Vactrol-based multimode filter based on a schematic by Nyle Steiner, featuring separate inputs for lowpass, bandpass & highpass
Notes: This filter's unique feature is that different filter types are realized by injecting the audio signal at different points of the circuit. For this reason, the A-101-1 has three inputs with level control: one lowpass input which is normalized to the bandpass input, which itself is normalized to the highpass input. The level controls make it possible to mix the filters and to generate new filter types. e.g. with all three filter levels turned to maximum level you get a notch filter.

Furthermore, the cutoff frequency influences which filter type is "monitored". This way you can blend from LP over BP to HP with increasing cutoff, known as "frequency scanning". Interesting effects happen when three different audio signals are used because they are both morphed and filtered at the same time.

Vactrol based combination of resonant 12dB lowpass filter and/or VCA - inspired by the Buchla 292
Notes: A Low Pass Gate (LPG) can be a low pass filter, a VCA or a combination of both. This means both the harmonic content and volume can be controlled simultaneously which resembles the behaviour of many instruments: the louder, the more harmonics.

The A-101-2's mode of operation is set with a switch: left position is low pass, right is VCA and the combo mode is in the centre. Alternatively, you can activate the modes with gate signals which is the reason for two gate inputs; this is very interesting in combination with clock dividers or trigger sequencers.

- Gate 1 high & gate 2 low = low pass mode
- Gate 1 low & gate 2 high = VCA mode
- Both Gate 1 & 2 high = combo mode

The A-101-2 has an aggressive sound, compared to other LPGs and its resonance goes up to self-oscillation which not many LPGs offer. The oscillation is rather dirty and far from being a sine wave.

Voltage-controlled low-pass filter with 24dB/octave slope - 8HP
Notes: The A-105 is a 24dB low pass filter that bases on the SSM 2044 chip that was used amongst others in following units: Korg Polysix, Korg Mono/Poly, Fairlight II, PPG Wave 2.2 und 2.3, Emu SP-1200, Siel DK600, Siel Opera 6. The first Prophets used the SSM2040 - the precedessor of the 2044 - that generates a very similar sound. The filter convinces with a very powerful sound. The resonance starts quite early to colour the signal and makes a big range of sounds possible up to self-oscillation. The latter provides a very clean sine wave - no wonder, because the SEM2044 chip wasn't designed only as a filter core but also as a sine wave oscillator.

The A-105 is based on the patented so-called "true open loop design" which generates a very fat sound. The filter works with a slope of -24dB per octave and provides voltage controllable resonance up to self-oscillation. The audio input is sensitive so you can distort the audio signal at the input if desired. there's a volume control at the audio input, potentiometers for setting the cutoff frequency and resonance as well as attenuators at the CV inputs for cutoff and resonance.

Doepfer A-106-1 Xtreme Voltage Controlled Lowpass & Highpass Filter Module

MS20 low/high-pass filter - 14HP
Notes: Module A-106-1 is a unique low/high pass filter and has its origin in Doepfer's experiments to build an MS20 filter clone. In contrast to other filter designs, it has different audio inputs for low and high pass, but only one audio output. The type of filter (12dB low pass, 6dB high pass or any mix) is defined by the shares of the audio signal fed to the corresponding inputs. Even two different audio signals can be used as low and high pass input. A special feature is the polarizer at the high pass input that allows to add/subtract the high pass to/from the low pass share, leading to pseudo band pass and notch responses.

Another special feature is the clipping controls, which allow independent adjustment of the positive and negative clipping level. The resonance goes up to self-oscillation, but with a clearly different behaviour than on other filters. At certain resonance and clipping settings the self-oscillation generates rectangle or short sawtooth shaped pulses.

In general, the A-106-1 is a very strange and awesome filter and far away from being perfect (e.g non-linear control scale, self-oscillation with all sorts of waveforms except sine, a lot of roaring, rattling, noise or other unpredictable sounds at high distortion and resonance settings, high distortion or audio level overrides the resonance, significant CV feedthrough). But the A-106-1 has a lot of character - probably much more than any other filter of the A-100 - and is able to generate filter sweeps which are not possible with any other filter.

