but it's 'Sunset' on the B side which takes things further across 20 transcendental minutes of unbound musical mastery.

Review: Following their reissue of Double Talk last year, Emotional Rescue continue their run of reggae and lovers rock celebrations with another crucial cut from Red Cloud. Through the 80s, Red Cloud released on Tuff Gong, Echo and Red Stripe Records amongst others, but they also made an early appearance on seminal New Jersey label Dancefloor with an evergreen double A-side. The first track, 'Double Talk', was already reissued last year, so now it's the turn of the flip, 'I Want To Be Free'. Review: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the archives of the Dancefloor label, and also extend their appreciation for the golden age of lovers rock. This time their attention is on Red Cloud, a UK reggae act who were active through the 80s. 'Double Talk' was a hit when it was released, but its limited pressing means it's been prohibitively expensive for far too long, so this reissue should be very well received indeed. As well as the smooth as silk original version, there's a cool and deadly 'Double Dub' version to sink your ears into as well. Stretching things out in his inimitable style, DJ Duckcomb gets busy on the B-side with nearly eight minutes' worth of 'Discomix' to keep that quintessential lovers groove rolling for as long as possible.

Review: Emotional Rescue serve up a balmy curveball cut perfect for the summer months. Glen Ricks "I've Been Waiting For You" was originally released back in 1983 on the highly collectible Seraff label and recently reissued by the label (ERC081). Here, as an accompanying release to that boogie version is a 1990 digital rework for the Xterminator label. With a distinctive swung riddim and smoothly incorporated dubbed out chords, Ricks' vocal channels the most soulful Jamaican deliveries, sealing the deal on this evergreen jam that sounds great in original and version forms. DJ Duckcomb steps up with a tender "Digimix" that retains the dusty crunch of the original with just a little extra bite in the beats.

Review: Few records could sound better suited to Emotional Rescue's reissue remit than soft rock / synth pop artists turned sound healers Chris Spheeris and Paul Voudouris. "Passage" was a commission by a company doing biofeedback therapy who wanted a soundtrack for their clients' treatment, resulting in a gem of early American ambient music. Originally released in 1982 and now lovingly restored, artwork and all, Spheeris and Voudouris' three lengthy compositions are as soothing as the remit demanded. Whatever your internal ails, there's restorative qualities in these pieces that can't help but do good, even as a pure pleasure trip to let yourself melt into.

Review: Suns Of Arqa are back on Emotional Rescue with a new single that finds them building on their illustrious career fusing Indian classical approaches with dub energy. "Acid Tabla" works off a steppers thrust but equally capitalises on the textural, rhythmic delights of the titular tabla. Who better to remix such an outernational dub excursion than Adrian Sherwood? His treatment is a light, respectful tweaking that keeps the spirit of the original intact. "Asian Rebel" on the B side is a more confrontational track with its abrasive sonic splashes and unsettling bassline. Hyphen Collective then seek to make a more meditative brew out of such fiery ingredients, and their dub mix more than rises to the challenge.

Review: Emotional Rescue did the diggers another great service by gathering up the recorded material from Bordeaux synth-pop outliers Takenoko, and now they're sweetening the deal even further with this EP of wild style mixes from Dresden maverick Sneaker DJ. Picking three of the strongest tracks from the L'Amour Est Mon Arme collection, he comes up with three drastically diverse end results to suit the most adventurous selectors. The "Maquette" mix of "Lee Harvey Oswald" has a wonderfully lo-fi finish that accentuates the DIY new wave angles of Takenoko, while the "Traaans" mix of "Trans Amor Express" becomes a trippy, brittle beat excursion that should appeal to lovers of oddball 80s dub mixes. The "Dynamic" version of "John Wayne" finishes the record off in bombastic fashion, all boxy beats and powerful synth lines punching out underneath the quintessential wavey vocals.

