Techno
Consumed (Mark Broom's Bang Bang remix)
Consumed (Speedy J remix)
Review: It's a measure of the esteem in which Scottish producer Gary Beck is held that he has managed to attract not one but two of techno's most seminal talents for this remix package. Long-serving artist Mark Broom is going through something of a renaissance period; as his recent Acid House album for Saved showed, Broom has put the purist sounds of Pure Plastic on hold and is making more party-based material. Unsurprisingly, he brings this approach to his version of "Consumed", based on a rolling rhythm and deep filters that build to an effective and somewhat epic climax, Broom's remix also has sharp jacking beats to ensure that it doesn't end up like a light version of his King of Snakes material. Speedy J aka Jochem Paap is also in fine form. The Dutch producer's first take features rolling house beats, but allaying any doubts that he is mellowing out, he drops searing, razor-sharp percussion and waves of jagged metallic hi-hats. Paap's .Straight Faced Dub' is also sure to cause chaos: based on a woozy filter and a quaking, evil bass, the fact that it doesn't slam the listener into submission with a fast tempo makes its intense, low-end approach all the more effective.

Sequence 2
Review: Deepbass has slowly been chipping away at his dark techno craft since 2009, and it seems that the Scottish producer is finally breaking through. He does so on fellow Glaswegian Edit Select's label - coming with the honour of an Edit Select dub, if we could all be so lucky. This dub is searing techno made for big rooms, but without the headspinning confusion you get from Rrose's productions. Meanwhile, owning the B-side, Deepbass' "Sequence 1" glistens with an effulgent halo of cool sonics similar to that heard throughout Voices From The Lake's music, while "Sequence 2" is bubblier and more alive. Three big tracks from two of Scotland's big guns.

Surface To Air (Lucy remix)
Surface To Air (Edit-Select edit)
Review: Glaswegian techno royalty Anthony Scott MacKinnon allows us a timely revisit of his 2010 Edit Select pressure cranker "Surface To Air", enlisting Lucy to give it his own inimitable dust down. The Stroboscopic Artefacts main man turns in a masterful rendition that wisely retains all the thick layers of nihilistic pressure of the original, whilst nudging the tempo up ever so slightly and slowly introducing a floating, spectral tone that adds a certain haunting quality amidst the relentless arid bump. The flip has Mackinnon further revising his own work, introducing an undulating rhythmic quality that alternates with intensity as the track progresses.

The Rewipes Pt 1 (Rrose version)
The Rewipes Pt 1 (Dino Sabatini version)
Review: If there's one person other than Mike Parker that you'd want to remix seminal techno production "The Wipe" by Teste right now, it would be former Sandwell District alumnus Rrose. Just the thought of this combination is enough the to make your skin bubble, but here Rrose is more reserved than what we heard on, say, "Waterfall", with the producer instead opting to extend a plateau of climbing sound design which makes for one long boil. Dino Sabatini's remix focuses on rhythm and syncopation as opposed to mind bending modulation, which works, because where Rrose flies higher, Sabatini fathoms deeper.

The Rewipes Part 2 (Claudio PRC version)
The Rewipes Part 2 (edit select version)
The Rewipes Part 2 (edit select dub version)
Review: After one volume powerful combo of remixes, perennial techno smasher "The Wipe" gets another dose of revisions thanks to the curatorial team at Edit-Select. This time around Claudio PRC steps up with a brooding version that focuses on a strafing midrange pulse that grinds into your unconsciousness, leaving the rest of the track with plenty of room to breathe for a more transcendental effect. Edit Select himself takes things even deeper, submerging the elements into a quietly murmuring but decidedly ominous bath of deep techno. As if that wasn't deep enough, there's an extra dub version of that second remix that takes things even further out to sea.

Teste - "The Wipe" (Edit Select 2014 edit)
Edit Select & Teste - "Ascend"
Review: Teste are back, but not without reminding us why they are so revered. Their track "The Wipe, originally released in 1992, is often credited as a forbearer to a style of techno described as bassline driven, and a style long championed by Munich label Prologue. So before Teste release any new music, Edit Select has extended their famous cut so the wormhole experience of "The Wipe" can last all the more longer. The real treat though is "Ascender", a brand new production between Teste and Edit Select which is similar to "The Wipe" only it swaps foreboding sounds for something lighter and the results are transcendental.

Typhon (Svreca remix)
Typhon (Abdulla Rashim remix)
Review: Having debuted on Tony Scott's Edit Select label last year with "Typhon", the Avian co founder Ventress returns here in remixed-by-noted-contemporaries fashion. In original format, Ventress's production was that most intriguing of techno oxymoron's; the subtle peak time number. In the hands of Semantica boss Svreca, there are still notable remnants of the track's DNA, not least the underplayed filters, and Svreca also reins in the originals growling menace with stripped back, heads down results. Vaguely mysterious Swedish artist Abdullah Rashim takes a similar approach though his production has a notably murkier finish to it. Recommended!