Classic Moog voltage-controlled lowpass filter - 12HP
Notes: Module A-108 is a completely new voltage-controlled low pass filter based on the well-known transistor ladder (Moog ladder). The module has internally an 8-stage low pass filter with different slopes available: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 dB per octave. In addition, it features a band pass output (i.e. band pass with transistor ladder). In the factory, the 4 low pass outputs of the A-108 are internally connected to the filter stages 6, 12, 24 and 48dB.

Resonance (Emphasis or Q) can be adjusted manually right up to self-oscillation, in which case the filter will behave like a sine wave oscillator. The A-108 features an external feedback input that enables the insertion of additional modules into the feedback path (e.g. VCA for voltage-controlled resonance or phaser/frequency shifter for phase/frequency shifting effects). The socket is normalized and internally connected to the 48dB low pass output if no cable is inserted into the feedback socket.

The frequency can be adjusted manually, or by voltage control. Three CV inputs (CV1, CV2, CV3) are available. CV2 and CV3 are equipped with attenuators.

The filter audio input is very sensitive so that distortion - if desired - is possible even with normal A-100 levels (e.g. VCO output). Self-oscillation will break off at high distortion levels as the internal feedback signal is drown out by the distorted audio signal. This feature may intentionally be used to create new sounds.

In combination with the Voltage Controlled Mixer A-135 and the Morphing Controller A-144 a filter with voltage-controlled slope can be realized (i.e. controlling the slope from 6dB to 48dB via CV).

Doepfer A-110-1 Standard VCO Module

Standard VCO providing two CV inputs for pitch, an octave switch, four waveforms with separate outputs, pulse width modulation & hard sync - 10HP
Notes: Module A-110-1 is a voltage-controlled oscillator. This VCO's frequency range is about eight octaves (ca. 15Hz ... 8kHz). It can produce four waveforms simultaneously: rectangle, sawtooth, triangle, and sine wave (triangle and sine shapes are not perfect, see remark below). The output levels are typically 8Vpp for saw and rectangle, and 10Vpp for triangle and sine. The frequency or pitch of the VCO is determined by the position of the octave (Range) switch and tuning (Tune) knob, and by the voltage present at the CV inputs. Frequency modulation (FM) of the VCO is therefore a possibility. Footage (the octave of the fundamental) is set by the Range control in five steps, and Fine tuning controlled by the Tune knob by about +/-1 one semitone (can be modified for a wider range).

You can control the pulse width of the square wave either by hand, or by voltage control - Pulse Width Modulation or PWM.

For more detailed information please look at the user's manual A110_man.pdf. In addition, the A-110 service manual is available as an example for the A-100 service manual that is available at extra charges. This document describes also how to modify the sensitivity of the tune control, how to re-adjust the 1V/octave scale and the frequency offset (i.e. the absolute pitch). Such modifications should be carried out by experienced users only!

The core of the A-110-1 is a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by internal waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinite fast but takes a little bit of time the derived waveforms triangle and sine are not perfect! At the top of the waveform they have a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converters. The sine is derived from the triangle by a simple diode-based converter and the sine shape is not perfect (only a rounded triangle).

If a perfect triangle is required, the A-111-1 is recommended. For a perfect sine wave the quadrature LFO/VCO A-143-9 is recommended.

Basic voltage-controlled oscillator for the A-100 modular system
Notes: Module A-110-2 is a low-cost voltage-controlled oscillator. It's a slightly reduced version of the standard VCO A-110-1. Compared to the A-110-1, the A-110-2 has no sine output and the (expensive) octave rotary switch is replaced by a 3-position toggle switch. In return, the A-110-2 is equipped with an additional linear FM input and a soft sync input. A jumper is used to select the range of the tune control between about 1/2 octave and about 4 octaves. The width of the module is only 8 HP compared to the 10 HP of the A-110-1.

All other features are essentially the same as for the A-110-1.