Review: Emotional Rescue unearth yet another pearl of curiosity from the mists of the 80s here, kicking off a series looking at the work of guitarist Carl Weingarten. This album is a fine place to start, as Weingarten teams up with Walter Whitney for an engrossing exploration of ambient synth work merged with careful use of slide guitar and more besides. It's very much of its time, originally released on Multiphase in 1985, and it's as charming and naive as it is accomplished. There's a new age sweetness to the harmonic composition, but the sound palette is deceptively deep, not least thanks to Weingarten's multifaceted approaches to his instrument. Dreaming In Colours sets a promising tone for what the rest of the series holds.

After digging out that Bob Chance classic, the focus switches to something of an equally balearic nature with the release of Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright's lost folk rock album International Times. Originally released as a private press on the obscure French label Living Records back in 1983, this eight track album is filled with dusty soul nuggets which are given extra life by the silky vocal stylings of Whitren - formerly a backing singer for Alan Parson. Opening track "Stay Cool" sounds quite ahead of it's time, whilst there are some true dancefloor gems for the more adventurous DJs out there, such as the title track and the laid back bump of "Go With The Flow."

Review: Emotional Rescue continues to trawl through the bulging back catalogue of Noel Williams' Miami-based Konduko label, which the celebrated producer first launched to showcase his productions as King Sporty. 'Street Talk' hails from 1983 and saw Williams join forces with a hastily arranged group of backing musicians dubbed the Extras to craft a canny chunk of electrofunk rich in spacey synths, wild guitar solos and sweet female backing vocals. This edition pairs the original mix with the even more spaced-out dub on the A-side, with Rune Lindbaek delivering a brand new 'Discomix' on the flip. The Norwegian's version is even more spaced-out and cosmic, drenching the original's rapped vocal phrases and synth sounds and delicious amounts of reverb and delay.

Review: Emotional Rescue and Woo once again come together, this time to reissue their masterpiece, the previously cassette-only album Into The Heart Of Love. A joyous, uplifting ode to love in all it's forms, the trials and tribulations and ultimately the triumphs are all encapsulted in Woo's unique soundscapes. Of all the myriad of released and unreleased Woo recordings, Into The Heart Of Love is without a doubt their most complete and cohesive body of work. Full of Woo's quirky analogue dub electronics, there is also a very English sense of folk. With more vocals then their other albums, the structure and softness of mood quintessentially comes from the Mother Isle. Mark's guitar craft is at its most expressive, entwined with subtle bass, a breadth of clarinet and touches of piano. This is all mixed and merged beautifully with Clive's now recognisable desk and synthesiser mastery. As individual as anything you'd hear coming from the Black Ark. More peaceful and uplifting than Whichever Way You Are Going, You Are Going Wrong and encompassing than its Cosy Inside, the album presented as Into The Heart Of Love is exactly that. Drawing you into it's swirls and layers upon layers, slowly wrapping you in it's own special, spectral soundcape. It is love indeed that permeates throughout. Again and again the titles lead the way, but it's more than that. The lilting hopes, joy, optimism and peace expressed in songs like When Your Find Your Love, Sarah and The Heart Of Love show Woo in all their glory. Of all Woo's songs and craft, their best is all included. The simplicity but detailed interplay between the two brothers is as telepathic as imagined. Pushing and pulling together to represent a wondrous album. Of course, it had to be. It's Love.

Review: To accompany the reissue of Woo's Into The Heart Of Love, Emotional Rescue is releasing a limited 7" featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in
later form on their CD only, La Luna album. With the original Into The Heart Of Love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from Emotional Rescue.
Therefore, this limited edition 7" includes two of those ommited songs. The wistful English folk duet between Mark Ives and Sue Amor on Make Me Tea and it's sibling on the album, A Little Long Way. Possibly Woo's most straight forward folk song, Make Me Tea is as the title imagines a very particular English poem. Recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. However, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, Magic In The Dark that is worth the admission price alone. Taken from the CD only album, La Luna, the original's short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it's alternate demo form. A different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. The sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. Mark's vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother Clive, before Clarinets duet to a yearning finale. Woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. A one off to cherish.
