Review: It's hard to untangle this hopelessly sad anthem from the equally tragic death of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, but if we had to put a bet on it we'd say it would still be hailed as the masterpiece it is now without those unfortunate events. Coming, as it did, after the two albums from the band, it's the perfect half way house between their powerful, guitar-powered sound and the futuristic synthesiser waves that informed New Order not long after. Plus, it's a heartbreakingly brilliant song with lyrics that have spoken to subsequent generations without fail.

Review: The truly special thing about a track like 'Tainted Love' is its malleability over time. The original elements touch on New Romanticism, New Wave, electro, and synth pop, creating a twisted and mutated version of the crooning troubadour that smacks of sticky dancefloor heat in subterranean haunts.
With that in mind a remix collection could pretty much go anywhere, and in many ways this one does. Presenting several interpretations of this timeless and iconic tune, these range from the not-so-different instrumental and the strikingly powerful but simple acapella, through to DJ Hell's typically growly stomper, and the groovier, wavier Jack Ford and Jaimieson Hill cut. Review: Early new wave icons Duran Duran have been digging in their vaults again and this time out they've found Dreaming Of Your Cars: 1979 Demos Part 2, which features vocalist Andy Wickett, who fronted the band before Simon Le Bon took over. The rare tracks start with 'Dreaming Of Your Cars', post punk groove with a slick rhythm section and tight bassline driving it along and getting you in the groove. 'Love Story' features superbly nimble playing and crashing drums that again straighten your back and get you marching before 'X Disco' and 'To The Shore' close out in upbeat then more mournful fashion.

Review: British synth wave duo The KVB has always had a psychedelic tint to their sound, so it's no surprise to hear them embarking on a project like Artefacts for this new album on Cleopatra. The pair have dug back through heir record collections and settled on a grip of tracks to cover in their distinctive style. The selections are varied, from outright freakniks 13th Floor Elevators to Them, The Troggs and The Pretty Things, but as you might well expect none of the choices have been obvious ones. As a result, and given the strong artistic stamp of The KVB's shadowy synth sound, this is solid a KVB record as any of their original output and brilliant with it.

Wrongly credited to a gig at Santa Monica Civic when it was originally released back in 1997, the facts have since been set straight but whatever the case, this is the band at their best. Review: Bassist, artist and (post-)punk polymath Jah Wobble is perhaps best known for his work with Public Image Ltd, but his many solo records are the real cream of the crop. Now adding to the Cleopatra catalogue, Wobble returns to drop a full-on psychic battering ram (and play on the name of a ubiquitous cosmological classic by Stephen Hawking), his Brief History Of Now. It's a dystopian album full of buzzing urgency and as ever comes packed with Wobble's latter-day spoken word segments, which rail against the contradictions of modern life. Co-written, produced and performed with Jon Klein of Siouxsie & The Banshees fame, it's a thoroughly varied project, speaking of liberation, demonic entities, and karmic retribution - somtimes in dub, sometimes not - and even throwing in a curveball cover of Wire's 'I Am The Fly'.

Review: The year 1982 can definitely be regarded as a vital one for the working-class Oi-punk movement. One that saw the release of debut full-lengths from the likes of the abrasive Blitz, and the somewhat underappreciated The 4 Skins, who were endlessly plagued by a myriad of line-up shifts. By the time their second full-length, A Fistful of...4-Skins arrived, the group were already onto line-up number four (no pun intended), and this time period is where the 'Five More Years' 7" single rears its skinhead from. Topped with the anthemic opening track from the album, and tailed with the CD reissue bonus cut, 'On The Streets', this sampler/taster/snapshot/teaser/whatever else you'd like to consider it, serves as a perfect piece of oi-punk memorabilia and entry point for those who don't mind doing some of their homework in reverse. These recordings are also notable for being some of the sole studio pieces from The Last Resort vocalist, Roi Pearce, who would serve with the skins for only the one full-length, and subsequent From Chaos To 1984 live album released the following year as swansong.

Review: Originally unveiled in 1999, Danzig's sixth studio album certainly had pretty big ideas behind it. As Glenn Danzig said at the time of its release, this was the band's first LP to involve digitally recorded voices. So, what does that sound like? Well, it's a big room-filling, industrial-edged metal powerhouse of a release that can easily satisfy both fans of more mainstream guitar tones and those who really never want to compromise at all, and demand nothing but raw, unfettered, bleeding edge noises that refuse to desist. Simply put, it's a pretty timeless work that fully deserves this re-release.

Review: Cleopatra Records are no strangers to collectible 7"s from the archives of Iggy & The Stooges. In recent times we've had the likes of 'The Passenger', 'Scene Of The Crime' and even a live spot with David Bowie in 1977 thrown into the mix. Now comes something which feels so right tucked up tight on a 45 - a raucous live rendition of The Kingsmen's classic beat track 'Louie Louie', a song which would go on to be a lifelong staple in Iggy Pop's performance career. They are a rather obscure outfit, nonetheless, who make music for dance floras but with a really twisted and dark edge and plenty of distortion. The Initial Command is a reissue on limited gatefold coloured vinyl of their landmark 1988 album. It comes with all the original tunes as well as three bonus tracks to make this an absolute collector's must. The band are also out on tour right now across the US and still have what it takes to impress.