Explanation of the jumpers and trimming potentiometers:

- JP2: CV connection to A-100 bus
- JP3: range of Tune control (installed = about 4 octaves, not installed = about 1/2 octave)
- JP4: AC/DC coupling of the linear FM input (installed = DC coupling, not installed = AC coupling)
- P5: 1V/Oct scale
- P6: frequency offset
- P7: high-end trim
- P8: adjustment +1 Oct. range switch
- P9: adjustment -1 Oct. range switch
- P10: temperature VCO heater

The core of the A-110-2 is - like the A-110-1 - a sawtooth oscillator (in contrast to the A-111-1, which is based on a triangle oscillator). The other waveforms are derived from the sawtooth by waveform converters. As the sawtooth reset (i.e. the back-to-zero slope) is not infinitely fast but takes a little bit of time the triangle is not perfect! At the bottom of the waveform it has a small glitch or notch that is caused by the sawtooth reset and cannot be eliminated by the waveform converter. If a perfect triangle is required, the A-111-1 is recommended.

The sawtooth output of the A-110-21 has a falling (or negative) slope. The front panel shows erroneously a rising (or positive) slope. This has no influence on the sound but becomes important when the module is used as an LFO or is mixed with the sawtooth output of another VCO.

The control voltage applied to the socket 1V/Oct is added to the control voltage coming from the bus (interruptible by removing the jumper JP2). Connecting a cable to the socket 1V/Oct does not interrupt the bus CV connection!

Thru-zero quadrature VCO with Sine/Cosine core - special edition
Notes: This analogue VCO is well versed in the art of deep and beautiful thru-zero frequency modulation, allowing the frequency to stop when CVs with 0V are applied, and even to go backwards when modulated with negative CVs.

The term "quadrature" refers to simultaneously available sine and cosine waves at individual outputs. The VCO is sine based i.e. no waveshaping is used to derive the sine; for that reason, the sound is really clear and shows a minimum of distortion and overtones.

The module has two control sections:

The exponential section consists of the XTune control, the 1V/Oct input and the XFM input with the corresponding attenuator XFM.

The exponential control voltage is the sum of these three voltages. The linear section consists of the LTune control and the LFM input with the corresponding attenuator LFM. The linear control voltage is the sum of these two voltages.

The main advantage of the A-110-4 compared to other Thru Zero VCOs is that the design uses a sine/cosine core. The sine/cosine waves are not derived from other waveforms (e.g. sawtooth or triangle) by means of waveshaping. Rather the sine and cosine waves are the core of the VCO which results in very pure waves with a minimum of distortion and overtones.

With it's both control possibilities, linear and exponential, as well as it's thru-zero ability, the VCO is perfectly suited for all types of FM applications.

Notes: Module A-121-3 is functionally nearly identical to module A-121-2. Only the distances between the controls and sockets are smaller and rubberized, small rotary knobs are used. Therefore the front panel width is only 4HP compared to 8HP of the A-121-2. In the first place it is planned for applications where only limited space is available. The only functional difference compared to the A-121-2 is the missing attenuator for the resonance CV input CQ.

Notes: A-135-2 is a miniature version of the A-135-1. Behind a front panel with 8 HP only four linear VCAs (voltage controlled amplifiers) and a voltage controlled mixer based on the VCAs are available.

Controls, In/Outputs and Functions of each VCA:

- All output: sum of all VCA outputs, regardless of inserted plugs into the VCA outputs
- The maximal amplification is about 0.6 to avoid clipping at the mixer outputs (otherwise the outputs may distort with 15Vpp signals at each signal input and full amplifications)

Special functions of the voltage controlled mixers (selectable by internal jumpers):

- Dual Stereo VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects also VCA3 and the control unit of VCA2 (L2 + CV2) affects also VCA4, the control units of VCA2 and VCA4 are out of operation
- Quad VCA: In this case the control unit of VCA1 (L1 + CV1) affects all four VCAs. The control units of VCA2, VCA3 and VCA4 are out of operation. In this mode the module has the same function as module A-132-2. That's why module A-132-2 will be discontinued.
- Normalling of the signal inputs: by means of internal jumpers signal input 1 can be normalled to signal input 2, signal input 2 to signal input 3 and signal input 3 to signal input In 4. That way the same input signal can be distributed to four different channels by means of control voltages (e.g. quadrophonic distribution of audio signals). Suitable control voltage sources are e.g. A-144 (Morphing Controller) or A-143-9 (Quadrature LFO).

