Review: Given his prolific nature, it's perhaps surprising to find that 5 is actually Medhi Djebali's debut album. The title was apparently chosen as both a nod to the fifth anniversary of his self-titled label, and as a reflection of the number of months it took the Parisian to record it. As you might expect, it's an enjoyable collection of largely club-friendly cuts, with Djebali offering nods towards Robsoul style tech-house ("Nineties Playground", "Mister Bastard"), spacey ambience ("Heartgroover", "The Other Night"), acid (the funk-fuelled "D.B Cooper", "God's Dreams"), and warm, early morning deep house ("Seven Blessings", "Ideal Dawn"). To round things off, he also includes a head-nodding chunk of dreamy instrumental hip-hop (John Dimas collaboration "Suzaku").

Review: To date, Djebali's reputation has been built entirely on the quality of his vinyl-only releases. Ideal Juice actually marks his first release on a digital format, and gathers together brand new versions of material previously released on wax (thus sidestepping potential complaints from those that copped his 'vinyl only' 12" singles). Predictably, there's much evidence of the trademark brand of dancefloor-ready basement funk that has made the Parisian one of deep house's most name-checked producers in recent times. Highlights are plentiful, and include the U.S garage swing and French Touch loops of "This Ultimate Dare", the tipsy synths and low-slung pulse of "O'riginal Rude Boy", and the eyes-closed deep house-soul of "Hunting Back".

  1. Ideal Juice (Cab Drivers mix) (7:54)
  2. O'riginal Rude Boy (Alci mix) (7:47)
Review: Djebali's back again: does this guy ever sleep? His eponymous imprint brings the goods again, this time with some sweet remixes. "Ideal Juice" gets a makeover by Berlin legends Cab Drivers and has all the hallmarks of their sound: deep rolling bass, buzzing synths and hiss and the unmistakeable and shuffle of the 808. On the flip, Switzerland's Alci's remix of "O'riginal Rude Boy" is so funky it's not funny. Both the original and the Tuccillo remix were good, but this version totally owns both of them.
