  4. Forces Of Nature (Radio Slave New Age Of Love remix - part II) (6:38)
Review: Crosstown Revels does a fine job of serving up accessible electronic music that is always built with a leftfield perspective. It is Amberoom featuring Blakkat & BabyGirl who take care of this new single, a vocal house delight that will likely form the centrepiece of plenty of epic tech house sets this summer. The airy vocal is spine tingling and heavenly, the drums deep and the bass warm and rooted to the floor. Lucas Frota & Blakkat remix into a more tribal and percussive style then Radio Slave offers a couple of post rave, old school breakbeat laced versions with dreamy pads that could take you up or bring you back down depending on the setting.

Review: He might now be a headline DJ who plays only the biggest clubs and festivals in the world but there was a time when Jamie Jones was firmly entrenched in the underground. During those years he turned out some fresh and spaced out house and tech on various labels including Crosstown. Damian Lazarus's label is where he put out his Don't You Remember The Future album back in 2009 and listening back now it has aged well. The sounds are fresh, the grooves otherworldly and the bass and drum work very much in the signature bump and grind style championed by Jones. Well worth picking up, this.

Review: Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases of 2020, legendary UK producer DJ Krust makes a comeback with his first release in 14 years, and rather surprisingly on Crosstown Rebels - of all labels. While we all know Damian Lazarus' established imprint is anything but drum and bass, it is well known that he was an early champion of the sound, long before his tenure at City Rockers in the early '00s when he embraced 'electroclash' - but that's another story. It's clear that Krust created some of the most seminal records in the genre throughout the nineties and noughties, and he is back in fine form on The Edge Of Everything, having explored radical new philosophies and creative processes. Minimalist arrangements as heard on tracks like 'Constructive Ambiguity' hark back to his signature sound of the aforementioned period, while he also explores more experimental minded beats as heard on 'Antigravity Love' and proper darkside rolling drama exemplified on 'Deep Fields Of Liars'.

Review: 14 years in the making! Krust's follow up to 'Hidden Knowledge' is every bit as diverse, uncompromising and explorative as you'd hope. Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of '7 Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Play it edge to edge.

Constructive Ambiguity
Cat: CRM 240. Rel: 10 Sep 20
Drum & Bass / Jungle
  1. Constructive Ambiguity (12:07)
  2. Tree Of Life (10:56)
Review: The Bristol scientist returns! After a smattering of outings on the likes of Doc Scott's 31, one of drum & bass music's most important and influential boundary-breakers is about to drop his first album in 14 years... The Edge Of Everything drops on Crosstown Rebels in November, and here's the first teaser: 'Constructive Ambiguity', a cinematic 12 minute opus, it groans and yearns with a solemn musicality before eventually exploding in a two-step tear-out. 'Tree Of Life', meanwhile, is a much more militant piece of work with its hammering kicks, ominous drone and fearlessness. War music, pure and simple.

TEOE Remixes 2
Cat: CRM 245. Rel: 22 Dec 20
Drum & Bass / Jungle
  1. It's A Lot (Calibre remix) (5:49)
  2. Only God Can Tell (LCY remix) (6:14)
  3. 7 Known Truths (Flynn remix) (3:16)
Review: You could do a lot worse than this when trying to find an EP that hits its nail on the head of a British dance music scene in late-2020. Drum 'n' bass mogul Krust offering up his originals for a trilogy of remixes that represent a breadth of noises, not to mention some pretty strong emotions - from frustration and anxiety to reflection and rave-y love.

Starting with the latter, fellow 170-don Calibre delivers a typically soulful, warm, liquid cut that's always going to have broad appeal. Bass experimenter LCY does the opposite, all abrasive EBM sounds and intense, broken rhythms, with Flynn stepping in for the final part of the triptych - a classy slice of sparse and system-troubling dubstep. A very strong selection that's going to keep a variety heads interested.

Start Over
  1. Start Over
  2. Start Over (dub)
Review: Gorgon City take a break from their 2012-style donk house style a-la Jess Glynne or Clean Bandit, this time opting for a deeper mood while bringing superproducer Damian Lazarus and singer Leia Contois into their orbit. Dreamy and delirious, 'Start Over' opines for better times, with Contois wishing deeply for a memory-erasing do-over. On the B-side, Lazarus and City go Italo-trance, lending even washier lucidity to the whole song.

  11. Tomorrow We Can Start Again
Review: On this second album from his Ancient Moons project, Damian Lazarus has decided to switch focus. Whereas the outfit's debut album, Message From The Other World, combined global music influences with Lazarus's usual tech-house rhythms and a touch of psychedelia, Heart of Sky is much more heavily influenced by the Crosstown Rebels' chief's rarely discussed soul boy roots. Of course, the beats and basslines still largely stick to the powder house script, it's just that this time they come accompanied by starry-eyed soul vocals, 1960s dream pop influences, bold piano flourishes, gospel choruses and, on rare occasions, smoky trip-hop aesthetics. As a result, it's undoubtedly a much more "human" album, and one with far more crossover potential than its predecessor.

Sweating Tears EP
Sweating Tears EP (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: CRM 082RPCLEAR. Rel: 02 Mar 22
Deep House
  1. Can't Leave You (8:54)
  2. Stop Your Hate (8:59)
Review: Maceo Plex is one of the biggest deals in mainstream 'underground' techno these days. The Spanish American is best known for his Ellum Audio label, but before that was the behemoth it is today he relaxed on all manner of other labels, including Damian Lazarus's once influential Crosstown Rebels. His Sweating tears EP now gets the remix treatment on special clear 12". 'Can't Leave You' is a subversive tune with thundering, meaning and frazzled synths that eventual flips into a funky disco tinged tech house number. Flip it over for more astral-funk in the form of 'Stop Your Hate.'

Deep House
  1. Isla (7:19)

  3. Brain The Cut (6:05)
  4. Arp 8 (4:59)
Review: Barcelona-based Max Guardans has been releasing his ear-catching strain of tech house on Crosstown Rebels since 2019, and after a brief pause he's back with another striking record which shows off his infectious flair. 'Isla' is an exotic cut with fragments of vocal and dexterous percussion, quirky sound design and more all strapped to a rock solid beat. 'Mothball' lets a little swing into proceedings, while 'Brain The Cut' has a slightly more 'big-room' attitude with its brooding sense of progression. 'Arp 8' closes the EP out with a reflective mood led by synths and carried by a mellower beat, offering a natural wind down from the clubby strains that dominate this inventive fourth release from one of Spain's most interesting emergent talents.

  3. Talking Walls (Freak-A-Pella) (2:45)
Review: House legend Seth Troxler links up with new teen upstart Jaden Thompson, paving the way for an intergenerational manner of music-making that should be much more the done thing than it is. 'Talking Walls' is a moving, snappy, electronic-bassline-funking madhouse of playful fun, throwing back to house tropes trailblazed by the likes of Paul Johnson or Kerri Chandler back in the day (the echoed-out acapella B side is a must-listen). Pree the dub too; nevermind walls, this one shakes floors too!