Voltage-controlled wave form multiplier - 14HP
Notes: A-137 is a voltage controlled Wave Multiplier. The basic idea of a wave multiplier is to multiply the waveform of an incoming signal (e.g. triangle/saw/sine from a VCO) within one period of the waveform. This leads to additional harmonics of the incoming signal. The period and consequently the pitch of the signals remains unchanged (in contrast to frequency multiplication e.g. with the PLL module A-196).

The A-137 works as a kind of "inverse low pass filter", i.e. it adds a lot of harmonics to a signal that contains none or only a few harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle waveform). In contrast to that a low pass filter (e.g. A-120) removes harmonics from a signal that contains a lot of harmonics (e.g. saw or rectangle waveform). Consequently the best results are obtained in combination with input signals poor in harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle). The A-137 can be used with signals rich in harmonics too (e.g. saw) but the effect is not as remarkable as for triangle or sine waves. For rectangle signals none or only little effects are obtained.

The A-137 is a very sophisticated wave multiplier that offers much more features, more controls and more waveform manipulations than other wave multipliers available so far. In addition all parameters are both manually adjusted and controlled by external voltages. These are the features of the module:

The Multiples parameter (manual and ext. CV) defines the number of basic wave multiplications within one period. With the Folding Level and Symmetry parameter (both manual and ext. CV) the upper and lower clipping levels of the wave folder units are controlled. The Harmonics parameter (manual and ext. CV) adds some harmonic content by sharpening the waveform edges and adding overshoot peaks. It works a little bit like the resonance control of a VCF. The module is fully DC coupled, i.e. even control signal can be processed with the modules.

To activate the envelope, there are gate and retrigger inputs.

The A-141-2 is equipped with a normal and an inverted output. Both connectors work with a fixed level. Furthermore, there is a third, variable output. Here, before reaching the out socket, the envelope signal is fed to a voltage controlled VCA. - Perfect for velocity CV signals. A jumper on the circuit board allows you to choose between a unipolar and a bipolar mode of operation. Other jumpers make it possible to normalize the CV inputs.

Last but not least, there are two digital outputs called EOA and EOR, which emit a gate signal after the attack respectively release phase. This is useful for delayed triggering of other envelopes. By connecting EOA or EOR output to the gate input, you can make the A-141-2 oscillate like a LFO. Adjustments to the envelope times change the frequency and waveform. If you connect the Attack CV input to the inverted output or the Decay respectively Release CV input to the normal output, you can alter the curve characteristics.

In the factory a dummy jumper is installed on the pin header JP7 "Dummy". JP7 has no function and is used only for "parking" of the jumper. Simply remove the jumper from JP7 and plug it on JP6. JP6 is located behind the CV control.

VCA: This is a linear VCA that can be switched to "normal" VCA (i.e. kind of a voltage controlled attenuator) or voltage controlled polarizer ("VCA Mode" switch). In the "normal" VCA mode amplification +1 is achieved with about +5V control voltage. In polarizer mode the amplification ranges from about -0.5 (i.e. inverted signal with about 50% level) with 0V CV to +0.5 (i.e. non-inverted signal with about 50% level) with +5V CV. With about +2.5V CV the signal is suppressed. Details about the functioning of a voltage controlled polarizer can be found in the description of the module A-133. In this mode the VCA can be treated also a DC coupled ring modulator (similar to A-114).

The VCA of the A-147-2 has three sockets available: "In" (signal input), "Out" (signal output) and "CV" (control voltage input).

The Triangle Output of the LFO is normalled to the VCA signal input by means of the switching contact of the "VCA In" socket. If another LFO waveform (or any other signal) should be processed by the VCA the corresponding signal has to be patched to the "VCA In" socket. The VCA can be used also independently from the LFO and the Delay CV. In this case the VCA sockets In, Out and CV have to be patched accordingly. The VCA can be used also as waveshaper for the LFO signals (e.g. by patching VCA In and VCA CV to different LFO signals, if necessary via attenuator A-183-1 or offset generator/attenuator A-183-2).

Attack/Delay: The third sub-unit of the module is a simple, voltage controlled envelope generator that has only the parameter "Delay" (or Attack) available. This unit generates a linear increasing voltage that starts from 0V after each Delay Reset until it reaches about +5V. Then the voltage remains at +5V until the next Delay Reset occurs. Notes: Module A-149-1 is the first module of the A-149-x range. In this group we present by popular request several functions of Don Buchla's "Source of Uncertainty 265/266" (SOU) modules that cannot be realized with existing A-100 modules. Many functions of Buchla's 265 and 266 SOU can be realized with existing A-100 modules. For details please refer to A-100 patch examples.

Module A-149-1 has available four different analogue random control voltages that are generated in different ways.

The "Quantized Random Voltages" section has available 2 CV outputs: "N+1 states" and "2N states". N is an integer number in the range 1...6 that can be adjusted with the manual control (Man N) and an external control voltage CVN with attenuator. Whenever the rising edge of the input clock signal (Clk In) appears a new random voltage is generated at the N+1 resp. 2N output. The N+1 output is capable to generate N+1 different voltage levels (or states), the 2N output up to 2N different states. If for example N is set to 4 the N+1 output generates up to 5, the 2N output 16 different states. The voltage steps of the 2N output are adjusted to 1/12 V in the factory. Consequently, exact semitones can be obtained in combination with a VCO. The voltage steps of the n+1 output are adjusted to 1.0 V in the factory corresponding to octave intervals in combination with a VCO. For each output a trimming potentiometer is available on the pc board that enables the user to select other voltage steps for the output in question.

Even the "Stored Random Voltages" section has 2 stepped CV outputs available: one with even voltage distribution of the max. 256 output states and second one with adjustable voltage distribution probability. The distribution probability is adjusted by a manual control (Man D) and an external control voltage CVD with attenuator. With the control set fully counter-clockwise most of the random voltages will be low magnitude but even medium and high magnitude voltages may appear but with smaller probability. As the control is turned to the right (or a positive control voltage appears at the CVD input) the distribution moves through medium to high magnitude voltage probability. The symbol at the lower jack socket shows this coherence graphically. The voltage range is 0...+5V for both outputs of the "Stored Random Voltages" section. For each output a trimming potentiometer is available on the pc board that enables the user to select another voltage range for the output in question.

The A-149-1 can be extended by 8 random digital voltages with the A-149-2 Digital Random Voltages module.

Notes: Module A152 is a very useful switching and T&H module. It combines a voltage addressed 1-to-8 multiplexer and 8 fold T&H that can be used as kind of an analogue shift register too. The active in/output is displayed by a LED. The digital output of the currently addressed step outputs "high". The remaining digital outputs are low.

Instead of voltage control even clock/reset controlled addressing of the active step is possible. The rising edge of each clock signal causes an advance to the next state. The rising edge of the reset signal resets to step 1.

The sum of the voltages coming from the manual Address control and the CV input define the currently addressed step of the 3 sub-devices. If the module is controlled by clock and reset the control voltage has to remain unchanged as the CV control has priority over the clock/reset control (e.g. simply turn the CV control fully counter-clockwise and do not touch the Address control knob).

Sub-device #1 is the bidirectional 8-fold multiplexer (kind of an electronical 8-fold rotary switch). Bidirectional means that it works into both directions like a mechanical rotary switch: the common socket may work as an output that is connected to one of the 8 inputs that are e.g. connected to modulation or audio sources. But the common socket may even function as input. In this case the signal applied to the common socket is output to the currently addressed single socket. The voltage range of the in/outputs to be switched is the full A-100 voltage range -12V....+12V. All A-100 signals can be switched without any restrictions.

Sub-device #2 is the addressed 8-fold T&H. The signal at the common T&H input is connected to the addressed T&H output. As soon as a new output is addressed the last voltage is stored at the output (Track&Hold function). The T&H section of the A-152 allows the emulation of the "toggling T&H" function of the Buchla module 266 "Source of Uncertainty". Only the first two T&H outputs of the A-152 are required for this application. This unit can be used also as kind of an analogue (shift) register. The difference to a "real" analogue shift register is that the sampled output voltages are not shifted to the next output but remain allocated to the same output. But in some cases (e.g. controlling the pitch of 3 VCOs by 3 output voltages of the A-152) the result is the same.

Sub-device #3 is the digital output section. The digital output of the currently addressed turns to "high". All other digital outputs are low. The digital outputs can be used to trigger e.g. envelope generators or to control the reset input in the clocked mode to reduce the number of addressed stages.

Notes: Module A-160-5 is a voltage controlled clock multiplier. The incoming clock signal (socket Clock In) is multiplied by a factor that depends upon the control voltage on socket CV In (0...+5V) and the position of the Mode switch. The multiplied clock signal is available at the socket Clock Out. According to the position of the Mode switch different clock multiplying factors are assigned to the control voltage. With 0V CV no clock output is generated. This state is indicated by "all LEDs off". With increasing CV integer factors (left position of the mode switch), power of two factors (middle position) or a mix of both (right position) are obtained. Nine LEDs are used to show the currently selected multiplying factor. In addition two LEDs are used to display the incoming and outgoing clock signal.

A manual control is used to adjust the clock multiplication factor manually without the need of an external control voltage. The voltage generated by this control ("Manual") is normalled to the CV In socket. As long as no plug is inserted into the CV In socket the clock multiplication factor is adjusted by means of the manual control knob and displayed by the LEDs. For dynamic applications (like the ratcheting function described below) the manually generated CV is overwritten by the external CV which has to be fed into the CV In socket.

The module can be used for all kind of clock multiplying applications. One important example is the generation of so-called ratcheting sequences. The band Tangerine Dream is famous for this kind of sequences. A normal sequencer generates only one gate signal per step. A ratcheting sequence may have also more than one gate pulses per step. This function can be obtained by using the A-160-5: one CV output of the sequencer is used to define the number of gate pulses per step. If the control of the step in question is fully CCW the generated CV is 0V and no gate signal is generated (mute of the step). When the control of the step in question is turned clockwise one, two or more gate pulses are generated depending upon the position of the mode switch and the voltage generated by the CV at this step.

Technical note: Due to the nature of clock multiplying it takes a few input clock pulses until the clock output is stable. One has to average a few input clock pulses to generate the multiplied clock output signal. Even when the input clock frequency changes it will take a few cycles until the output clock signal is correct as the module cannot foresee the future of the clock input signal. The generated clock output signal is derived from the last few cycles of the clock input signal. Consequently the module should be driven only by a clock signal with constant or slowly changing frequency.

Notes: Module A-171-2 is a voltage controlled slew limiter with a lot of additional features beyond a simple slew limiter. It's mostly a licensed copy of Ken Stones VCS which is in turn based on the Serge VCS.

Typical applications:

- VC Slew Limiter / VC Portamento / VC Low Pass Gate:

Cycle switch = off, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket: Voltage controlled Slew limiter or portamento generator: the signal applied to the signal input is "slewed". The slew up and down times are controlled manually by means of the Up and Down controls, the effect of the CV Up and CV Down control voltages are controlled by the CV Up and CV Down controls, in exponential mode these controls also affect the slew shape (see symbols at the CCW and CW positions of the controls).

If an audio signal is applied an short slew rates are chosen the module works as a simple VCF/VCA combo.

- A/D Envelope Generator / Pulse Delay / Subharmonic Generator:

Cycle switch = off, trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Simple Attack/Decay envelope Generator, the rise and fall times are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope of the envelope, the exp. CV input can be used to change both attack and decay simultaneously.

At the End output a pulse appears as the end of the envelope is reached (less than about 20mV), this can be used as a pulse delay.

If a series of triggers are applied to the VCS faster than the total rise and fall times, the module will divide the incoming signal by a whole number. In the audio range the output will be the sub-harmonic series.

- VCLFO / VCO:

Cycle switch = on, no trigger signal applied to Trig socket, no input signal: Voltage controlled LFO/VCO, the rise and fall times of the waveform are controlled like the slew up/down times above, including the shape of the falling/rising slope
the exp. CV input can be used like the CV input of a VCO or VCLFO, the response is exponential but not exactly 1V/oct.

- Conversion into MIDI control change messages is possible with the A-192.

If two or more A-178 are used the distance between the modules/antennas should be at least 40-50 cm. Otherwise the antennas may affect each other.

Notes: A-180-9 is another simple but useful tool. It can be used to connect up to 14 signals between different cases by means of standard network cables (RJ45). These cables are available all over world smoothly in different lengths and colours. From the factory two black network cables with 0.5 m length are enclosed.

The upper network connector is wired to the eight sockets 1-8, the lower to the six sockets A-F. That way it's possible to pre-patch different cases and connect signals, that are required in all cases (e.g. clock, start/stop, master CV) by means of one or two cables only instead of 14 individual patch cables. When only eight signals are required only the upper network connector is required and the sockets 1-8 are used. When more than eight signals have to be patched both network connectors have to be used. It's also possible to wire the upper and lower network to different cases (i.e. signals 1-8 to external case #1 and signals A-F to external case#2).

The module is fully passive (no power supply required) and simply wires the 14 sockets to 14 pins of the network connectors.

Notes: Module A-184-1 is the combination of three functions:

- Ring Modulator

The same functions are actually already available in other modules (e.g. A-114, A-148, A-170). But in many systems it's not necessary to have two ring modulators (A-114) or two S&H units (A-148) or two slew limiters (A-170) available. That's why we have compiled these function in one small 4 HP module.

The upper section is nothing but half of an A-114, i.e. a ring modulator with the usual X/Y inputs and the X*Y output. Inputs and outputs of this sub-unit are AC coupled, i.e. suitable only for audio signals. A detailed explanation of a ring modulator can be found on the A-114 info page.

The lower section is a Sample & Hold (S&H) / Track & Hold (T&H) unit (same as half of an A-148) followed by a slew limiter (same as the upper section the A-170). A toggle switch is used to set the mode to S&H or T&H. In S&H mode the unit picks out a sample from the voltage at the SH input at the rising edge of the trigger signal input. In T&H mode the output follows the input voltage as long as the level of the trigger signal is high. As soon as the trigger signal turns low, the last voltage is stored. The trigger input is internally normalled to high, i.e. the unit works just as a slew limiter in T&H mode when no trigger signal is applied.

Notes: Module A-188-1 is a so-called Bucket Brigade Device module.

BBDs have been used to delay audio signals before digital delays dethroned the BBD based effect units. But BBDs have some very unique advantages (or disadvantages dependent on the point of view) over the digital counterpart which result from the special properties of the BBDs. BBD circuits can be treated as a chain of Sample&Hold units (S&H) which pass on their voltages to the next S&H in the chain at each clock pulse.

In any case the sounds generated by module A-188-1 are very special. Typical applications are: Flanger, Chorus, Analog Delay or Karplus/Strong synthesis. But as the A-188-1 has a lot of very unique features (voltage controlled clock rate / delay time with extreme range, polarity switches for the CV inputs, feedback and BBD out/mix, clock and CV output of the high speed VCO, BBD clock input, feedback insert, feedback up to self-oscillation) a lot of unusual applications can be realized with the module (e.g. delay controlled by ADSR, envelope, random or sequencer with positive or negative effect).

The A-188-1 also has no built-in anti-aliasing filter in order not to limit the possibilities of the module. For this the CV out is intended.

This module comes without BBD circuit. The final adjustment is possible only with the BBD circuit used in the module. Electronic experience and measuring equipment (digital multi-meter, oscilloscope, frequency meter) are required.

Touching the sensor with a finger generates a control voltage CV1 that is proportional to the position of the finger. The scale (i.e. the relation between position difference and voltage difference) is adjustable with a potentiometer at the front panel. A hold switch is used to determine if the CV voltage is held after removing the finger (hold = on) or if the CV voltage jumps to 0V (hold = off). In the last case (hold = off) a gate signal is derived from the CV voltage whenever a finger touches the sensor (e.g. for triggering an envelope generator).

A sensitive pressure sensor located below the position sensor generates a second control voltage CV2 that increases with higher pressure of the finger. Even for CV2 the scale is adjustable. A second gate signal is triggered as soon as the pressure exceeds a certain value. The gate threshold is adjustable at the front panel.

The sensors are located in a separate metal frame (length about 600 mm, width about 30 mm, height about 18 mm, weight: about 900 g, colour: silver-grey). The connection between the module and the sensor frame is made by a 4 pin cable (same as used for USB connections).

Typical applications:

- Trautonium manual, the string is replaced by the position sensor that is much easier to use and cheaper than the string. In combination with the Subharmonic Oscillator A-113, the Trautonium Filter A-104 and some auxiliary modules a complete Trautonium replica may be realized. In combination with the Quantizer A-156 exact semitone intervals are possible.

Notes: Module A-156 is a Dual Control Voltage Quantizer. A quantizer converts a continuous control voltage in the range 0...+10V into a stepped output voltage in the same voltage range (i.e. only certain voltages occur). Normally 1/12 V steps are used to obtain semitone steps. Quantizer 2 of the A-156 allows has more sophisticated quantizing modes like major scale (i.e. only voltages corresponding to the major scale), minor scale, major chord, minor chord, fundamental + fifth and addition of seventh or sixth when chords are selected. Only those voltages appear at the CV output which comply with the selection rule (e.g. minor chord with seventh). The mode setting of quantizer 2 is done with 3 switches (1-0-1 type with middle position). From the factory quantizer 1 is working in the semitone mode. But there is a jumper on the pc board that can be changed so that even quantizer 1 uses the same scale as quantizer 2.

For each quantizer the following in/outputs are available:

- Control voltage input (CV In): The input for the continuous voltage to be quantized
- Control voltage output (CV Out): The output of the quantized voltage
- Trigger input (Trig.In): If this jack is left open the quantizer is working permanently. If a rectangle voltage is applied quantisation happens only at the rising edge of the signal (e.g. from an LFO or MIDI-to-Sync interface). Thus the quantizing can be synchronized with other events
- Trigger output (Trig.Out): Whenever a quantisation happens (i.e. a new voltage is generated at the CV Out) a positive pulse occurs at this output. It may be used to trigger an envelope generator (ADSR) or for triggering other modules (sequential switch A-151, trigger divider/sequencer A-160/161, trigger delay A-162, ...). If none of these functions are used the jack is left open

On top of that the A-156 is provided with a common transpose CV input having an additive effect on both quantizers. This input is quantized in semitone steps. A typical application is the transposition of a sequence generated by the A-155 by a second control voltage (e.g. coming from the MIDI-CV interface A-190).

Typical applications:

- Quantizing the CV sequence generated by an A-155 (semitone, only major scale, only minor scale and so on)
- Quantizing the voltage coming from the Trautonium Manual / Ribbon Controller A-198, Theremin A-178 or Light-to-CV module A-179 to get accurate semitones or major/minor scale tones
- Arpeggio-like effects with LFO, random, noise, envelope generators as CV sources (for negative or symmetrical voltages an offset must be added, e.g. with the offset/attenuator module A-129-3, to obtain positive voltages for the A-156 input)

Notes: Module A-199 is a spring reverb module. The reverb effect is electronically simulated by means of 3 spiral springs. Spring reverb systems have a very characteristic sound that is based on the (insufficient) mechanical properties of the springs like signal delays, audio resonances, limited frequency range, acoustic feedback behaviour, sensitivity to mechanical shocks and others.

The 3-spring system used in the A-199 ensures a "dense" reverb because of the different properties of the three springs.

The A-199 implies some special features that are not self-evident for spring reverb units:

The reverb signal can be fed back to the input using the Feedback control. Even self-oscillation of the springs similar to the self-oscillation of filters is available. The feedback loop can lead even via external modules like VCA, VCF, phaser, frequency shifter, vocoder, distortion/waveshaper, ring modulator and others. In this case the reverb output of the A-199 is connected to the input of the external module(s) and the output of the external module(s) is fed back to the Ext. Feedback In socket of the A-199. This socket contains a switch that interrupts the internal feedback loop as soon as a plug is inserted.

Another feature is the Emphasis control. This enables the adjustment of the accentuation of middle frequencies (around ~ 2kHz).

With the Mix control the relation between original and reverb signal appearing at the mix output is adjusted.

Using all these features very extreme and unusual effects can be generated with the A-199.
